All types of shops for every type of budget can be found in the northeastern United States. Franklin Mills Mall in Philadelphia has more than 200 stores that include the biggest American brands with most of the items on sale. In Newport, Rhode Island, Bannister's Wharf is a tourist's delight, thanks to its boutiques and the many souvenir and t-shirt shops located on the port.

North American cuisine has many facets. Crab fishing is a major activity in Chesapeake Bay, east of Washington D.C. In fact, crab cakes are a speciality of the region. Moving on to Boston, you can try the famous New England Clam Chowder. You will, of course, be able to find all of the traditional foods that are associated with the US (all those fatty and sugary options), but it is also possible to eat well, with plenty of vegetarian and healthy options.

Northeastern USA: travel tips

Since the terrorist attacks, security measures have been strengthened in the Washington D.C area, so get ready to be patient during baggage checks, which could last several hours.

Make sure that your electronic passport is fully up to date. You will also have to fill out an ESTA form (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) online before leaving for the United States, regardless of where you are flying to or through.

Finally, it is strongly recommended that you have very good travel health insurance, as health care in the United States is extremely expensive.
