The great capital city of Athens should clearly be the first stop on your tour of Greece's great monuments. The Parthenon sits enthroned at the top of the Acropolis, a hill symbolising the Hellenic civilisation and uniting several monuments among which are the temples of Athena, Nike, and Erechtheum, and the Propylaeas, the sanctuary columns. When heading back towards the Agora, stop in at the Acropolis museum to see the fabulous Caryatids (pillars in the form of women), then continue on to the old town's fortifications, with the Dionysus and Herodes Atticus theatres, Hadrian's Arch and the Temple of the Olympian Zeus. Apart from the sites of historical importance, Athens is a modern city. Your itinerary should include the alleys and stairways of Plaka, an old neighbourhood with many pleasant taverns, the lively Omonia Square, the flea markets of Avyssinias Square, the restaurants and second hand dealers of the Psiri neighbourhoods, and Mount Lycabette for the amazing view of the city, not the mention the museums.
