City Seasons Hotel, not to be confused with City Seasons Suites, (although part of the same group), is great value for money for guests looking for something not too flashy but comfortable and pleasant. The staff here is extremely kind and helpful making a stay here enjoyable. The hotel is fairly large whilst staying manageable and the atmosphere is relatively easygoing. Ideal for all type of holidaymakers, from couples to families and groups, this hotel, although hasn't got the luxury edge, is a good find.

    Location 4.18 /10

The hotel is located just across the street (to us, it is more of a four lane motorway) from Deira City Shopping Centre and a 10 minute drive to the Dubai Convention Centre. Ideal if you do not want to be too far from the airport which is 10 minutes away by car.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

There are 180 rooms split into three categories: premium, deluxe and suites, which are all very comfortable. The rooms are not kitted out with the latest and most contemporary of gadgets and furniture, but they are clean, light, bright and spacious. All rooms have flat large screen televisions with a variety of channels, especially for English-speaking guests. All rooms have complimentary tea and coffee making facilities. The bathrooms are on the spacious side, all with bath tubs and City Seasons own-brand toiletries.

    Overview 6.70 /10

The hotel style is closer to contemporary Arabic chic than flashy Manhattan designer boutique, however it also has it charm. The exterior looks like any skyscraper in the city, glass and aluminium clad. The ten floors are built around an atrium, the rooms lining the structure in galleries. There is a pleasant roof-top swimming pool, although the area can soon feel a little cramped. There is also a Jacuzzi. The pool area is however slightly covered by slats to avoid the intense sunshine, so if you're looking for a place to maximise your sunbathing, this roof-top pool isn't for you, but Dubai has some long and wide beaches you can always drive to in the Jumeira area. The hotel also has a sauna and massage rooms - enquire about this upon arrival as a reservation is needed.

    Food and drink 6.20 /10

The hotel has three outlets: 'New Seasons', serving a mix of international cuisine, 'Al Nawras' serving a variety of Middle-Eastern dishes and Al Nakheel, the large coffee shop on the ground floor behind the lobby area. The main restaurant is very pleasant, with large bay windows lined with plants, letting in plenty of light.

    To know

Open in 2008, the hotel looks brand new. The City Seasons Group is an Emirati chain which also owns and runs the nearby City Seasons Suites (also reviewed by us, see our profile in the Dubai hotels list). The chain also runs hotels in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi and Muscat. The hotel gym is pleasant, large and well-equipped with up to date new machines. Do keep in mind that the hotel does not sell alcoholic beverages.

    advantage

    • Cosy atmosphere despite the atrium structure.
    • Good sized practical flats, ideal for families or groups of friends.
    • Very friendly staff.
    • Pleasant roof-top pool area.
    • Free wireless internet access all over the hotel including the rooms.
    • 24 hour room service.

    disadvantages

    • The seafood restaurant feels more like an airport lounge (but the concept here was being rethought at the time of our visit).
    • The lack of atmosphere.

Situated in the middle of Dubai, very close to the shopping centers, the Metropolitan Palace is an ideal place to stay to discover the city. It associates a very nice setting to many restaurants with a varied cuisine and a panoramic pool on the upper floor.

The JW Marriott is ideal for fans of the traditional side of the Marriott hotel chain. Although the hotel does have some very good restaurants, the experience was unfortunately a disappointing one. The service was excellent but the décor of the hotel is uninspiring, dated and overall a bit drab, we are sorry to say. The distances from the rooms to the rest of the hotel can be large and it is easy to get lost. Some of the rooms have permanently locked balconies which give out onto an (indoor) atrium letting in very limited light and give sthe hotel as shopping mall feel. This is not a reflection on other Marriott hotels however, as the Renaissance just across the road is more contemporary and the newly-opened Dubai Marriott Harbour edition is a real step into the 21st Century.

The Rimal Rotana is part of the Emirati Rotana chain which has numerous properties all over the city. Rotanas are known for their modern aluminium and glass structures and are a good option for families as the rooms tend to be fairly spacious. Here, the ground floor is particularly contemporary all done up in white with the latest designer furniture, giving the hotel a fresh and modern feel. The Rimal is ideal for families or groups of friends. It is also fairly well-located just a short distance from the airport and from Deira, close to the Creek. The surrounding area is fairly pleasant with shops and local restaurants on the main road.

In-keeping with the Rotana chain's contemporary glass and aluminium structures, the Rihab Rotana hotel apartments is also modern and kitted out for groups or families wishing to rent out a serviced apartment for the duration of their stay. In the way of facilities there is everything one could need although in the way of restaurants, it is probably best to explore what the city has to offer as there isn't much variety here. A smart hotel apartment establishment ideal for guests wanting to be left alone by the staff.

The chic Raffles Hotel is one of the larger more obviously opulent hotels in the city. With its instantly-noticeable pyramid structure and stereotypical Egypt-inspired interiors, the hotel has been a landmark in the area since it was erected in 2007. The hotel is situated close to Bur Dubai, the new town centre, so it isn't too far from the Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa complex. The structure has a shopping centre atmosphere which isn't unpleasant if you want to be left alone by staff to get on with it. Raffles is a great choice if you're here on business, but its facilities are varied enough to cater for families. Raffles is an upmarket hotel, so not ideal if you're on a budget, but great if you need to combine work and play due to its location close to the new centre and adjoined to the WAFI shopping centre. However, Raffles is a hotel where size matters - it will not leave you disappointed by its room sizes, that's for sure!

The Manhattan Avenue is a moderately sized hotel hidden in the backstreets of the city close to a small mosque. There is nothing particular about the surroundings apart from the fact that there is less traffic noise and that you feel a bit more immersed in the ?real' life that unravels day-to-day in Dubai, mainly due to being surrounded by local residential blocks. Everything at the Manhattan Avenue is very average from top to bottom, but it is a good option for holidaymakers on a very tight budget wanting to spend a few days in the city. The hotel is drab and dull and could be a little cleaner. However the staff is willing and friendly.

A well located budget hotel in a popular pedestrian district offering a different view of the emirate. The well-known Ibis chain has followed its ambitious instincts and started to develop in the emirate. The lobby and adjoining bar feature a modern decor. The decor in the guest rooms is the same as in the rest of the chain: standardised but ergonomic. Good value for money in the emirate.

Exclusive, The H is quietly and self-satisfyingly elegant without being pretentious. The lifestyle Armani Hotel Dubai is nothing short of stunning. With every angle and curve that has been carefully studied to give the desired effect, the hotel is without doubt one of the best in the city, which is a huge statement to make, especially in Dubai, where the standard of hotels is generally very high. Mr Armani has overseen every single detail of this hotel, from the scents used throughout the hotel, to the embossed chocolates sold in the deli on the ground floor. The result is astonishing. What separates the hotel from the rest is firstly, its location, right inside the Burj Khalifa, and second, the sense of space of the hotel. Slick, sophisticated and contemporary, the hotel is a veritable success. The only downfall is that you could be anywhere in the world as there is no reminder of the destination's culture and traditions. The hotel is best-suited to couples and friends looking for the crème de la crème in luxury.

The Burj Al Arab appears on the horizon, rises out of the fog along the coastline in Jumeirah, visible from skyscraper terraces all over the city, like a myth seen in books. A real gem in its architecture, seeing the legendary hotel, the only seven star hotel in the world, is like seeing the Taj Mahal in India. It is a real architectural feat that should not be dismissed for being too showy, too brash, too contemporary, but rather revered as a symbol of this city that is no less than over the top! The hotel sits quietly glimmering in the sun along a long and wide sandy beach. The interior takes a while to grow on you, but the services and facilities are irreproachable. It's definitely worth a stay at least for a night, or if it is too pricy for your budget then do drop by for tea, but book early.

This is the second Atlantis hotel in the world. Is Atlantis The Palm, the flagship resort on Dubai's first Palm Island, a gem of a hotel or a monster of excess? Actually, it's both of them! It is perhaps the hotel that best represents Dubai, built as it is from scratch between the sea and the desert. A symbol of grandiose delusions, it is nothing less than a 'kingdom of superlatives'. Next to this immense and (in places) kitsch resort with its multitude of ultramodern facilities and restaurants staffed by award-winning chefs, hotel residents and day-trippers alike can enjoy a huge aquatic park. It is like a city within a city, making it ideal for families, but if you are looking for charm and intimacy, you're probably better off elsewhere!
