Vilaflor

By Amy Adejokun Amy Adejokun Section editor

Our Editorial team's advice

Surrounded by pine forests, Vilaflor is Spain's highest located village, at an altitude of 1,600m: an ideal spot for star gazing! Located 15 mi away, Teide National Park, classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a mere half-hour drive from there. The sea is located 14 mi away, and the airport 25 mi, at around a 50 minute drive. Vilaflor is the ideal resort for hiking. The village is home to a hotel completely dedicated to nature: the Villalba, a haven of tranquillity, which looks like a chalet you would find in a ski resort. You will be able to enjoy its spa, but also its indoor climbing wall and, to top it all off, its restaurant serving Spanish and Canarian specialities.

To see

The pine forest, the stars and the Teide volcano.

To do

Vilaflor is the perfect starting point for discovering Teide National Park, a fifteen minute drive away, or to go on hikes in the surrounding pine forest. Gaze at the stars, go for a spa session at the Villalba Spa hotel.

pros

  • +  The great tranquillity.
  • +  The perfect place to gaze at the stars.

cons

  • -  The remote beaches (40 minutes by car).
  • -  The location, far from the airport and the hustle and bustle of the seaside resorts.

To think about

At 1600m of altitude, Vilaflor is the highest village in Spain. It can get a bit chilly so remember to pack a sweater!

To avoid

If you're after seaside resorts and entertainment, this is not the place for you.

To try

If you go to the villages on the mountainsides of Teide, you have to taste the goat meat, it's an absolute delight! If you get the chance, you should also try the traditional local stew, the rabbit stew ('lapin au saupiquet'), and the ?papas y mojo arrugas' (small potatoes cooked in a sauce). As for dessert, try the 'huevos mole', a mousse made using 39 eggs, and the frangollo, a rich custard made with eggs and various spices. Both are specialities of the island.

To bring back

Olivina is a semi-precious stone that comes from the Teide volcano.
