A trip to Maine in the northeast of the U.S. means outdoor beauty, local culture, and memories with friends and family. Some of the best times to visit the state of Maine are between June and August, yet it is just as beautiful in Autumn. We have listed a few locations in the state where you are sure to pass an unforgettable vacation on the coast or in the mountains.

Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor is known for its beautiful coast, lobster boats and misty views over the islands. Activities to try with friends or family include renting kayaks or boats for the day. If you are looking to relax on the beach away from crowds, try Sand Beach which is a calm and quiet cove beach. One of the best places in Bar Harbor to get lobster rolls and chowders is the Thirsty Whale. Just southwest of Bar Harbor you will find Acadia National Park which is renowned for its biodiversity and landscapes. Taking at least one hike here is not to be missed.

Ogunquit

There are a variety of activities to do in Ogunquit that are sure to make your trip memorable. Large, good beaches to relax or play on are Ogunquit Beach and Moody Beach. If you stay in the area, be sure to cisti Ogunquit Heritage Museum which is a Native American Heritage museum. People of all ages love heading to Wonder Mountain Fun Park to test out their intricate mini-golf courses and complete the maze there.

Portland

A trendy city located on a peninsula that extends into Casco Bay, it is the perfect blend of history, beaches, and good eats. Besides visiting the many lighthouses, there is also the Portland Museum of Art which is the largest and oldest public art institution in the state. One of the best things about being in Maine is the accessibility to fresh and well-made Lobster Rolls. Another restaurant with great seafood and views is Luke's Lobster Portland Pier. The Lobster Shack is a great place to enjoy fresh lobster with an amazing view. Another great place where you will find lobster rolls at a bargain ($11.99) is Susan’s Fish n Chips.

Kennebunkport

Kennebunkport is a coastal town in Maine that has a nice beach and charming village. Those looking to surf or just sunbathe can head to Gooch’s Beach. There is also an excellent golf course in town called Cape Arundel Golf Club. A trip to the town is not complete without a tour of the 19th century First Families Museum. After your tour, head into town for lobster rolls. A great restaurant for lobster is the Earth at Hidden Pond (354 Goose Rocks Road, Kennebunkport).

Phippsburg

A great destination in Maine for a summer getaway is Phippsburg. As it might prove tricky to find a hotel in town, consider renting a cottage for the week with friends or family. There is also the Sebasco Harbor Resort which offers all kinds of cottages and has an excellent restaurant on site. Otherwise, there is plenty of lodging in Bath, the town over. Popham Beach State Park is located in Phippsburg and is a wonderful beach in the area to hang out on. Those who are more into history can visit the two forts in the area: Fort Baldwin and Fort Popham. They are both listed as historic sites in the state.
