Cerne Abbas Giant, Dorchester United Kingdom

Discover Cerne Abbas Giant, Dorchester

The club-wielding nude figure etched into the chalk Dorset hills has long been the subject of much speculation and scientific study, with suggested origins ranging from the Saxon, Celtic or Herculean tradition. Yet, even without definitive conclusion as to its origins, the Giant of Cerne Abbas, which lies 30 miles west of Bournemouth and 16 miles north of Weymouth, is archetypal of English folklore. Once coined rather brilliantly as 'Britain's most famous phallus,' it's recommended that visitors take advantage of the 'Giant's View' lay-by just off the A532 for the best photo opportunities.

In the same guise, the hill figure of the White Horse can be found in Uffington, Oxfordshire.
