The Berlin Hilton is one of the city's luxury establishments, offering deluxe rooms with fantastic views over the square of Gendarmenmarkt and the Französischer Dom church. From the decoration of the 601 guest rooms to the furnishing in the communal areas, where a mixture of modern features and older items sets the scene, the interior decor has been closely thought out, right down to the smallest detail. In addition to the varied set of facilities, which include a swimming pool, a gym, a hair stylist and a beauty salon, the Hilton also boasts an à la carte restaurant that serves regional gourmet specialities. Breakfast, on the other hand, consists of a copious buffet of delicious dishes served every morning in a first-floor dining room.

    Location 6.66 /10

The Hilton hotel is in an ideal location next to a major concert hall and the Französischer Dom church, right on Gendarmenmarkt square, where a marvellous little Christmas market is held every December. The closest metro station, Stadtmitte, is right at the heart of the city. Allow approximately 20 minutes to get to Tegel airport, which is some 7 mi away, and 25 minutes to get to Schönefeld airport, which is about 14 mi away.

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

The Berlin Hilton has no fewer than 601 guest rooms in different categories. The sixth floor consists exclusively of suites. The deluxe rooms are the same size as the standard rooms (27m²) but also boast views over Gendarmenmarkt square. They were created by the interior designers Wilson Associates, who have given them a modern style featuring hints of Art Deco in places. Most of the rooms, apart from those reserved for people who suffer from allergies, have carpeted floors. Opposite the comfortable bed there is a plasma-screen television broadcasting the standard channels. Other channels are also available on request, and you can also rent films. In addition to the stylish black lamps with rounded bases set on the bedside tables, little paper lanterns have been placed on either side of the bed to create the perfect setting for reading a good book. The desk shelf can be moved and adapted to your needs, depending on whether you are staying for work reasons or are here to relax. The leather armchair next to the bed is especially comfortable. All the guest rooms are also provided with tea and coffee-making facilities and an ironing board. Two big, long chandeliers hang from the ceiling in front of the thick curtains, adding the perfect final touch to the elegant style of the decor. Two different kinds of views can be seen from the hotel, because it was built in the shape of a figure of eight with a garden at its centre. There are therefore some views over the street and others overlooking the courtyard. The bathroom boasts no fewer than three different mirrors. There is a set of Crabtree and Evelyn hospitality products waiting for you on the black marble wash basin. The bathroom is also provided with a towel-dryer, a hair-dryer and a make-up mirror.

    Overview 8.45 /10

The Berlin Hilton is one of the city's luxury establishments. It was built in 1990 and fully renovated in 2000, but small scale work is carried out every year to keep the place up to the standards expected of the brand. The focal point of the hall is the piano bar at the centre of the space. The reception counter has an impressive decorative detail: a glass top. A marble staircase leads up from the hall to the first floor. Also from the reception counter (small steps have been added so even children can see over the top), you can admire the statue of a horse. This space is furnished with a few armchairs covered in burgundy velvet and others decorated with arabesques. The Art Deco style of the chandeliers is another feature sure to catch the eye. This vast hall even has display windows where bags, jewellery and leather goods are on display, as well various little shops. One of them sells clothing by the Karl Lagerfeld brand, another sells Michalski, others sell souvenirs, necklaces and china and, last but not least, one is an office of the car hire company, Sixt. If you are staying in an executive room, you will receive a card during check-in allowing you free access to the executive lounge, which is close to the entrance on the ground floor. In here, you will find two meeting rooms that must be booked in advance, three computers with internet access, a daily newspaper service, big armchairs, and fruit, drinks and a few sandwich options at lunchtime. Near the smoking room on the first floor, you can even consider acquiring one of the works exhibited in the art gallery. It is also on this floor of the hotel that you will find the gym, which is open 24 hours a day and is equipped with 10 top-of-the-range exercise machines, two plasma-screen televisions, a rectangular indoor swimming pool, a sauna (charged) and a solarium. Don't worry if you have forgotten to bring your bathing suit, as you can get one at the entrance to the spa, where various choices are available, as well as a range of useful products to help you make the most of the facilities on offer. When staying at the Hilton, you can also call on the services of a hair stylist or visit the beauty salon. Also bear in mind that a nightclub managed by an external service provider opened here in 2010. Paris Hilton stayed in the hotel two years ago, bringing the place a bit of welcome publicity in the process.

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

A delicious and varied breakfast is served every morning in the first-floor restaurant, Beletage. You can choose from a wide selection of yoghurts, pastries, cheese, eggs and breads. Fresh orange juice and coffee are served at your table. As you enjoy your breakfast, you can admire the view of Französischer Dom church at the centre of the square through the huge picture windows. This dining room has a carpeted floor, purple velvet armchairs and a big wooden table with blue stools, and can accommodate up to 250 guests. Lunch and dinner, meanwhile, are served at the à la carte restaurant, the Mark Brandenburg. The decor in this dining room combines classic features (a wooden staircase with a red rug, and a fireplace) with Art Deco items and a few period lithographs. The menu consists of specialities from the region, including, for example, crispy duck with potatoes accompanied by two varieties of cabbage (£23), pork medallion, meat stew and various soups and fish dishes.

    To know

The hotel was designed by a major firm of architects from Singapore. Half of the guests at the hotel are German, but the Hilton also welcomes many visitors from North America, the UK, Spain, France, Holland and Greece.

Much like many of its sister establishments, the Radisson Blu, which opened in 2004, quickly identified the potential of this Berlin neighbourhood situated in former East Germany. The renown of the group and the original architectural style took care of the rest, turning it into one of the capital's most famous hotels. Unlike the cold and charmless design favoured by other hotel groups, this establishment has created a fun atmosphere, in particular thanks to its massive aquarium in the middle of the lobby. This hotel caters to all: couples, families, and lone travellers of all ages!

This four-star establishment is a member of the German hotel chain Maritim. It has a big capacity and enjoys an excellent location on Friedrichstrasse, one of the main shopping streets in Berlin. Another advantage of the Maritim proArte is its indoor swimming pool and sauna. It also offers a very useful bike hire service, giving guests the possibility of getting around the city on two wheels, which is a perfect transport solution - especially in summer! The hotel's guest rooms are comfortable, but the eclectic decor in the communal areas, especially the lobby and its variety of rather odd works of art, might not be quite what you were expecting.

At the foot of the Brandenburg Gate, this highly luxurious hotel aspires to be the worthy successor of the illustrious hotel located on the same spot and destroyed during World War 2, but it does claim a modern facet to its service and decor. Managed by the Kempinski group, this hotel is hailed by all as a gem of architecture, with perfect technique and ambiance. These assets did not leave celebrities such as Greta Garbo and Charlie Chaplin or still, many politicians, who all stayed at this hotel, unmoved. Ideal for a little break or even just a little glimpse!

Mere mention of the word "Sofitel" is a guarantee of French luxury and know-how all over the world. The Berlin Gendarmenmarkt outpost is no exception to the rule and even brings some of its own additional touches, notably in the decor. The attractive combination of its ultra-modern design and the Communist-era architecture is impressive. It is a moderate-sized establishment looked after in a superlative manner by an efficient, friendly team, and is well worth a stay if you can afford the rates!

This two-star hotel belongs to the French chain Accor, and enjoys a good geographical location about 10 minutes on foot from Potsdamer Platz. It has a simple design and offers bright and comfortable guest rooms. Even though they are rather small, the establishment has thought up an ingenious way of transforming the double rooms into triples: by featuring a desk that can be converted into a bed. The Ibis Potsdamer Platz serves breakfast from early in the morning, starting at 4:00am, which is handy for anyone who may have a plane or train to catch.

In a nice setting, the large restaurant serves the three meals of the day, as well as large buffets, especially in the morning. On the top floor there is a gym and, if you like the heat, a sauna and sun room. If you are planning on driving to the hotel, the hotel has a 70-space car park, or alternatively, you can rent a car from the car rental company located next to the hotel. The guest rooms have simple interiors that include all the necessary mod cons: flat-screen television, mini-bar, safe, etc.

The original facade of this establishment, one of the German capital's finest, says a great deal about its illustrious past, and the Hôtel de Rome is in fact one of the few luxury hotels to have taken up residence in a period establishment. Having said that, it's still hard to imagine the wonders concealed behind its walls, a tasteful combination of old and contemporary, from the superb entrance hall to the wonderful spa housed in the building's former vault. This hotel comes highly recommended to all those who have the means to stay there, and if you haven't, at least try the restaurant!

The chunk of wall displayed near the front door is the first clue. Built in 1987, the Westin Grand Hotel replaced a shopping centre destroyed during the Great War. This establishment inherited its predecessor's refinement, as well as a few almost identically reconstructed former characteristics. The rest of the hotel teeters between a classical and a contemporary style. Everyone should be able to find what they are looking for here... as long as they can afford it of course!

This once sad little corner of former East Germany has since been taken over by a large number of art galleries, boutiques, lively bars, and even celebrities. The Berlin Movenpick hotel is much like its home town. It's a surprisingly trendy establishment. It was built in 1914 by Herr Siemens, opposite his first factory, and still shows many industrial architectural elements of that era, associated with a modern interior and noble materials such as European wallnut wood. With items taken from the ancient next-door railway station decorating each floor, the industrial interior is complete. The establishment includes 243 fully-equipped rooms (the standard ones feature a bathtub designed by Philippe Starck), a business centre with two computers connected to the Internet, a gym and a sauna. The restaurant and its large bay window which opens up in the summer are worthy of mention.
