A weekend in London for less than €400? it's possible! (including travel, accommodation and activities! )

London is an expensive city where only the rain is free. Just getting on the Tube can put your wallet on the floor. Fortunately, there are a few tricks you can use to spend a weekend exploring the Great Fog that is the English capital, and at a lower cost. That's the challenge we've taken up by offering a two-day getaway for less than 400 euros per person, including travel, activities and accommodation!

Travelling, routes to avoid

Trains to London are the most practical way of getting to London, but they are also the most popular and the most expensive. With an average cost of between €200 and €400 for a return journey, this is obviously not an option for our tight budget. There's still the option of crossing the sea by ferry - after all, why not, it's longer but also more daring. Unfortunately, it's not that easy to enjoy the sea spray early in the morning at a smart price. Fares are very random indeed, ranging easily from €29 to over €200, to which you have to add the train journey to the port and on to London. So we can't recommend these routes. The best compromise is tofly. Fares from Charles de Gaulle are generally stable, even for weekends in summer. Expect to pay between €90 and €180 for a return ticket, or even less if you're flying from elsewhere in France. Another advantage: take control of the time by arriving 10 minutes after your departure time, thanks to the time difference during summer time.

Local activities and transport

There's no shortage of tourist attractions in the city, including cruises, visits to monuments on foot or by bus, and even visits to the Harry Potter film studios. To make the most of them, it's advisable to manage your time well, but also your budget, as many entrance tickets to iconic sites are priced at €30, which, between you and me, is excessive. So to ensure that your wallet isn't the only one feeling the heat, it's a good idea to find out about all the possible discounts. The London Pass is an excellent way of cutting costs and reducing the hassle of managing tickets, coupons and promotional codes. For £109 (around €122), the pass gives unlimited access to over 80 activities for 2 days. These include crossings of the River Thames, visits to the most iconic sites (Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Windsor Castle, etc.) and a number of film studios. The pass can be booked on the website, where you can also buy your pre-loaded Oyster Card in advance, a must for accessing public transport at a reasonable price. It will cost you £5 for the physical card and a further £15 to travel as you please (a total of €23).

And now to sleep?

When it comes to sleeping arrangements, it all depends on your sleeping requirements. For the less demanding, there are a number of very affordable hostels in good locations, with shared rooms for up to 10 people, ideal for epic pillow fights and the like, but less so for a peaceful night's sleep. For this type of accommodation, you can expect to pay around €50 a night. Now, for a quiet weekend on your own or with your lover or even your family, other establishments, although more expensive, are still affordable. The ideal hotels are relatively far from the centre but close to an underground station. If you use your Oyster card, the centre is at your feet in just a few dozen minutes. In areas such as Chelsea, Camberwell and the City of Westminster, accommodation can be had for between 90 and 120 a night.
