Start your American tour with the Statue of Liberty on Place Picard. This replica of the iconic New York statue is a tribute to Franco-American friendship. Made of resin, since 2000 it has replaced the original, which was created by French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi (also the creator of New York's Lady Liberty), and which was melted down by the Germans during the Occupation to recover its iron.
If you're keen to get away from it all, get ready for a unique road trip to Bordeaux! This city is full of hidden treasures that will transport you straight to the United States, from New York charm to Californian ambience –a change of scenery guaranteed!
A stopover in New York
The Pont d'Aquitaine, a Golden Gate-style bridge
Head for the west coast of the United States with the Pont d'Aquitaine, reminiscent of San Francisco's famous Golden Gate Bridge. Built in 1967, this 53-metre-high behemoth towers over the Garonne. You can admire it from the slopes on the right bank or from the Parc de l'Hermitage in Lormont, which offers an uninterrupted view of the suspension bridge.
Good to know: for the price of a tram ticket, there is a river shuttle service that takes you across the Garonne from Bordeaux to Lormont, allowing you to discover the famous bridge from another angle.
Gliding along Venice Beach in Bordeaux
If you're a fan of skating and thrills, make a diversion to the Chartrons skatepark. With a relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of Venice Beach in California, this is the perfect place for skateboarders and street culture fans. You'll be able to admire some impressive acrobatics and maybe even try your hand at skateboarding.
Good to know: as well as being part of the UNESCO World Heritage site, the skatepark has been designated by the Olympic Games as a training centre, so it will be welcoming international athletes from 2024 onwards.
