Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Berlin Kudamm opened in 1989, the same year as the fall of the wall, and was enlarged in 1996. This is the oldest of the three art'otel establishments to have opened in the German capital. Here guests can discover the strange universe of the artist Wolf Vostell, one of the creators of the happening movement or environmental art. However, the "hotel version" is toned down and politically correct! This urban hotel is recommended to art lovers or those simply looking for a bit of colour during their stay in Berlin.

    Location 9.45 /10

Only a short distance from Kurfürstendamm (ku'Damm to those who know it well), the aptly-named Berlin Kudamm art'otel enjoys the proximity of the famous and lively avenue (shopping malls, bars, restaurants, entertainment, tourist attractions, etc.), but is withdrawn from the bustle as it is situated in a quiet street. There are four metro stations nearby: Kurfürstendamm, Augsburger Straße, Spicherstrasse and Uhlandstraße.

    Accommodation 7.50 /10

The art'otel opened in 1990 with 75 rooms, and 58 additional rooms were added in 1996. Three categories of accommodation units share the building's seven storeys: standard, superior and studio (executive). An original detail: the room number is projected onto the wall-to-wall carpet in the corridor. The newer rooms stand out for their refined furniture and a different design and colour scheme, but generally the style and the facilities remain exactly the same: flat-screen TV, mini bar, safe, radio, phone, individual air conditioning, free Wi-Fi connection and pieces of artwork by the famous Vostell with explanatory texts. There is no wardrobe, however, so guests must hang their clothes on a clothes rack. The bathrooms offer two completely different worlds: the older ones have rather brightly coloured yellow flooring while the newer ones have red tiles, which is easier on the eyes. The latter are fitted with an ultra-modern sink. The studios are spacious and equipped with a coffee machine, some free beverages, bathrobes, and a double sink.

    Overview 7.65 /10

Although many establishments in the capital are becoming increasingly extreme in terms of their trendy, simple design, despite being 20 years old, this hotel can boast belonging to the trendy category of Berlin hotels. It regularly undergoes renovation work and its style is therefore quite modern. However, there is one snag: the presence of Wolf Vostell's art is not immediately noticeable when you arrive in the hotel's lobby. It does however become more and more apparent throughout the hotel, thanks to the discrete sculptures and paintings dotted about here and there... However, you must be aquatinted with the artist and his work to recognise these! The entrance hall stands out for its tangy decor, with colourful armchairs and the use of varied and diverse materials: a marble-clad reception area, parquet flooring, wooden columns... However there are no leisure or sports facilities here: you will not find a spa, a gym or a business centre. The art'otel does, however, have an interior courtyard, which is quite an asset in a hotel of this size.

    Food and drink 5.45 /10

Much like many hotels in Berlin and the rest of the art'otel establishments, the Kudamm does not have a real restaurant. It should be noted that the culinary competition is tough in the neighbourhood! However, the light menu on offer at "Bar 5" or the room service available until 1.00 am (in collaboration with the neighbouring Stars restaurant) should satisfy any cravings: nachos, wraps, sandwiches, pasta, pizzas, salads... All of this at an unbeatable price: at approximately £4.50. Breakfast is served in a pretty (and original) room on the ground floor from 6.30am to 11.00am in the form of a buffet of hot and cold dishes. Guests are invited to eat at large tables, and the decor here is in keeping with the rest of the establishment.

    To know

This Berlin building was once a cheap hotel that did not receive many guests. Light-years from the modern art'otel we know now, the hotel has come a long way since then. However, perhaps its past led to the hotel choosing this specific artist to dominate its decor? All art'otel establishments - belonging to the Park Plaza Group - choose a specific artist (usually German) to establish the theme of the hotel's decor: Andy Warhol in the "City Center West" version and Georg Baselitz in the "Mitte" version, for example. The group has other establishments in Potsdam, Cologne, Dresden and Budapest, and is planning on opening new ones in London, Amsterdam and Marrakech...

The Residenz is a boutique hotel with 77 guest rooms that started its career shortly after World War II. It actually opened in 1882 and has undergone constant renovations since, with great care being taken to protect the building. The interior breaks away from the modern style favoured by most of the hotels in the area. The Residenz has retained a classic style despite adopting all the necessary modern amenities. It has tanning beds, massage parlours, a sauna, and a fitness centre.

The quotation above the entrance to the Concorde immediately sets the tone for the rest of the establishment: 'At first, I didn't feel like I was in Berlin - everything reminded me of France'. Indeed, the hotel might be located at the very heart of the German capital, but you wouldn't necessarily know it until you look out the window. The very French ambience will undoubtedly be a hit with foreigners, as well the comfort and stylish decor, but if you have a thing against chain hotels, you'd best look elsewhere!

This hotel is a member of the German chain, Gran City, and nestles at the heart of the sophisticated district of Charlottenburg, a stone's throw from the famous Ku'damm avenue. It is a comfortable 4-star establishment, but is slightly lacking in terms of facilities. However, it is nicely decorated and has a sushi bar where you can enjoy fusion cuisine with Latin American influences. Guests who book into one of the executive rooms, which are called 'business rooms' here, have free access to the executive lounge reserved for them, and can use the computers and printer provided here. Fitness fanatics, meanwhile, can cross the road to use the facilities of the neighbouring hotel, the Berlin Zentrum.

Although it opened in the 80's, the Steigenberger Hotel is so modern and trendy that it looks as though it was built yesterday... However, it should be mentioned that renovations are routinely carried out in this establishment. In addition, the hotel has modern amenities, relaxation facilities, and a large business centre... The Steigenberger is therefore suited to any type of stay and clientele. However, there is a slight drawback: the comings and goings in the lobby when big conferences are held. The general bustle on these occasions is exhausting.

This unpretentious member of the German Grand City chain benefits from a highly practical location if you are looking to discover the famous Kurfürstendamm avenue and the stylish areas of former West Berlin. Having said that, don't expect to find a luxury establishment. The 3 star Grand City Berlin Ku'damm offers few facilities and its 81 guest rooms are small and rather basic, providing no more than the strict minimum. Internet access is charged.

Its name may be sunny but the California Hotel does little to light up Kurfürstendamm avenue, where it has been residing for 25 years. Even its 4 star status is deceiving in a city where hotels are continuously outdoing each other in terms of their imaginative interior decoration. Despite the opening of a brand new section and a few originally themed suites, the California is far below the general standard of its competitors. Although the interior decoration is not very original, the hotel does offer quality services.

The Berlin City Center opened in 2002 and is the newest of Berlin's art'otel establishments. Art by the world famous Andy Warhol was chosen to decorate the walls of this decidedly pop-art space, which is easily recognizable from the outside thanks to the giant stickers and posters on the facade. Although there are no sporting facilities and there is no spa centre or gastronomic restaurant, this enables you to better appreciate the establishment's two main assets: its location and its decor. This urban hotel is an establishment recommended for art lovers, or for those who simply want a bit of colour during their stay in Berlin.

The chunk of wall displayed near the front door is the first clue. Built in 1987, the Westin Grand Hotel replaced a shopping centre destroyed during the Great War. This establishment inherited its predecessor's refinement, as well as a few almost identically reconstructed former characteristics. The Berlin Movenpick hotel is much like its home town. It's a surprisingly trendy establishment. It was built in 1914 by Herr Siemens, opposite his first factory, and still shows many industrial architectural elements of that era, associated with a modern interior and noble materials such as European wallnut wood. With items taken from the ancient next-door railway station decorating each floor, the industrial interior is complete. The establishment includes 243 fully-equipped rooms (the standard ones feature a bathtub designed by Philippe Starck), a business centre with two computers connected to the Internet, a gym and a sauna. The restaurant and its large bay window which opens up in the summer are worthy of mention.
