Though Switzerland is a small country, its climate varies per region. The great central plateau, between the Jura and the Alps, has a quite temperate climate, with rather mild winters and summers. The average temperature in Zurich thus varies between 0°C in January-February and 17°C in July-August. Whereas between the Alps and the Jura Arc temperatures quickly grow cold at altitude, while in the south the climate in the Ticino is somewhat mediterranean.
In winter, Switzerland is the land of ski. It snows almost six out of twelve months of the year in the Alps and the Jura mountains. Most of the slopes receive a lot of sunshine, notably southeastwards in the Valais Alps.
In spring, the banks of Lake Maggiore (Locarno) and Lake Lugano are singularly pleasurable (an average of 14 and 17 °C). This is the right time to visit Switzerland, and it is still possible to ski in the mountains' resorts.
Switzerland is very hot in summer (on average 20 °C in Lugano, 18 °C in Geneva), and tourists go hiking in the early hours to enjoy its freshness. Comparatively, afternoons are sometimes stormy. The winter season draws crowds around Lake Ticino, while the mountains welcome the more sporty for mountaineering and ice skiing.
In spring until mid-October, temperatures are very mild in the lowlands (averaging 11 °C in Zurich and Geneva, 15 °C in Lugano). It is lovely staying by the lakes or taking a tour of the Jura vineyards during this season.
