Eating in a tasca, a typical Lisbon tavern

The tasca is to Lisbon what the brasserie is to Paris. With their authentic "à la bonne franquette" atmosphere and simple decor, but with a warm and friendly welcome that will transport you, these small, typical restaurants are to be found in the heart of the Portuguese capital's districts. Scattered throughout the city, you'll find the one that suits you best. Some are very lively, others are hidden away at the end of an alleyway and have no more than a dozen tables - they represent another facet of Portuguese culture, and not the least. If you thought that Lisbon's food had nothing exceptional to offer, you've come to the right place to realise that this is not the case. Let us transport you into the close world of the locals and share a good meal to the romantic and melancholy sound of fado music. An authentic activity to (re)do!

Barracão de Alfama: in the heart of the old Alfama district

This little restaurant tucked away in a small alleyway in the popular Alfama district is a real discovery. The dishes are served generously at more than reasonable prices. If the front isn't the most convincing, the food is really tasty. The staff are very welcoming. Depending on the season, there may be a bit of a wait outside, but it's well worth the diversions! We recommend the grilled sardines or the salmon, cooked to perfection.

Tasca Estrela d'Ouro: Graça's quiet neighbourhood

This pretty, narrow tavern, where the waiters wander dizzily between the tables, serves delicious local specialities. The restaurant's size is more than made up for by the quality of the food and service on offer. It's a great place to meet people over a plate of codfish accras. Don't forget to book your table!

Zé da mouraria: the popular Mouraria district

Situated not far from the Place Martim Moniz, this restaurant, whose walls are covered in pretty earthenware tiles, sets the tone. Here you can eat just like at home! Service is in large dishes to share, and there's no skimping on quality or even quantity. A word of warning to big eaters: the cuisine is very generous, so most customers don't manage to finish their plate. You've been warned!

📍 Address: Rua João do Outeiro 24, 1100-341, Lisbon, Portugal

Opening times:

  • Monday to Saturday: 12pm-4pm
  • closed on Sunday

A Provinciana: right in the centre of Baixa

Located close to the Plaza de Restauradores, this tavern is certainly the most typical. From the counter at the entrance to the recognisable tiles and the characteristic decoration on the wall, it couldn't be more authentic. The food is simple and unpretentious, and the dishes are served copiously. A sure bet in this very touristy area, where it can be hard to find a suitable address. Unlike previous tascas, the house has a very pleasant outdoor terrace if you don't want to eat inside.

📍 Address: Tv. do Forno 23, 1150-193 Lisboa, Portugal

⏰ Opening times:

  • Monday to Saturday, 8am to 11pm
  • closed on Sunday

Tasca da Esquina: the chic Estrela district

A veritable institution, this restaurant opened its doors in 2009 in Lisbon's upmarket district. Here, the chefs revisit classic and traditional Portuguese recipes with a creative twist. We recommend that you let yourself be guided by the chef, who suggests a menu to be tasted blind. The restaurant room opens directly onto the open kitchen, so it's possible to watch the cooks hard at work behind the stoves, which adds a little more excitement to the place and represents a guarantee of quality.

📍 Address: R. Domingos Sequeira 41C, 1350-119 Lisboa, Portugal

⏰ Opening times:

  • Monday to Saturday: 12.30pm-3.30pm / 7.30pm-11pm
