Entirely pedestrianized with a commitment to sustainability, you needn't look further for the perfect winter getaway. Avoriaz has a long history of eco-friendly hospitality that is still evident today!

Since 1800, Avoriaz resort has been a car-free zone, and the only one of its kind in France! All attractions around the resort are skiable, walkable or accessible via a horse-drawn sled. The magical, serene atmosphere is unlike anywhere else.

Cable car, elevators and shortcuts are available to allow you to get across the resort in about 15 minutes, but the fastest way to get around is by skiing! Ski to the bakery, the supermarket, and even to dinner! The fun doesn't stop when you get off the slopes.

Also, electric snowmobiles are used by staff around the resort and a hybrid car is used for trips outside the pedestrian area.

Not only is the resort entirely pedestrianized, the buildings have also been constructed with the environment in mind. Insulated snow doors have been installed to keep the buildings warm, preventing the escape of heat and reducing their energy consumption. Rooms are equipped with independent balconies made of low-conductivity materials to prevent heat from escaping. The entire resort has also been awarded a Green Key, one of the most prestigious environmental awards for eco-friendly tourism.

The entire resort keeps its energy consumption below 44% and is powered by a wood-burning boiler that supplies energy to 470 residences and the resort water park. The power plant that provides additional energy can be controlled based on the season, and is able to differentiate between high and low seasons. This means, the energy supplied to the resort can be increased or lowered based on how busy it is, decreasing waste energy.

Not only that but all the wood that's leftover from remodeling the buildings is saved as fuel for the boiler, and waste-sorting bins are available everywhere in the resort.

While the ski slopes at Avoriaz are almost always covered with a newfallen snow during ski season, sometimes they need a little extra help. Rather than using snow cannons to ensure the slopes are always blanketed with fresh powder, Avoriaz has replaced nearly all of them with machines that consume three times less energy.

Snowcats, the vehicles that push the snow around, are also a concern for Avoriaz. All drivers must participate in a training course that certifies they will use the machines in an environmentally responsible manner.

In the heart of the forest, you'll find Stash and Lil' Stash, two forested areas dedicated to preserving the region's beautiful nature. Stash, meant for adults and children with experience, is a snowboarding wonderland with ramps, natural obstacles and jumps, all made of recycled deadwood from the forest.

Lil' Stash is a winter wonderland for children, where beginning riders can hone their skills, play and learn the basics of snowboarding.

Avoriaz is passionate about the natural paradise they're surrounded by, and they want to keep it that way. Not only are there plenty of activities for visitors, but the resort is also working to preserve the habitats of the animals and plants living in the region as well. Wildlife protection zones around the resort provide safe haven for lynx, black grouse, and ptarmigans.
