The original facade of this establishment, one of the German capital's finest, says a great deal about its illustrious past, and the Hôtel de Rome is in fact one of the few luxury hotels to have taken up residence in a period establishment. Having said that, it's still hard to imagine the wonders concealed behind its walls, a tasteful combination of old and contemporary, from the superb entrance hall to the wonderful spa housed in the building's former vault. This hotel comes highly recommended to all those who have the means to stay there, and if you haven't, at least try the restaurant!

    Location 6.45 /10

The Hôtel de Rome is housed in a period building just a stone's throw from the majestic Unter den Linden ("Under the lime trees" in English) avenue, Gendarmenmarkt and Friedrichstraße and stands on the Bebelplatz, a square which somewhat resembles the Place Vendôme in Paris but without the jewellers' shops (though these are also not too far away!). You might have a wide selection of tourist attractions in the vicinity here, including the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and the Alexanderplatz, among others, but the nearest metro station is in fact a ten-minute walk away.

    Accommodation 8.90 /10

Given the dimensions of the hotel you could be forgiven for expecting an impressive number of guest rooms... so you'd probably be surprised to find that the Hôtel de Rome has "only" 146 of them, divided between no fewer than nine different categories, including 43 suites. It will all no doubt become clearer when we tell you that the standard room size is between 35 and 38m2! Although they vary in terms of size and layout (which is inevitable in an old and protected building), the design is almost identical in all of the rooms, with low-key contemporary decor in shades of red, black and grey. In addition to the basic amenities (television, phone, safe, mini-bar, etc.) you'll also find the rooms here have certain little extras to make your stay more pleasant, including an iPod dock and a DVD-player and a bathroom which not only has both a bathtub and a shower but also speakers so you can listen to the TV while you brush your teeth! Only the four "Historic" Suites, housed in the former bank managers' offices, provide different surroundings which break entirely from the overall style of the hotel and will take you right back to the 19th Century, with parquet flooring, wood panelling, an LCD fireplace, fur blankets, etc. As a rather sad anecdote, you might be interested to know that some of the walls still bear bullet marks from the Second World War.

    Overview 9.50 /10

One word immediately springs to mind as you climb the front steps of the building: grandiose. The two automatic doors open in to an entrance hall decked with four large vases followed by a lobby surrounded by pillars and topped with a glass roof, and you really can't miss the reception desk. The lobby sets the tone for the rest of the establishment, with black (or rather dark colours in general), glass and steel dominating the surroundings, and there are four lounge areas furnished with velour sofas where you can relax in an ambience combining old and contemporary as you wait to be seen. The five storeys of the hotel, two of which were added in 2006, are served by four lifts (one of which is reserved for disabled guests) and there are a choice of two terraces to enjoy, one open to non-residents and the other reserved exclusively for guests staying at the hotel. Last but not least, don't forget to check out the spa, one of the finest and most original in the city, housed in the former vault of the bank and still bearing many of its original features, such as the cupboards in the manicure room. The story goes that those working here were not familiar with the combination code and were therefore forced to pierce through another door to access the 'treasure'. However, by the irony of fate, there were no Deutschmarks to be found inside! In addition to the large gym, equipped with ten or so machines, the well-being centre houses a sauna, a hammam, six treatment rooms and a superb illuminated swimming pool. The hotel also has a business centre equipped with two computers, but do remember that it will cost you more to connect to the Internet here than in your room.

    Food and drink 9.20 /10

The Hôtel de Rome has only one restaurant, the Parioli, serving European, Mediterranean and primarily Italian cuisine in honour of the name of the hotel. If you're on a tight budget, try the reasonably-priced lunch menu, which will set you back ?19 for two courses, since for dinner you're looking at ?79! The dining room itself features elegant, low-key decor in the same colours as the rest of the hotel, namely red, black and brown, through there is a touch of beige thrown in to brighten the place up a little. There is also a pretty little courtyard where guests can enjoy breakfast during the summer months. The bar, meanwhile, is dark and modern and leads through to a small room featuring colonnades and mosaic floors and offering beautiful views across the square. As well as a snack menu, the bar also serves breakfast at peak times, as well as afternoon tea, served in a separate room set aside for this purpose. Ask at reception for opening times.

    To know

The Hôtel de Rome is housed in a former bank and owes its name to its predecessor, the Grand Hôtel de Rome, which once stood on the site of the current Ferrari store. The Rocco Forte group has since skilfully transformed this former headquarters of the Dresdner Bank into one of the jewels in Berlin's luxury hotel crown. It might be worth remembering that Internet access will set you back the modest sum of ?10 an hour or ?20 a day to use in your room and a few euros more at the business centre.

Most of the guests staying at this elegant hotel, which stands between the avenues of 'Unter den Linden' and 'Friedrichstraße', do not know about its history. The chunk of wall displayed near the front door is the first clue. Built in 1987, the Westin Grand Hotel replaced a shopping centre destroyed during the Great War. This establishment inherited its predecessor's refinement, as well as a few almost identically reconstructed former characteristics. The rest of the hotel teeters between a classical and a contemporary style. Everyone should be able to find what they are looking for here... as long as they can afford it of course!

Mere mention of the word "Sofitel" is a guarantee of French luxury and know-how all over the world. The Berlin Gendarmenmarkt outpost is no exception to the rule and even brings some of its own additional touches, notably in the decor. The attractive combination of its ultra-modern design and the Communist-era architecture is impressive. It is a moderate-sized establishment looked after in a superlative manner by an efficient, friendly team, and is well worth a stay if you can afford the rates!

This four-star establishment is a member of the German hotel chain Maritim. It has a big capacity and enjoys an excellent location on Friedrichstrasse, one of the main shopping streets in Berlin. Another advantage of the Maritim proArte is its indoor swimming pool and sauna. It also offers a very useful bike hire service, giving guests the possibility of getting around the city on two wheels, which is a perfect transport solution - especially in summer! The hotel's guest rooms are comfortable, but the eclectic decor in the communal areas, especially the lobby and its variety of rather odd works of art, might not be quite what you were expecting.

From the decoration of the 601 guest rooms to the furnishing in the communal areas, where a mixture of modern features and older items sets the scene, the interior decor has been closely thought out, right down to the smallest detail. In addition to the varied set of facilities, which include a swimming pool, a gym, a hair stylist and a beauty salon, the Hilton also boasts an à la carte restaurant that serves regional gourmet specialities. Within walking distance of Potsdamer Platz, the NH Berlin Mitte offers the services of a typical NH hotel. In a nice setting, the large restaurant serves the three meals of the day, as well as large buffets, especially in the morning. On the top floor there is a gym and, if you like the heat, a sauna and sun room. If you are planning on driving to the hotel, the hotel has a 70-space car park, or alternatively, you can rent a car from the car rental company located next to the hotel. The guest rooms have simple interiors that include all the necessary mod cons: flat-screen television, mini-bar, safe, etc.

Much like many of its sister establishments, the Radisson Blu, which opened in 2004, quickly identified the potential of this Berlin neighbourhood situated in former East Germany. The renown of the group and the original architectural style took care of the rest, turning it into one of the capital's most famous hotels. Unlike the cold and charmless design favoured by other hotel groups, this establishment has created a fun atmosphere, in particular thanks to its massive aquarium in the middle of the lobby. This hotel caters to all: couples, families, and lone travellers of all ages!

The establishment includes 243 fully-equipped rooms (the standard ones feature a bathtub designed by Philippe Starck), a business centre with two computers connected to the Internet, a gym and a sauna.
