It's not the first time and it won't be the last, but this Dubai-based carrier has fought off stiff competition to once again be crowned best airline in the world.

Emirates has been named World's Best Airline for 2016 at the Skytrax World Airline Awards. It beat airlines such as Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines to claim the top spot for the fourth time in the awards' history.

The prestigious flag carrier also came first for best in-flight entertainment for a staggering 12th year in a row, and was named the best airline in the Middle East.

Elsewhere in the awards, Thomson Airways won the World's Best Leisure Airline and Turkish Airlines was named the Best European Airline.

Now into their 15th year, the World's Best Airline Awards are based on the largest airline passenger satisfaction survey and considered something of a benchmark in the industry.

A total of 19.2 million passengers from over 104 countries were asked to complete surveys on 280 airlines.

Emirates regularly features high in the award listings, winning the first ever Skytrax World's Best Airline in 2001, again in 2002 and in 2013. In total, it has won 20 Skytrax World Airline Awards since they began.
