Discover Sant Pere de Rodes monastery

In the middle of Cap de Creus National Park, the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes was built around 520m above sea level. Dominating the Gulf of Lion, from here you have a splendid view of the surrounding mountains.
The origins of this monastery are unknown, resulting in plenty of speculations and legends. It first appeared in written literature in the 9th century and was described as a small monastic cell. This Benedictine monastery gained importance in the 10th century, which also marked the beginning of its period of glory, thanks to the land and privileges given by the Popes and Frank kings. At this point it became an important place of pilgrimage.
A series of conflicts and epidemics hit the region around the 14th century and weakened the monastery, which was finally abandoned by the monks in 1835. In 1930, it was declared a Historical National Monument, which led to restoration work.
Today, it is one of the most visited monuments in Catalonia and the richness of its architecture, which dominates the landscape, paints an authentic picture.

At the heart of the county of Osona, the keystone of "Ancient Catalonia" is found in the Episcopal Museum of Vic. Arising from an ecclesiastical initiative, the goal was to bring the Catalan artworks scattered about the region, and the subject of many thefts, together in one place. The museum was opened in 1891 and in 1995 it was decided that a new building would be built for it, one which was completed in May 2002.
Today it is home to an impressive collection of Catalan Romanesque art, the second largest in the country in fact. You will discover depictions of the Virgin, wall paintings and altar coverings demonstrating the evolution of art as you move along the visit following a chronological order. If you're wondering if these works of art have been restored, the answer is no! The bright colours of each one are still the originals.
The Episcopal Museum holds one of most beautiful collections of Romanesque and Gothic art in the world. In the end, it is an exceptional and surprising summary of art which is really worth going out of your way to visit!
