Ushuaia is located on the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, surrounded by the Martial mountains, where you can get snow practically all year round, and one of the windiest places on the planet.

The Tierra del Fuego National Park is located 12 kilometers away from Ushuaia, and it has many lakes that should be visited: the Escondido, the Fagnano and the Esmeralda lagoon, as well as the Beagle channel, the Isla de Lobos and the Bahía Pataía.

"The end of the world prison" is one of the main attractions in Ushuaia. It was occupied by 600 prisoners, who were often building public works projects and houses. The government decided to close the prison in 1947 because of its inhumane conditions and, in 1997, it was declared a National Monument - it is now well preserved and functions as a museum.

Within the Tierra del Fuego National Park, you will find the Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino, known as the "End of the World Train". It travels a distance of eight kilometers and is today a completely touristic ride, lasting 60 minutes. It is a steam train with vintage cars that was used to transport the inmates of the former Ushuaia prison to cut down trees and gather firewood.

Ushuaia's fauna is very abundant - you will be able to see foxes, guanacos (Lamas), otters and even beavers. Along the coast, you can also spot some sea lions, leopard seals, birds such as cormorants, and even penguins. To get closer to penguins, head to the sea with tourism companies that organise tours on catamarans, taking visitors to the sea lion colonies and to the Isla Martillo, where you can see penguins.
