Though Blackpool's status as a leading resort has largely withered in past decades due to the advent of cheap travel and changing tastes, its tower is still standing strong. The red steel monument, which opened in 1894, was heavily inspired by Paris's Eiffel Tower. However, at 518ft 9inches, Blackpool tower is half the size and, unlike its French counterpart, is not free-standing. It has nevertheless attracted its fair share of publicity over the past few years, with the Tower Ballroom providing the set for BBC's Strictly Come Dancing. The tower complex also features a cinema, a children's adventure playground and a dungeon attraction.
