Discover Ali-Shan Ta´wan

Located at 2,490m of altitude, Ali-Shan ('Mount Ali') is renowned for its spectacular sunrises over the sea of clouds that surround Yushan ('Jade Mountain'). Among the many interesting things to discover here is the Sisters' Ponds, the Three Generations Trees (a new tree grows from the trunk of the first dead tree), and several temples. The forests in this area are very well-known for their yellow and red Formosa cypresses as well as for their cherry trees when in bloom. The best way to reach Mount Ali is via the 45 mile-long rail link which leaves from Chiayi, just 30m above sea level. The train travels all the way up the mountain to the Jhangnaoliao station, at 2,216m of altitude. On the way, it crosses 49 tunnels, 77 bridges and countless beautiful panoramas. Because of the steep slope, the train must follow a zigzag pattern, which makes the ride an unforgettable one. The Mount Ali train is one of the last three high plateau trains in the world. The Japanese built this railway line to transport wood that was logged outside of the forests.
