Every year, the European Best Destination website releases a list of the best European cities to visit. In order to create the best ranking possible, Internet users have one month to go and vote for their favourite place and to defend their choice. The list of the top 15 best European cities is then published, and this year number one is Colmar.

Colmar confirms it is one of the main tourist destinations in Europe, having been voted the best destination to visit in 2020 by visitors of the European Best Destination website. This year Colmar replaces Budapest, which was number one in 2019.

Located in the Northeast of France, very close to Germany, it is a charming and enchanting place to visit. Not only does its architecture make it look like a fairytale village, but the half-timbered houses and Alsatian tiled rooftops really create a magical and wonderful setting.

Colmar is particularly touristy during Christmas, as many French and foreign tourists choose that time of the year to come and discover the fantastic Christmas market and unique Christmas lights.

There are plenty of events during Christmas: meetings with Santa Claus, carols, parades, shows, cribs, animations... Everyone, from kids to adults, will find something they like.

Colmar, perfect country break any other time of the year

But Colmar is visited all year round. In spring, you will be able to take advantage of the mild climate and visit the spring markets, or to enjoy its many cultural events, such as the "Culture et Musique" festival.

In summer or in autumn, go and travel the wine route and discover the welcoming villages that surround Colmar. Alsace is a world-renowned wine-growing region with plenty of vineyards and famous wines such as gewurztraminer, riesling or pinot noir. And the best part is that you can visit or take part in wine-tasting in many of the wineries!
