Amy Adejokun Section editor

Part of the Leading of the World label, the five star Al Bustan is a modern oriental hotel. The mix of various textures, materials and colours employed can be a little on the gaudy side for guests used to more minimalist styles. The atmosphere is relaxed and the restaurants are of a high quality in the food that is served, the service given and the décor of each, especially that of the Blue Elephant, part of the internationally well-known chain. The hotel is ideal for guests needing to be close to the convention centres and although it has a high percentage of business clientele, it is open to leisure guests who are looking for a sound base from which to explore Dubai.

Al Bustan is located very close to Dubai International Airport. There isn't much to do in the surroundings and as with most hotels in Dubai it is difficult to walk around as there are no pavements; it is a well-known fact that in Dubai, one drives everywhere. The hotel is close to the Dubai World Trade Convention halls and the to the business district. Major shopping centres are all within a short drive away.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

We found the rooms to be fairly simply decorated in neutral tones with touches of colour to lighten the space. We didn't find that there was anything special about the decoration which lacks a personal touch, although the rooms do feel comfortable. The plus point is the Occitane bathroom products in the bathrooms for all room categories. There is also cable internet in all rooms. The internet is wireless in all public spaces. The hotel has a non-smoking floor, the third, for guests who like clean and fresh-smelling rooms as, although the hotels make an effort to get rid of the smell, it's not always effective. All rooms have complimentary tea and coffee facilities. A certain number of rooms have direct access to the pool which saves guests having to walk through the hotel.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The hotel as 275 rooms and suites spread over four floors. Like most Rotana hotels, the Al Bustan is very modern with a glass and aluminium clad facade. Inside, the décor has more of a Middle-Eastern feel. The hotel is built around an atrium. The lobby has a stained glass roof and galleries of rooms line the lobby from the first floor up. We found the lobby a little daunting due to its high ceilings and despite the fresh plants and palm trees it lacked intimacy and felt a little cold. The hotel has a fairly large outdoor pool with plenty of space around it so it doesn't feel cramped when the hotel is full. There is also good sun exposure making it possible to sunbathe most of the day. Like at most hotel pools in Dubai, it can be fairly noisy due to neighbouring construction works and the view is not particularly alluring. There is also an outdoor Jacuzzi by the pool which is fairly unusual for hotels in Dubai.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

There are seven restaurants. One of which is run by the world-renowned Blue Elephant chain - the effort here when it comes to the interior decoration surpasses the other restaurants by far. Designed to resemble a small Thai village, it is extremely pleasant - the restaurant has a small artificial lake with a bridge and plenty of foliage. The other restaurants, Benihana (Japanese), Come Prima (Italian), Mawal (Lebanese) and the Rodeo Grill (steakhouse) are also worth a try and very good value for money. The main restaurant, Choices, is a buffet outlet and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For a cup of tea and a slice of cake, guests will also find the Gazebo, on the dais in the lobby. The Aquarius bar by the pool side is also open all day for light snacks and refreshments.

    To know

Al Bustan is a five star hotel and is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World label which is reflected in the service. Despite what some tour operators might say in the description of the hotel, it is nowhere near a beach, although the beach is twenty minutes drive away. In the driveway guests will find that the only taxis available are hotel taxis which tend to be more expensive than ordinary state taxis which run on a meter. Fares must be bartered and agreed upon beforehand. For Club rooms, guests have access to the club lounge which is a quiet area where food is served as well as refreshments and snacks throughout the day. The hotel also has a well-equipped, good sized gym as well as squash and tennis courts, free to use for in-house guests. The hotel does not accept pets.

The Rimal Rotana is part of the Emirati Rotana chain which has numerous properties all over the city. Rotanas are known for their modern aluminium and glass structures and are a good option for families as the rooms tend to be fairly spacious. Here, the ground floor is particularly contemporary all done up in white with the latest designer furniture, giving the hotel a fresh and modern feel. The Rimal is ideal for families or groups of friends. It is also fairly well-located just a short distance from the airport and from Deira, close to the Creek. The surrounding area is fairly pleasant with shops and local restaurants on the main road.

Located alongside the Creek and at the heart of Dubai's famous golf club, the Park Hyatt offers superb facilities, its white buildings reflecting the style of an old Arabian palace topped with magnificent turquoise domes. The service, restaurants, spa, guest rooms and superbly stylish surroundings the hotel offers will undoubtedly leave a permanent impression on you, making this haven of peace and tranquillity the ideal destination for a wonderful honeymoon, unless you can't contemplate a holiday without a beach!

The Grand Hyatt is housed in a huge glass building incorporating several towers, with one of the largest leisure complexes belonging to a Dubai hotel at its feet. Families are extremely well catered for here, as there really is something for everyone; with its many upmarket services, impeccable gardens, various restaurants and swimming pools and a superb spa, you hardly need to leave the resort, unless, perhaps, you fancy spending some time on the beach. Workshops are also organised for small children and there is a children's club for under 4's accompanied by an adult.

In-keeping with the Rotana chain's contemporary glass and aluminium structures, the Rihab Rotana hotel apartments is also modern and kitted out for groups or families wishing to rent out a serviced apartment for the duration of their stay. In the way of facilities there is everything one could need although in the way of restaurants, it is probably best to explore what the city has to offer as there isn't much variety here. A smart hotel apartment establishment ideal for guests wanting to be left alone by the staff.

It is ideal for business trips, but tourists will also have a good holiday here thanks to the immense Festival City nearby. The hotel's rooms are very modern and uncluttered, its common areas are remarkable and its various services are augmented by the more numerous and luxurious ones on offer at the Intercontinental.

The chic Raffles Hotel is one of the larger more obviously opulent hotels in the city. With its instantly-noticeable pyramid structure and stereotypical Egypt-inspired interiors, the hotel has been a landmark in the area since it was erected in 2007. The hotel is situated close to Bur Dubai, the new town centre, so it isn't too far from the Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa complex. The structure has a shopping centre atmosphere which isn't unpleasant if you want to be left alone by staff to get on with it. Raffles is a great choice if you're here on business, but its facilities are varied enough to cater for families. Raffles is an upmarket hotel, so not ideal if you're on a budget, but great if you need to combine work and play due to its location close to the new centre and adjoined to the WAFI shopping centre. However, Raffles is a hotel where size matters - it will not leave you disappointed by its room sizes, that's for sure!

The staff here is extremely kind and helpful making a stay here enjoyable. The hotel is fairly large whilst staying manageable and the atmosphere is relatively easygoing. The Premier Inn Dubai International Airport is one of three Premier Inn properties in Dubai. The closest to the city centre, it is also extremely practical for early or late flights due to its proximity to the airport. With friendly service and good-value food and beverage outlets, this hotel is ideal for a short stay. It doesn't try to be a holiday hotel, but its other properties may have a livelier atmosphere in comparison. However, as in all Premier Inn hotels, the rooms are basic but clean and functional. The staff is friendly and efficient too, which helps when you've just arrived after a long flight.

The lifestyle Armani Hotel Dubai is nothing short of stunning. With every angle and curve that has been carefully studied to give the desired effect, the hotel is without doubt one of the best in the city, which is a huge statement to make, especially in Dubai, where the standard of hotels is generally very high. Mr Armani has overseen every single detail of this hotel, from the scents used throughout the hotel, to the embossed chocolates sold in the deli on the ground floor. The result is astonishing. What separates the hotel from the rest is firstly, its location, right inside the Burj Khalifa, and second, the sense of space of the hotel. Slick, sophisticated and contemporary, the hotel is a veritable success. The only downfall is that you could be anywhere in the world as there is no reminder of the destination's culture and traditions. The hotel is best-suited to couples and friends looking for the crème de la crème in luxury.

The Burj Al Arab appears on the horizon, rises out of the fog along the coastline in Jumeirah, visible from skyscraper terraces all over the city, like a myth seen in books. A real gem in its architecture, seeing the legendary hotel, the only seven star hotel in the world, is like seeing the Taj Mahal in India. It is a real architectural feat that should not be dismissed for being too showy, too brash, too contemporary, but rather revered as a symbol of this city that is no less than over the top! The hotel sits quietly glimmering in the sun along a long and wide sandy beach. The interior takes a while to grow on you, but the services and facilities are irreproachable. It's definitely worth a stay at least for a night, or if it is too pricy for your budget then do drop by for tea, but book early.

This is the second Atlantis hotel in the world. Is Atlantis The Palm, the flagship resort on Dubai's first Palm Island, a gem of a hotel or a monster of excess? Actually, it's both of them! It is perhaps the hotel that best represents Dubai, built as it is from scratch between the sea and the desert. A symbol of grandiose delusions, it is nothing less than a 'kingdom of superlatives'. Next to this immense and (in places) kitsch resort with its multitude of ultramodern facilities and restaurants staffed by award-winning chefs, hotel residents and day-trippers alike can enjoy a huge aquatic park.
