Discover Santa Maria de Ripoll monastery Spain

62 miles from Barcelona, Ripoll is found in the county of the same name. The Monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll, founded in 888 by Wilfred the Hairy, stands in the middle of Abat Oliba Square. Some maintain that Ripoll was the cradle of Catalonia. What is certain is that the monastery was an important cultural centre, bringing about successive expansions. It was in the 11th and 12th centuries that the monks started to copy manuscripts here, enriching the site with a collection of several writings. In addition, the gate, dating from the 12th century, is something all visitors absolutely must see. Retracing the history of biblical and historical scenes, this Romanesque element is rather impressive.
Built during the time of the counts, the Monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll has preserved the Gothic influences from the time of its reconstruction, which followed the earthquake of 1428. From the 15th to 19th centuries, successive wars caused much destruction to this Benedictine monastery, which is still in the process of being restored. It is home to the tomb of its founder, Wilfred the Hairy, who was responsible for giving rise to Catalonia.
