Ideally located, this design hotel combines a multitude of attractive decorative details, including huge fringed chandeliers in the staircase and shimmering, golden sections of wall in the U-shaped lounge. The rooms are equipped with all of the modern amenities: a sophisticated stereo system with a CD player, a plasma-screen TV, large cupboards, and tea and coffee-making facilities. The restaurant is particularly impressive with its gourmet cuisine and large windows overlooking a small garden, as is the 600m² spa on the top floor of the hotel, overlooking the city. A multitude of treatments are available in individual rooms in a Zen atmosphere, lulled by the sound of soft music. Guests can choose from shiatsu, Thai or hot stone massages, Hawaiian treatments, and many more!

    Location 5.46 /10

Located on Potsdamer Platz, the symbol of urban renewal in Berlin, The Mandala is 6 mi from Tegel Airport and 20 mi from Schonefeld Airport.

    Accommodation 8.45 /10

Sheer curtains draped on the walls in the corridors create interesting lighting effects. The hotel's 11 storeys display small decorative elements: black and white photographs, colourful posters during the Christmas season, etc. As for the interiors of 157 guest rooms, they too are refined and elegant. Compared to some other hotels, the advantage of the standard rooms at The Mandala is their size: they measure at least 40m²! They have been fitted with green carpeting, a wooden headboard, lamps with dimmer switches for reading, and a few large and comfortable grey armchairs. Plus, if you are a stickler for detail, you will notice the desk with its large shelf and sockets carefully hidden in the drawers. There is also a stereo system and several CDs: one with Latin music, another entitled 'Day Dream', a third called 'Lazy Lounge'. If the CDs are not in your room when you arrive, do not hesitate to ask for them at reception. To complete the modern touch, each room is equipped with a plasma-screen TV and is decorated with black and white photographs of landscapes or of people in different settings, such as dancers in New York. Facing the large cupboards that hold a safe and tea and coffee-making facilities, the bathroom is hidden behind a sliding wooden door. In addition to the bathrobes, slippers, and Comfort Zone welcome toiletries, there is a heated towel rail, scales, a hair-dryer, and a make-up mirror. The green marble wash basin matches perfectly with the contours of the bathtub. If you wish to stay in a larger room, you can choose from among the 90 suites that measure between 50 and 200m².

    Overview 7.95 /10

Open since 2006, The Mandala occupies a building with a huge brick façade. This 5 star hotel benefits from an ideal location close to Potsdamer Platz, one of the main thoroughfares of Berlin, and is opposite the Sony centre, around which you will plenty of shops and restaurants. The lobby is long and narrow. To the right is the leather covered marble reception counter and at the back of the room is a grey and brown velvet sofa. A few single-line drawings of faces line the walls. A marble staircase leads to the first floor and a U-shaped lounge. The staircase has a decor feature that you will no doubt appreciate: fringed chandeliers that reflect cross-shaped patterns on the stairs. In the lounge, the hotel aims to create a tranquil atmosphere down to the smallest of details, such as the marble floor, the brown velvet chairs, and the back wall covered with golden tiles with water flowing down them. There are bench seats facing Potsdamer Platz and low tables covered with magazines and books. Plus, lounge music is played throughout the day. Without hesitation, one of The Mandala's jewels can be found on the top floor: the Ono Spa. The Spa uses Kenzo products, as well as other famous brands. Entirely decorated in white, this 600m² spa has 3 treatment rooms, a 4th room for the PowerPlate, and a 5th with a special bed for detox treatments. Before you book a massage however, we recommend that you consult the price list, as you will see that it is just as prestigious as the location and its views. The gym, meanwhile, has 7 state of the art exercise machines and different types of weights.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

Like the spa, the hotel restaurant is also distinguished by its setting. The dining room is surrounded by large windows overlooking a lovely garden and is filled with natural light during the day, which makes for a charming environment, even in winter when the courtyard is covered with snow. The interior has simple lines with white tables and chairs and a few decorative elements, such as small seasonal flowers. The restaurant has an open kitchen so you can watch the dishes being prepared from the hallway leading to the dining room, and you can even watch them make their homemade bread. The lunch menu includes creative local dishes priced at £16, £25, or £35 depending on whether you choose one, two, or three courses. Just to give you a taste, you can choose from octopus with a tarama salad, cauliflower soup with pudding, risotto with clams, etc.

    To know

The Mandala is part of a very select club of design hotels in the German capital, numbering 5 in total. The hotel's name is taken from Sanskrit: Mandalas are diagrams or complex symbolic representations used in the Buddhist and Hindu religions.

The Berlin Movenpick hotel is much like its home town. It's a surprisingly trendy establishment. It was built in 1914 by Herr Siemens, opposite his first factory, and still shows many industrial architectural elements of that era, associated with a modern interior and noble materials such as European wallnut wood. With items taken from the ancient next-door railway station decorating each floor, the industrial interior is complete. The establishment includes 243 fully-equipped rooms (the standard ones feature a bathtub designed by Philippe Starck), a business centre with two computers connected to the Internet, a gym and a sauna. The restaurant and its large bay window which opens up in the summer are worthy of mention.

This two-star hotel belongs to the French chain Accor, and enjoys a good geographical location about 10 minutes on foot from Potsdamer Platz. It has a simple design and offers bright and comfortable guest rooms. Even though they are rather small, the establishment has thought up an ingenious way of transforming the double rooms into triples: by featuring a desk that can be converted into a bed. The Ibis Potsdamer Platz serves breakfast from early in the morning, starting at 4:00am, which is handy for anyone who may have a plane or train to catch.

Most of the guests staying at this elegant hotel, which stands between the avenues of 'Unter den Linden' and 'Friedrichstraße', do not know about its history. The chunk of wall displayed near the front door is the first clue. Built in 1987, the Westin Grand Hotel replaced a shopping centre destroyed during the Great War. This establishment inherited its predecessor's refinement, as well as a few almost identically reconstructed former characteristics. The rest of the hotel teeters between a classical and a contemporary style. Everyone should be able to find what they are looking for here... as long as they can afford it of course!
