The monument in the center of the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, commemorates the Battle of Vitoria during the War of Independence.
This is a large, green city with no fewer than 40 parks and many pedestrian areas. For this reason, the quality of life here is among the best in the whole of Spain. Also, as it is the capital of the autonomous community of the Basque Country, it is home to the Basque parliament and the official residence of the 'lehendakari' (president of the community), the Palace of Ajuria Enea. It has an amazing medieval historical centre, which is shaped like an oval and consists of elegant buildings and precious churches. The whole area has been declared a historical monument. Vitoria-Gasteiz feels very relaxed, and the façades of the buildings show a good taste in design. One of the main places of interest is Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, a square that connects the historical centre with the newer areas of town.
