The magic of sunrise and sunset goes somewhere beyond description. Any words we may use cannot quite do justice to a beast so changeable, so evocative, so mesmerising. These twelve spectacular sunrises go somewhere towards illustrating the sheer variety and beauty of dawn. While our culture, our language, our hometown may differ, we can all bask in the glorious serenity of daybreak.

When considering the world's most beautiful sunrises, it would surely be remiss not to mention a beach named after them. Early morning on Sunrise Beach is like a still from the most glamorous Hollywood film. This time of day is just as it ought to be: magical, beautiful, charming and enchanting.

  • Sardinia

This panorama is taken from the serene beaches of Sardinia. The colours chime with the most exquisite impressionist watercolour, and the effect is hypnotic.

  • Mount Fuji, Tokyo

Mount Fuji at any time of day is a sight for the sorest of eyes. Jutting out from a plateau, this Japanese volcano dusted in a powdered snow icing is breathtaking when the first sun of the morning emerges onto its gleaming peak.

  • Monaco

Opulence, Formula One, tax loopholes and dubious royalty: all this is taken as read for Monaco. As much as anything, though, what marks this minute principality is its beauty. The colours that shine through at sunrise make this the perfect place to start your day.

  • Turkey

This sunrise on the Turkish coast is a Turkish delight. A spectrum of hypnotic colours seem to emanate from the centre of the sun as it yawns out its first light of the day. As twinkles begin to hit the water for the first time, the magic of the day arrives.

Sunrises have a precious symbolism. From the Egyptians, who believed sunrise hailed the rebirth of Ra to old proverbs claiming that a red sky at morning means a warning of bad weather. The sun and its emergence has forever shone at the centre of myths, legends, and religions: the dawn of a new day, a new beginning, and a new opportunity to follow a dream and reach for the sky. It's the last thing you see before going to bed after a night of decadence, and the first thing you see when you wake up before a day of diligence.
