Sometimes green screens and studio sets just won't do the trick, and actual real-life decor needs to be used as a backdrop to the stories we love so much. Ever wondered where you favorite TV shows were filmed? Check out these amazing settings and see if you've been to any of them already.
Westworld: Utah, US
The science fiction TV series based on the 1973 eponymous movie revolves around an android-populated, Wild West-themed amusement park, where wealthy guests indulge in their most extravagant reveries. In addition to offering viewers a compelling, fascinating story, Westworld's visuals are just as splendid, and match the otherworldliness of the premise.
Special effects were instrumental in creating this kind of fantastic scenery that attracted so much praise to the show. But the filming location also matters greatly, and in this case, Utah was where the producers set up camp. The series was partly shot in Castle Valley, Utah, where the arid, ochre-colored, cliff-filled landscape provided the perfect backdrop to the robots' antics.
Game of Thrones: Dubrovnik, Croatia
Game of Thrones has a wide array of filming locations, many of which are well-known among fans. Scenes north of the Wall are filmed in Iceland, Dorne was brought to life in Seville, and Castle Black is actually found in Northern Ireland. But one of the most iconic places where the era-defining TV series was filmed is in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Since season two, King's Landing has been represented by the scenic Mediterranean town, which has attracted many visitors wanting to explore its bucolic streets and experience its timeless feel for themselves. Dubrovnik's medieval walls soaring on the coastline are probably what drove the producers to choose the ancient harbor, and it does embody King's Landing's royal essence very well.
Peaky Blinders: Liverpool, England
Set in the aftermath of WWI in Birmingham, England, Peaky Blinders follows the crime-ridden, chain-smoking, alcohol-fueled daily lives of the Shelby family gang. The crime family's adventures are based on the real-life exploits of an urban youth gang that ruled the city in the 1890s, and who were known to sew razor blades into their caps.
Even though the story takes place in Birmingham, most outdoor scenes were filmed in Liverpool, whose industrial-era buildings better suited the gritty atmosphere of the series. Other cities in the north are also recurrent filming locations for the show, including Manchester, Leeds, and Bolton.
Sherlock: London, England
The iconic TV series follows the adventures of outstandingly smart but insufferably obnoxious Sherlock Holmes and his courageous, quick-witted sidekick, Dr. Watson. The detective duo has been to several places all over England to dive deep into mysteries and uncover the truth, but they still spend most of their time in the country's gorgeous capital.
Many of the show's scenes are filmed in London, and those who wander in the city's streets can even stumble upon some emblematic sights of the series. And to see the detectives' 221B Baker St apartment, you'll actually have to head to 187 North Gower Street, which was a much more practical filming location than traffic-choked, tourist magnet Baker Street.
Narcos: Medellin, Colombia
The drama series focused on Pablo Escobar's life of crime is set in Colombia, where it is also filmed. The famous drug kingpin created his illegal business in Medellin, the city that was once considered to be Colombia's crime capital and that suffered greatly from Escobar's reign as the region's most powerful and cruel drug lord.
Medellin is no longer the city depicted in Narcos, considering that the series is set between the 1970s and the 1990s, after which the Colombian city has known a laudable cultural and economic revival. But all the exquisite shots of Medellin, from the colorful streets to the gorgeous surrounding greenery, do justice to the city's inimitable beauty no matter the decade.
