Discover the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park

The Sierra de Guadarrama, which forms a natural border with the northern part of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, is a group of mountains made up of different ecosystems, rich in a variety of flora and fauna. It offers numerous areas of natural and scenic interest. Among the sites worth visiting are the many peaks, the highest of which is the Peñalara at 2,430 metres, and the Parque de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares (or "High Manzanares Park"), home to the Pedriza, the largest granite complex in Europe.

The Lozoya valley is another area of great scenic interest. It owes its name to the river that rises in the Sierra de Guadarrama, creating a number of aquifer formations such as lakes and ponds. The Sierra de Guadarrama boasts a wide range of trails which, combined with its cultural wealth, make it one of the most visited places in the Madrid region. Today, we invite you to discover the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, on the Madrid side of the mountains.

Sierra de Guadarrama National Park: wild nature in the centre of Spain

Occupying an area of almost 34,000 hectares of the Sierra de Guadarrama, the national park offers a varied backdrop, with mountains reaching altitudes of over 2,000 metres, vast holm oak forests, steppes, oak groves, pine forests and a wealth of wildlife. If you're lucky, you may catch a glimpse of some of the peninsula's bird species, such as the black vulture, the imperial eagle and the black stork.

The treasures of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park

At the heart of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park lies a natural landmark: La Pedriza del Manzanares. This geological formation of granite, shaped by thousands of years of erosion, is unique on the Iberian Peninsula. An exceptional site that is well worth seeing.

Another place of interest to explore in the centre of the national park is undoubtedly the Peñalara massif. Particularly popular with mountaineers and hikers, these remarkable glacial formations create an admirable backdrop of moraines (piles of rocky debris swept along by a glacier), glacial cirque walls, superb basins and extraordinary lagoons.
