With its brightly coloured houses, Lugano boasts hints of Italy. In fact, the official language in this canton is Italian!
On the shores of the lake bearing the same name and surrounded by proud mountains, Lugano is a posh seaside resort that owns a casino and countless cultural attractions, especially its modern arts museum, its Museo cantonale d'Arte and the villa Favorita, owned by Baron Tyssen-Bornemisza, that holds superb modern and contemporary works. Apart from the trip to the San Lorenzo cathedral, one the chief attractions is the cable car that climbs to the peak of Mount San Salvatore from Paradiso, to uncover a breathtaking panorama. In the area close to here you can visit Switzerland in miniature at Melide, made up of a Lilliputian Helvetia, the magnificient and highly romantic village of Morcote and the Santa Maria del Sasso church.
