There are many prestigious hotel groups to have opened an establishment in the German capital and Swissotel is no exception. It's a reassuring establishment for those who are not used to travelling, and a guarantee of quality for globetrotters. Although the interior decorating is modern enough, it doesn't really stand out among its sister establishments in other countries. Although this hotel is in Berlin, it could very well be anywhere in the world... It's an establishment to be recommend to travellers who don't like surprises..

    Location 8.33 /10

The Swissotel is located on the corner of Kurfürstendamm (Ku'Damm for those in the know) and enjoys all of the advantages this major artery of the city has to offer, including shopping centres, bars, restaurants, entertainment, and various tourist attractions... In fact, there's so much going on here you just won't know what to do next. The hotel also enjoys the proximity of 3 metro stations: Kurfürstendamm, Augsburger Straße, and Uhlandstraße. It's the best way to discover the entire city in record time.

    Accommodation 8.00 /10

As many of its sister establishments, the capacity of the Swissotel is close to 400 rooms... It has nothing in common with smaller, more charming hotels, with its 360 accommodation units that come in several categories: classic, executive, and suites. The interior is nondescript and modern, especially in the classic rooms. The semi-circle suites are a lot more original, even just in terms of their architecture. As far as the amenities are concerned, there's nothing to complain about: plasma screen TV, 2 phones, a coffee machine, an iron and ironing board, a safe, a minibar, Wifi access, individual air conditioning, and marble clad bathroom with "Swiss Spa" products, a phone, and a shower and a bathtub. Occupants of the executive rooms enjoy the exclusive use of a lounge area reserved especially for them. There is a choice between 2 views: the interior courtyard or the street. You should also note that the Swissotel is the only hotel in Berlin to offer free movies.

    Overview 7.80 /10

There are 2 glass lifts (with a lift attendant) to take guests from the main entrance to the reception area, which - this is an original detail - is located on the first floor of the building. There are another 3 transparent lifts to take guests up to their bedrooms. If you're afraid of heights, this is not the place for you, as the building is built on 10 floors. The lobby occupies the space between the corridors leading to the rooms and the street. It's a nice place with a glass roof, under which there are armchairs and sofas where you can wait in a well lit setting. There are 2 bars on either side of the reception desk, providing another way to wait without going bonkers! There is also a series of paintings that guests may admire. These are changed on a regular basis but there's no way of knowing who the next artist will be. As far as facilities are concerned, the Swissotel shows room for improvement. There is a tiny well-being centre with a sauna and a fitness room, but it does stay open 24/7. There are 2 computers in small offices that are available to guests. The Swissotel also has a business centre that includes several conference rooms.

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

At first sight, it would seem that the Swissotel has taken a focus on drinks rather than on food... The hotel has only one restaurant for the two bars that occupy the lobby. However, one of the bars does offer a selection of snacks. In the main restaurant, the 44, the Croatian chef offers 'International experimental cuisine', a fact hastily explained by management. It's a culinary experience that is mainly based on herbs, so no need to panic! The 44 serves all 3 daily meals and the menu it offers at lunch and dinner is reasonably priced: £19 for 2 dishes, £50 for 4 dishes. As far as the interior decorating is concerned, the parquet floor is nice and the benches and beige chairs are placed sufficiently far apart. The maximum capacity of the restaurant is a mere 75 guests. Don't forget to have a look out the bay windows: the view on the lively Kurfürstendamm is magnificent, both in winter and in summer...

    To know

As many of its Berlin counterparts, the Swissotel has elected residence in an ancient abandoned shopping mall. The older buildings were torn down to make way for the futuristic and round Swissotel building, which opened in 2001.

The Breibtreu 31 is a small friendly hotel that opened in 1995. This original and modern establishment was entirely built according to ecological standards. It is elegant and sober and stands out for its attention to detail and peaceful surroundings. A couple of ounces of finesse in the heart of Berlin's bustle! The small size of the establishment hasn't prevented it from having two bars, a restaurant, a small area for relaxing and a flower shop. Recommended for guests of all ages.

This modern, functional city hotel belonging to Spanish hotel chain Abba only opened in 2009 and is actually pretty well-located, just a few minutes' walk from the famous shopping street commonly referred to as Kudamm. The hotel also boasts a car park and a well-being centre consisting of a gym, a sauna and a jacuzzi surrounded by deckchairs. The guest rooms, meanwhile, come with all the basics you would expect, including a television, a mini-bar and even a trouser-press. What's more, if you've forgotten to bring your laptop with you or you simply need to quickly surf the internet, you can always borrow one from reception.

Open since 2004, the Ku' Damm 101 offers a pleasant insight into the present trend of the hospitality industry, demonstrated by the ultra-contemporary architecture and decor it displays. Guests move around in a stylish hotel where minimalist decor and originality are the hallmarks of its design. Located outside the city, the Ku Damm enjoys delightfully quiet surroundings. Avoid it, however, if you are allergic to walking: the nearest underground station is a 10 minute walk away. We would primarily recommend this hotel to young people.

The Berlin City Center opened in 2002 and is the newest of Berlin's art'otel establishments. Art by the world famous Andy Warhol was chosen to decorate the walls of this decidedly pop-art space, which is easily recognizable from the outside thanks to the giant stickers and posters on the facade. Although there are no sporting facilities and there is no spa centre or gastronomic restaurant, this enables you to better appreciate the establishment's two main assets: its location and its decor. This urban hotel is an establishment recommended for art lovers, or for those who simply want a bit of colour during their stay in Berlin.

This unpretentious member of the German Grand City chain benefits from a highly practical location if you are looking to discover the famous Kurfürstendamm avenue and the stylish areas of former West Berlin. Having said that, don't expect to find a luxury establishment. The 3 star Grand City Berlin Ku'damm offers few facilities and its 81 guest rooms are small and rather basic, providing no more than the strict minimum. Internet access is charged.

Its name may be sunny but the California Hotel does little to light up Kurfürstendamm avenue, where it has been residing for 25 years. Even its 4 star status is deceiving in a city where hotels are continuously outdoing each other in terms of their imaginative interior decoration. Despite the opening of a brand new section and a few originally themed suites, the California is far below the general standard of its competitors. Although the interior decoration is not very original, the hotel does offer quality services.

This hotel is a member of the German chain, Gran City, and nestles at the heart of the sophisticated district of Charlottenburg, a stone's throw from the famous Ku'damm avenue. It is a comfortable 4-star establishment, but is slightly lacking in terms of facilities. However, it is nicely decorated and has a sushi bar where you can enjoy fusion cuisine with Latin American influences. Guests who book into one of the executive rooms, which are called 'business rooms' here, have free access to the executive lounge reserved for them, and can use the computers and printer provided here. Fitness fanatics, meanwhile, can cross the road to use the facilities of the neighbouring hotel, the Berlin Zentrum.

It actually opened in 1882 and has undergone constant renovations since, with great care being taken to protect the building. The interior breaks away from the modern style favoured by most of the hotels in the area. The Residenz has retained a classic style despite adopting all the necessary modern amenities. It has tanning beds, massage parlours, a sauna, and a fitness centre.

Having said that, it's still hard to imagine the wonders concealed behind its walls, a tasteful combination of old and contemporary, from the superb entrance hall to the wonderful spa housed in the building's former vault. This hotel comes highly recommended to all those who have the means to stay there, and if you haven't, at least try the restaurant!

At the foot of the Brandenburg Gate, this highly luxurious hotel aspires to be the worthy successor of the illustrious hotel located on the same spot and destroyed during World War 2, but it does claim a modern facet to its service and decor. Managed by the Kempinski group, this hotel is hailed by all as a gem of architecture, with perfect technique and ambiance. These assets did not leave celebrities such as Greta Garbo and Charlie Chaplin or still, many politicians, who all stayed at this hotel, unmoved. Most of the guests staying at this elegant hotel, which stands between the avenues of 'Unter den Linden' and 'Friedrichstraße', do not know about its history. The chunk of wall displayed near the front door is the first clue. Built in 1987, the Westin Grand Hotel replaced a shopping centre destroyed during the Great War. This establishment inherited its predecessor's refinement, as well as a few almost identically reconstructed former characteristics. The rest of the hotel teeters between a classical and a contemporary style. Everyone should be able to find what they are looking for here... as long as they can afford it of course!

The Berlin Movenpick hotel is much like its home town. It's a surprisingly trendy establishment. It was built in 1914 by Herr Siemens, opposite his first factory, and still shows many industrial architectural elements of that era, associated with a modern interior and noble materials such as European wallnut wood. With items taken from the ancient next-door railway station decorating each floor, the industrial interior is complete. The establishment includes 243 fully-equipped rooms (the standard ones feature a bathtub designed by Philippe Starck), a business centre with two computers connected to the Internet, a gym and a sauna. The restaurant and its large bay window which opens up in the summer are worthy of mention.
