6 reasons why Copenhagen should be your next citytrip

Rapidly becoming a must-visit destination, Copenhagen offers plenty of activities for all kinds of visitors. Between nordic culture, design and cuisine, here are six reasons to convince you that you should visit the Danish capital, if ever you were still on the fence about going.

1. The aquatic setting

Sometimes nicknamed "Venice of the North", Copenhagen is a city where water is everywhere and canal tours are a great way to explore the city, as they go past most of the famous places, such as the Opera House, the Black Diamond Library and the Little Mermaid statue. Check out the Copenhagen Card to find out more about accessing these.

2. The incredible food scene

Michelin-starred restaurant Noma, which has been voted best restaurant in the world on many occasions, is one of the many good reasons to visit Copenhagen. Being particularly interested in seasonal food, they offer three different menus depending on the season - one seafood season, one vegetable season and one game and forest season. But make sure your wallet is ready for the experience, as it is pretty pricey - menus go for 2650 Danish krones (approximately £309) and 1350 DKK for wine pairing (approximately £157). So if you’re looking for more low-key culinary experiences, don’t worry, Copenhagen has got plenty more to offer! From delicious Danish pastries to the exciting Torvehallerne indoor food market, and Smørrebrød, a mouth-watering open-faced sandwich offering hundreds of possible combinations and toppings, you’re bound to find something to your taste in the Danish city!

3. The cycling culture

If there ever was a city to visit for people who love cycling, it should be Copenhagen. The city has entire parts of its roads dedicated to cycling. It also offers bicycle city tours, taking you around the city’s main attractions such as the Little Mermaid, the Amalienborg Palace and the Round Tower, which is the oldest functioning observatory in Europe.

4. A designer's pradise

We will have to give it to Danish people, they create some pretty impressive designs, and furniture shops and design shops in Denmark are some of the best in the world. You can even head to the Designmuseum, which offers a lot of variety in its collections, from furniture to ceramics, fashion, textiles and digital design. And let’s face it, Danish people have got plenty more to be proud of! Creators of the LEGO, home country of iconic designers Poul Henningsen and Arne Jacobsen, and home to the fabulous art museum Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek containing over 10,000 works of art and archaeological objects, Denmark is a must-visit destination for design and art lovers!

5. The delightful Meatpacking District

Even though Meatpacking District in Manhattan probably is the most famous out of the two, the Danish version shouldn’t be undervalued. Originally home to the city’s meat business, it has now turned into a new and creative hub, with plenty of cool bars, galleries and restaurants buzzing with fashionable people that look like they just stepped out of a photo shoot. Some of the places you should not miss include Kødbyens Fiskebar (great for seafood and wine), NOHO (for exquisite cocktails), KB3 Champagnebaren (which is a fantastic champagne bar), WarPigs (which is a hip brewpub), and Prolog Coffee Bar, probably one of the best roastery and café in the city.

6. The friendly locals

If some countries might be difficult to visit because of the language barrier, that isn't the case of Denmark. Danish people speak excellent English. Plus, they are very some of the most friendly and positive people in the world - many studies have put them on top of the list as the happiest population in the world! They are even creators of the Hygge concept, which refers to a moment, at home or not, for cosiness, conviviality and contentment. So get ready to grab a good blanket, candles and dear friends!
