Sunbathing on Argent beach near Ajaccio

After visiting the city from top to bottom, you could do with a sunny break. Around thirty kilometres from Ajaccio town centre, this beach with its white sand and turquoise waters is reminiscent of the exotic beaches of the Caribbean, where you can relax under a parasol and enjoy the ideal temperatures of the Mediterranean Sea. The area around Plage d'Argent offers some wonderful walking trails, including a visit to a former penitentiary. For those with a sweet tooth, the restaurant that bears the beach's name serves up delicious dishes, depending on when the fishing boats arrive. The setting is truly idyllic.

A wild and majestic beach

Just forty minutes away by car, Argent beach, to the south of Ajaccio, is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island of beauty. Also known as the " Mare e Sole " beach (sea and sun in Corsican), it is located in the commune of Pietrosella, on the southern shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio. The sand is immaculate white, the water transparent and turquoise, and the surrounding countryside is lush with greenery and mountains.

For sports enthusiasts, one of the paths leads to the former Coti-Chiavari penitentiary and its dam. From the beach, it takes around 45 minutes to climb up to the penitentiary, then a few minutes more to reach the dam. The dry-stone building was constructed in 1855. In addition to the main building, the prisoners built a small dam holding 24,000 cubic metres of water not far from the prison. Now unoccupied, it is perched on a plateau overlooking the gulf of Plage d'Argent. In the distance, you can see the mountains of central Corsica. The view is marvellous.
