8 reasons why you might just fall in love with Liverpool

The fifth largest city in the UK, Liverpool is located in the North-west of England, and is particularly famous for being home of the Beatles. But there is more to this vibrant city which offers a fantastic art and music scene, great football clubs, buzzing nightlife and friendly people. Liverpool really is a unique city, full of history, soul, and even a certain edge. So get on board and get ready to fall in love with Liverpool!

1. The iconic music scene

Other than having many attractions paying tribute to the Beatles, such as Beatles tours, the Beatles Museum, and the Cavern Club (where the Beatles often performed), Liverpool has a much bigger and more diversemusic scene, with great places and talents everywhere. The city has actually recorded more number 1 hits than anywhere else in the UK, and is the hometown of famous musicians such as Gerry and the Pacemakers, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Billy Fury, Cast, The La’s, Echo & The Bunnymen, and Cilla Black. It is also home to many fantastic venues, like the Philharmonic Hall, Heebie Jeebies, The Jacaranda and the Arts Club. Even better, it hosts the Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF) every year!

2. The sporting culture

Liverpool is unquestionably an ideal place for sports lovers, football fans in particular. The city is home to not one, but two of the most famous and oldest football teams ever - Everton and Liverpool. But attending a footie match isn’t your only option, you could also head to the Aintree racecourse for the Grand National steeplechase or go golfing, since the city since the city region offers plenty of options for golf, from the Royal Birkdale in Southport (which was voted number one golf course in Britain) to the Royal Liverpool at Hoylake (which offers one of the best collections of golf memorabilia).

3. The fantastic arts and culture

In terms of galleries, Liverpool offers numerous wonderful places to visit, such as the Walker Art Gallery, the Tate Gallery, the Open Eye Gallery and The Bluecoat. But there is also a booming street art scene in the city (led by one of the most famous street artists Tristan Brady-Jacobs). Besides, there are plenty of museums to visit and learn about the history of the city. Head to the Merseyside Maritime Museum, the Museum of Liverpool or the International Slavery Museum in order to learn more about it.

4. The friendly locals

Not only are their accents charming, but Scousers really are also some of the most friendly and funny people in the UK. Get acquainted with the slang and bask in the welcoming atmosphere of the city, and you’ll end up having a lot of fun. A lot of British comedians are Scouse including John Bishop, Faith Brown, Keith Carter and Neil Fitzmaurice, which should give you an idea of just how funny Liverpoolians are. Check out some local comedy clubs such as Laughter House Comedy or Hot Water Comedy Club for some laughs while you're in town.

5. The food!

Liverpool is actually a great city to visit if you call yourself a foodie, whether you love traditional recipes or international cuisine. The word “Scouse” is actually short for lobscouse, which is a traditional stew made of either lamb or mutton, potatoes, carrot, onion and gravy. Liverpool is also a very multicultural place so you’ll be able to get dishes from Russia, Africa, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Vietnam or even Mexico, just to name a few. And whether you’re into fine dining or street food, don’t worry because the city has it all! Camp & Furnace could be a pretty unique experience, as it is at the same time a restaurant, bar, nightclub, events and studio space. We also love Rudy's and Maray for some delightful meals!

6. The ecclectic nightlife

Liverpool is a fantastic place for nightlife, and not only because of its music scene. The Ropewalks district and Seel Street are two very popular spots to go partying, with bars like Heebie Jeebies, Be At One, Arts Club and Alma De Cuba. But there are also more chilled atmospheres for those who don't feel like going clubbing. Try the Kazimier Garden, a wonderful beer garden with regular live music sessions. And if you’re a beer lover, you’ll also be able to try some delicious ales in the Baltic Triangle’s microbreweries, such as the Black Lodge Brewery and H1780.

7. The beautiful beaches nearby

Because of its coastal location, Liverpool offers plenty of opportunities for a beach trip. Very close to the city, you will find Formby Beach - a gorgeous beach with sand dunes and pine woods, making it the perfect place for nature walks. If you’re ready to go a little further to go swimming, head to the Wirral beaches (West Kirby, Meols, Moreton or Wallasey). And if you’re looking for something different, Crosby Beach might be just what you need, since it is home to Antony Gormley’s ‘Another Place’, an impressive art installation.

8. The dazzling architecture

In terms of architecture, Liverpool is an impressive destination, and we promise you won’t be disappointed. Having more Grade II listed buildings than any other city in the UK after London, there's a lot to look at. Get ready to be bewitched by buildings such as St. George's Hall, the Liverpool Central Library, as well as the Walker Art Gallery and the World Museum. Possibly the most emblematic of the city, the Royal Liver Building is a Grade I-listed building, and one of the reasons why Liverpool gained its UNESCO World Heritage status. And if you’re into Georgian architecture, head to Rodney Street, Mount Pleasant, and the cathedrals towards Toxteth. So wherever you go, you’ll be sure to find amazing places and lovely people in Liverpool - and for sure you’ll fall in love with the city!
