Biarritz: the surfing capital

Biarritz in short

🏖️ The undisputed home of surfers, this chic resort on the Basque coast is also nicknamed "the queen of beaches", a name it lives up to! With a population that increases 10-fold in the summer, the town has been booming ever since Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie made it their fiefdom. Far from the popular resorts of the coast, Biarritz attracts a wealthy clientele. The beautiful mansions and luxury boutiques lining the beach bear witness to the prestige of this resort. Young people are not left out either, with hundreds of surfers battling it out on the waves in summer and winter alike. And when night falls, the bars and nightclubs, located on the beach, on the rock face or in the narrow streets of the town centre, vibrate until the wee hours of the morning.

🎰 Trendy Biarritz is also renowned for its casino and thalassotherapy. A veritable institution, the mud, seaweed and seawater steam baths are attracting more and more enthusiasts. The most famous centre is undoubtedly the Sofitel, which faces the sea in a top-of-the-range setting.

🍴 A town with a strong character, its culinary specialities, its language called Euskara, its traditions and its architecture so typical of the Basque Country give this seaside resort a strong identity that leaves no one indifferent.

⭐ The nomination of the Grand Palais as a Palace, making it the only hotel on the Atlantic coast to fall into this category, has once again put Biarritz in the spotlight.

🌊 And because the town never stands still, just like the waves that have made its reputation, it has just celebrated the opening of two cultural sites totally dedicated to the ocean: the Musée de la Mer Aquarium, devoted to live entertainment, and the Cité de l'Océan et du Surf, dedicated to knowledge of the ocean.

A mysterious Basque country: Biarritz is an ideal destination for visiting the Basque coast and the inland Basque country, with its villages of distinctive architecture. It's a plunge into a culture that goes back two thousand years and is renowned for its sense of welcome and festivity. A border town: holidays in Biarritz are an opportunity to visit the Spanish Basque Country and its gastronomy.

Biarritz: what to eat

🍲 "Axoa"

Axoa is a typical regional dish. Rustic and convivial, often served on festive days such as fairs or festivals, there isn't really a precise recipe. The dish can be prepared in a variety of ways. Generally speaking, it's a thinly sliced beef or veal stew with a mixture of spices, chillies and onions. To be enjoyed with a wine from the region, such as Madiran.

🥮 "Le touron"

Touron is a small cake made with sugar and almonds. This delicious treat, which can be kept for several months, can be rediscovered each time thanks to a variety of flavours: vanilla, coffee, chocolate... or even more subtle combinations such as ginger or pistachio."

Biarritz: what to bring back

🌶️ There are lots of little things you can bring back from the Basque country if you go a little further than Biarritz. Go to Espelette to pick up some peppers or bring back a Bayonne ham.

How to get there?

✈️ The fastest way to get to this city is by plane.

Where to stay?

Biarritz is the pearl of France's Atlantic coast. This seaside resort is highly prized for its quality of life, its varied architecture and its world-famous surf spot.

Practical information

The Férias

The summer season is synonymous with the féria in the Basque Country! These annual festivities, characterised by running of the bulls, brass bands and other fairground activities, are a real rite of passage for all Basques. With over 1 million participants over six days, the Bayonne festivities are the most popular in the region. Would you like to enjoy the Biarritz coastline during the day, party in Bayonne in the evening and return home in peace after your wild night out? Well, it's possible! There are free shuttle buses from Biarritz to Bayonne. A journey punctuated by bawdy songs. So don your best red and white outfit and become a "festayre" for the duration of your stay.

📣 Resort safety

The Grande Plage is over 600 metres long and one of the most popular stretches of fine sand in the South West. To ensure everyone's safety, the town council has set up a nautical cell. With a rotating team of 54 lifeguards, the beach will be under surveillance 9 months out of twelve and from 1pm to 6pm! And for cyclists, there are plenty of bike shelters available in the town. That way, there's no risk of finding a wheel caught on a barrier.

💃 A lively, festive atmosphere

The capital of the Basque Country has its fair share of entertainment throughout the year. The férias season is obviously a very fun and lively time. However, for those who want to avoid the crowds, there are plenty of alternatives. For young adults, we recommend the many nightclubs that keep the city lively until dawn. For those who are not night owls, don't worry, we recommend the Bibi Beaurivage parties. These festivities are for all the family. On the programme are Basque dances, danborrada (children's brass bands), tasting competitions (omelette, Pil Pil, double fat...), concerts, flea markets and much more... The festivities generally take place from late April to early May.

🛍️Les beautiful shops

Biarritz is the Saint-Tropez of the south-west. The town centre is bursting with small-scale designers: you'll find what you're looking for in clothes, shoes, delicatessens, antiques and Basque linen. For shopping, head for Place Clémenceau, the Port Vieux or the Saint Charles district. The city is famous for its trendy shops. You'll find them on practically every street corner. You can also take a look at Les Halles, in the Saint Martin, Négresse, Iraty, Baurivage and Kleber districts, and on Avenue de Verdun or Larochefoucault. Enjoy your shopping!

📷 High tourist numbers in summer

In summer, the population of this beautiful maritime city increases tenfold! So if you're agoraphobic, we advise you to come in very small numbers before and after the summer season. In June and October, the sun is always out and the risk of a heatwave is much lower than in July and August.
