Concerts, beer and lights: cruises on the Danube

There are a plethora of offers to discover everywhere during your stay. The price of basic excursions starts at £12 for a minimum duration of 60 minutes. This can be used as a basis for comparing offers. Most cruises offer free drinks. As you walk along the river, you'll see plenty of vendors offering "last minute" deals, and although some are really worth it, it's not uncommon to see companies abusing this technique. Most of the time it's still worth it, as the companies prefer to leave with a full boat, even if it means selling off the tickets.

Night cruises highlight the city's monuments, so that you can see only them. The Buda parliament and castle are lit up as soon as night falls, and the Danube is surely the best place to take advantage of this. What's more, it's hard to resist the all-you-can-eat prosecco offered by the company. It's not the most local of spirits, but you can't refuse it in such a festive city.

Another night cruise, this time with a dinner show. The show features Hungarian folk dancing and local music. You can hear the cymbalum in action, a musical instrument brought by the Ottomans and rearranged by the Hungarians in the 19th century. Dinner is an all-you-can-eat buffet of traditional Hungarian dishes. All in all, although this package is the most expensive of our selection (£62 per person), it allows you to combine several discoveries of Hungarian heritage while admiring the superb view of the city's illuminated monuments.

As you'll have gathered, many of Budapest's best activities take place at night. Enjoy a night cruise coupled with a party on a party boat with revellers from all over the world. An on-board DJ will be mixing throughout the trip. A free drink is included in the offer, but the 'open bar' option is still tempting for unlimited drinks at the bar. And best of all, after the cruise, a bus will take everyone to the after-party in a nightclub in the city centre, where entry is guaranteed and you won't have to queue.
