Historical dates

1492: controversial discovery by Christopher Colombus.
1678: the Bermudans settle on the islands to extract salt.
1710: brief spell by the Spanish. The islands become a hideout for pirates.
1778 to 1783: French occupation.
1783: loyalist colonialists of the American Revolution set up cotton plantations.
1799: the islands are attached to the Bahamas.
1832: abolition of slavery.
1872: islands annexed by Jamaica.
1962: the astronaut, John Glenn, returns to Earth close to Grand Turk. Islands attached to the Bahamas.
1973: last saltworks abandoned at Salt Cay.
1973: islands become a colony of the British Crown.
1984: Club Med opens at Provo and the tourism boom kicks off.
