Hotel Concorde Hotel Berlin Hotel 5 star
Augsburger Strasse 41 10789 Berlin Berlin, Germany
Amy Adejokun Section editor

The quotation above the entrance to the Concorde immediately sets the tone for the rest of the establishment: 'At first, I didn't feel like I was in Berlin - everything reminded me of France'. Indeed, the hotel might be located at the very heart of the German capital, but you wouldn't necessarily know it until you look out the window. The very French ambience will undoubtedly be a hit with foreigners, as well the comfort and stylish decor, but if you have a thing against chain hotels, you'd best look elsewhere!

    Location 9.23 /10

The Concorde Hotel stands on the corner of Kurfürstendamm (Ku'Damm for those in the know) and enjoys all the advantages this major artery of the city has to offer, including shopping centres, bars, restaurants, entertainment and various tourist attractions. In fact, there's so much going on here you just won't know what to do next. There are also three metro stations in the vicinity, namely Kurfürstendamm, Augsburger Straße and Uhlandstraße - perfect for getting around in record time!

    Accommodation 8.10 /10

There is a hint as to the size of the Concorde's guest rooms in the quotation on the plaque at the entrance, which proudly reads "I've never seen such big rooms"; indeed, it's worth pointing out that the Deluxe rooms boast a floor area of 40-50m², although this is not the case for the Superior rooms, which are far less spacious! The Concorde also has Executive rooms and Suites, and all rooms feature stylish contemporary decor incorporating straight lines and geometrical forms. The decor is generally suited to the tastes of both men and women, particularly as the inviting colour schemes add a touch of warmth during the long winter months. The rooms feature brown carpet in the entrance and striped carpet in the bedroom itself, as well as velour bedspreads and modern artwork, although it is worth remembering that some of the suites feature entirely different, all-white decor. As far as amenities are concerned, you'll have everything you need, including a phone, king size bed, safe, mini bar, flat screen television with keypad, bathroom scales, slippers, bathrobes, individual air conditioning, free Internet connection and a spacious bathroom complete with bathtub and shower, phone and welcome toiletries from luxury perfumery Annick Goutal.

    Overview 7.95 /10

Guests are greeted by a huge lobby furnished with an equally large reception desk. As is rather standard in a superior 5 star hotel, there is a lot of marble in the decor here, though it doesn't overwhelm all of the communal areas like in some resorts on the Mediterranean coasts. The entrance hall might not be the most original, but the original modern artwork (paintings and sculptures) displayed and there gives the hotel a rather personal touch that others in the chain don't necessarily have. The Concorde also hasn't forgotten to include the essential well-being centre any newcomer to the hotel industry just has to have. However, whilst the spa is spacious, it offers little in the way of facilities other than a sauna, hammam and gym, and guests will have to make do with a small freshwater pool in lieu of a proper swimming pool. When it comes to the business centre, however, there really is nothing to fault, and there are even four computers provided for guests' convenience.

    Food and drink 7.60 /10

The names of the hotel's two restaurants and bar certainly have a touch of France about them, starting with the Saint Germain, which is only open from 6:30am to 11:00am during the week and until midday at weekends. It serves a tasty American breakfast as a buffet, which includes fresh fruit juices. The Brasserie du Faubourg, however, serves up modern interpretations of the classic dishes one might expect to see served in a typical French cafe (including steak-frites, Niçoise salad, Crêpe Suzette and chocolate mousse) in a 70-seater restaurant where the decor is far more stylish than you would expect in a typical brasserie! The prices at both restaurants are very reasonable, including a two-course set menu for (all prices approximate) 11 pounds, the 'Canard' (Duck) set menu for 21 pounds, and a three-course set menu (including wine) for 34 pounds. Last but not least, you have the Faubourg Lounge and the Lutèce Bar, where you can relax with a drink until the wee hours of morning.

    To know

If you're looking for somewhere with a little history behind it, then this probably isn't the place for you. The Concorde, designed by famous Berlin architect Jan Kleihues, was built from scratch in November 2009. In addition to its guest rooms, it houses a 2,200m² business area with a total of 16 multi-purpose rooms.

      • Advantages

Petit déjeuner Kolossal. Une centaine de choix différents. D'excellente qualité. Carte de thés longue comme le bras. Bonne Brasserie française à prix honnêtes. Station de métro juste en face.

      • Disavantages

Peu de charme mais on y dort tellement bien! J'ai adoré.

Although it opened in the 80's, the Steigenberger Hotel is so modern and trendy that it looks as though it was built yesterday... However, it should be mentioned that renovations are routinely carried out in this establishment. In addition, the hotel has modern amenities, relaxation facilities, and a large business centre... The Steigenberger is therefore suited to any type of stay and clientele. However, there is a slight drawback: the comings and goings in the lobby when big conferences are held. The general bustle on these occasions is exhausting.

The Berlin Kudamm opened in 1989, the same year as the fall of the wall, and was enlarged in 1996. This is the oldest of the three art'otel establishments to have opened in the German capital. Here guests can discover the strange universe of the artist Wolf Vostell, one of the creators of the happening movement or environmental art. However, the "hotel version" is toned down and politically correct! This urban hotel is recommended to art lovers or those simply looking for a bit of colour during their stay in Berlin.

This hotel is a member of the German chain, Gran City, and nestles at the heart of the sophisticated district of Charlottenburg, a stone's throw from the famous Ku'damm avenue. It is a comfortable 4-star establishment, but is slightly lacking in terms of facilities. However, it is nicely decorated and has a sushi bar where you can enjoy fusion cuisine with Latin American influences. Guests who book into one of the executive rooms, which are called 'business rooms' here, have free access to the executive lounge reserved for them, and can use the computers and printer provided here. Fitness fanatics, meanwhile, can cross the road to use the facilities of the neighbouring hotel, the Berlin Zentrum.

The Excelsior is a very nice place to stay, with several comfortable lounge areas where guests can relax, watch television, or even enjoy a game of chess. The hotel also boasts a nice, well-lit bar overlooking the patio, a good place to relax by day and by night, as well as a well-equipped gym with around a dozen machines, perfect for a good workout after a long day at work or sightseeing. Of the 316 guest rooms at the hotel only the Superior rooms have been renovated and now feature carpeted floors, a leather armchair, and a few pieces of white furniture.

The Gates is a small hotel set apart from the bustling city life of Berlin, but that nevertheless harbours a number of secrets... Indeed, despite the unassuming feel of the place, it has provided a roof over the heads of several celebrities who were friends with the owner's previous wife, a ballerina. Today, the hotel's real draw is its historical features, which are exemplified by the antique decor of the communal areas. There is nothing particularly special about the revamped guests rooms or the rest of the hotel. This establishment is a good option for visitors looking for peace and quiet during their stay.

With its superior 5 star rating, a coveted place in the Leading Hotels of the World group, and a highly evocative name, the Palace might appear at first glance to be destined for greatness. However, a few steps along the entrance hall are all it takes to break the spell: '60's sophistication has been superseded by an outdated, almost kitsch, style, light-years from real palaces like the Adlon Kempinski. Having said this, the comfort and catering services are two areas that do deserve the elevated star rating...

The chunk of wall displayed near the front door is the first clue. Built in 1987, the Westin Grand Hotel replaced a shopping centre destroyed during the Great War. This establishment inherited its predecessor's refinement, as well as a few almost identically reconstructed former characteristics. It was built in 1914 by Herr Siemens, opposite his first factory, and still shows many industrial architectural elements of that era, associated with a modern interior and noble materials such as European wallnut wood. With items taken from the ancient next-door railway station decorating each floor, the industrial interior is complete. The establishment includes 243 fully-equipped rooms (the standard ones feature a bathtub designed by Philippe Starck), a business centre with two computers connected to the Internet, a gym and a sauna.
