US champion Bode Miller was at a neighbor's house with his wife with their youngest child, Emeline who died after falling into a swimming pool.

His wife Morgan Beck, who is five months pregnant jumped in and tried to resuscitate her while 911 was called.

Emeline was rushed to hospital however paramedics couldn't save her and she was pronounced dead the next day.

The heartbroken gold medalist said he and his family were "beyond devastated" in a statement posted on Instagram.

Mr Miller is the most successful skier in US history, earning six Olympic medals including gold at the 2010 Games, 33 World Cup wins, and four world championship titles.

Emeline, who was named after Miller's grandmother, was the youngest of his four children.

On Instagram he announced the death by posting a picture of her and writing, "we are beyond devastated. Our baby girl, Emmy, passed away yesterday. Never in a million years did we think we would experience a pain like this."

He added, "her love, her light, her spirit will never be forgotten. Our little girl loved life and lived it to its fullest everyday. Our family respectfully requests privacy during this painful time."
