This family-run hotel located in the centre of Nice resembles an urban hotel. Housed in a deceptive Renaissance-style beautiful old building, it is best suited for couples.

    Location

A stone's throw from Old Nice, the hotel stands in a street off the main boulevard linking the seafront to the railway station, very close to the commercial area of town. Allow approximately 20 minutes to get to the central station and a little over half an hour to get to the airport. The hotel is surrounded by bus and tram stops and there is a regular flow of cabs to take you anywhere you like.

    To know

The Grand Aston is a city hotel, so get ready to do some shopping, as many of Nice's boutiques are gathered in one of the streets perpendicular to the hotel.

    advantage

    • The size of the Deluxe rooms
    • The new decor of the rooms

    disadvantages

    • The noise from the street
    • The outdated main hall
    Overview 5.50/10

The Aston is housed in a beautiful building whose façade recalls ancient times, but that was actually built in the early 20th century. Unfortunately, the entrance hall goes too far into the trend of bygone times, with too much brass and mirrors. The small lounge area, located just after the reception, isn't any more attractive, with its worn dark leather sofas.
Staying in touch with the times, however, the establishment is being progressively renovated, starting with a small pool and solarium being built on the rooftop, not yet completed when we visited in April 2009.
Next to this, you will find an American bar ornate with photographs of jazzmen and a beautiful view of the red roofs of Nice, beyond Massena Square.

    Accommodation 6.00/10

This hotel has a total of 147 guestrooms, two of which are suites located on the sixth and top floor. Renovations have been envisioned for every room, but when we visited, only the rooms on the fifth and sixth floors had already been completed. The rest is supposed to have been entirely finished by the end of 2010.

The rooms are divided into three categories: Classic Superior, Deluxe and Suites. The Deluxe rooms are the ones that have been renovated on the fifth and sixth floors (they are exactly the same size as the Classic rooms).

The Suites and Deluxe rooms, decorated in a modern style that blends shades of blue or red with the dark wood of the furniture and shutters, were to die for. The classic rooms, however, were a lot less stylish.

Still in the Deluxe category, some details are most welcoming, such as the flat screen televisions and the soft duvets on the wide beds. The excellent location of the rooms at the front enables guests to see the gardens of Massena Square from their room. They welcome sunshine all day long and have a pretty and unobstructed view of the roofs of Old Nice and the castle. The location isn't exactly flawless though, as the street can be quite noisy. Fortunately, the guestrooms are fitted with double-glazed windows and individual air conditioning.

The classic rooms weren't quite as modern: the carpet, heavy drapes and beige colours were dull. Their size is nevertheless acceptable, as their surface varies from 20 to 30m². Although renovations have been planned for all of the rooms with the same criteria that were used in the contemporary style of the Deluxe rooms, these are the only ones so far to have been finished.

    Food and drink 5.50/10

The hotel's only restaurant, the Horloge, is on the ground floor. It has a terrace on the square (also used as a bar) that has the air of a smoking lounge. It is furnished with thick wood tables and some flower ornaments. The cuisine focuses on Provençal flavours, while retaining a touch of traditional French cuisine: a lot of fish is served, often grilled, and of course some French specialities like foie gras. Breakfast is international, with a choice of savoury and sweet dishes: nothing out of the ordinary.
Found on the top floor, the Phileas Fogg is an American bar furnished with small leather chairs. The Lounge bar is open every night from 5:00pm to 12:00am.

    Beach

The hotel does not have a private beach.
