The Grand Hyatt is housed in a huge glass building incorporating several towers, with one of the largest leisure complexes belonging to a Dubai hotel at its feet. Families are extremely well catered for here, as there really is something for everyone; with its many upmarket services, impeccable gardens, various restaurants and swimming pools and a superb spa, you hardly need to leave the resort, unless, perhaps, you fancy spending some time on the beach. Workshops are also organised for small children and there is a children's club for under 4's accompanied by an adult.

    Location 4.0 /10

Adjacent to Garhoud Bridge, 3 mi from Deira, Dubai's traditional city centre, and just over 3 mi from the international airport The city centre is around 10 minutes away, as is the airport (depending on the traffic!)

    Accommodation 8.45 /10

The 674 guest rooms at the Grand Hyatt are accessed via a series of long, wide corridors, and with the smallest having a floor area of 420 sq ft, the king size beds can appear to be rather lost in all the space! Almost half of the rooms overlook the city in the distance, and those overlooking the Creek have a floor area of nigh on 476 sq ft, meaning that they can accommodate an additional bed, as well as the chaise longue, large desk and quilted chairs which come as standard! For security reasons, the towers have no balconies and the large picture windows cannot be opened. As a result, the air conditioning is automatically activated as soon as you leave your room. In terms of decor, the spacious and comfortable surroundings are rather standard (perhaps even a little dull at times), though the Royal Suites are embellished with gold leaf motifs. Having said that, the modern amenities have certainly been carefully chosen and include an adjustable large flat-screen television broadcasting around fifty channels, discrete individual air-conditioning, a minibar with tea and coffee-making facilities, a telephone, cable and wireless Internet connection, etc. The suites even have Bang & Olufsen media equipment. The bathrooms, for their part, are beautifully-designed and have both a bathtub and a shower, as well as two washbasins topped with a large mirror, a small dressing table, a hair-dryer, an illuminated make-up mirror, a very comprehensive selection of hospitality products, bathrobes and slippers, whilst the toilet is separate. Room service is available 24 hours a day and a butler service is available on request.

    Overview 8.70 /10

Built in 2003, the Grand Hyatt is no fewer than 16 floors' worth of impressive magnificence, both inside and out, and the vast, high-ceilinged reception area is certainly no exception. On entering the hotel, you won't believe your eyes, as you take in the imitation jungle, complete with a labyrinth of plants, trees and fountains, as well as an artificial river with a small bridge running across it. Guests can also enjoy live piano music here from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Of the several towers which form the hotel, one is exclusively occupied by the hotel's 186 apartments, whilst another two house the standard rooms. The final tower is home to the convention centre, although guests are welcome to use the very well equipped business centre here. The various swimming pools at the resort are all supervised. The main one, a large, impressive lagoon-pool, incorporates small bridges and artificial rocks and is surrounded by bars, lawned areas, walkways, flowers, palm trees, frangipani trees and various other tree species. Thick-cushioned wooden deckchairs are also provided, though more athletic guests might be more interested in the 1476-ft landscaped running track. The large children's club in the hotel gardens consists of four parts and is sheltered from the rest of the lush green communal area. Depending on their age and interests, your little darlings will have the opportunity to watch films, play on the computers provided or even play games outside, and there is also a large beach-style children's pool for them to enjoy (although there is no sand!). In another area, a large, open house with water jets should give any little daredevils plenty of opportunity to let off steam! The children's club facilities are also open to non-residents who come to dine at the hotel. As far as sports facilities are concerned, there is certainly plenty of choice here, with 4 tennis courts, 2 squash courts and even a large 24-hour gym with all the latest equipment. The latter is incorporated into the large and very stylish spa area, which has separate sections for men and women. With low lighting, soft music and an impeccable blue mosaic jacuzzi, sauna and hammam, you will be thoroughly relaxed by the time you leave. You don't even have to traipse through the rest of the hotel to get here, as there is a lift providing direct access to the spa from the guest rooms. The largest indoor pool in the area (66 ft-long) is also right here, just a few feet away, under a large glass roof.

    Food and drink 8.95 /10

Guests at the Grand Hyatt will be spoilt for choice with no fewer than 14 bars and restaurants across the hotel complex. The Andiamo! is the place to go if you are fond of Italian cuisine, whilst the Awtar offers diners the opportunity to enjoy fine Lebanese cuisine whilst taking in a belly-dancing show. Perhaps the Manhattan Grill (the jewel in the hotel's gastronomic crown) will appeal to you more, or even the Peppercrab, which serves seafood dishes, IZ for a culinary tour of India, Wox if you fancy trying the Vietnamese cuisine, or Sushi for Japanese cuisine. The hotel's main restaurant, the Market Café, is located alongside the lush green garden in the reception. All the kitchens here are open, so you can watch the chefs at work preparing the many international dishes on offer here. The five different counters here notably include Indian, Italian and Middle-Eastern cuisine, served on a self-service basis, so you can help yourself to whatever you fancy before you pay, except at breakfast, when guests can help themselves at no extra cost. Freshness, choice and happy diners are what the Market Café is all about! In a nutshell, guests at the Grand Hyatt can enjoy a buffet for lunch or dinner, or stick to 'à la carte' dishes, such is the variety of choice. Most of the restaurants have transparent partitions so as to enhance the feeling of space and to enable diners to enjoy the imitation forest in the reception. The kitchens are also open, and each restaurant features fairly distinct, carefully-chosen decor, such as the superb tandoor ovens in the comfortable IZ restaurant. Those who are just a little peckish can satisfy their hunger at the Italian delicatessen, or alternatively at the pool bar, and on Fridays, the holy day in the Emirates, families are invited to brunch between 12:00pm and 4:00pm.

    To know

Around 60% of the clientele the hotel attracts is here on business (indeed, the hotel is home to the city's largest hotel-based conference centre, accommodating over 4,000 people) whilst the remaining 40% are holiday-makers. Three floors of the hotel are reserved for smokers.

The service, restaurants, spa, guest rooms and superbly stylish surroundings the hotel offers will undoubtedly leave a permanent impression on you, making this haven of peace and tranquillity the ideal destination for a wonderful honeymoon, unless you can't contemplate a holiday without a beach!

In the way of facilities there is everything one could need although in the way of restaurants, it is probably best to explore what the city has to offer as there isn't much variety here. A smart hotel apartment establishment ideal for guests wanting to be left alone by the staff.

The hotel's rooms are very modern and uncluttered, its common areas are remarkable and its various services are augmented by the more numerous and luxurious ones on offer at the Intercontinental.

Part of the Leading of the World label, the five star Al Bustan is a modern oriental hotel. The mix of various textures, materials and colours employed can be a little on the gaudy side for guests used to more minimalist styles. The atmosphere is relaxed and the restaurants are of a high quality in the food that is served, the service given and the décor of each, especially that of the Blue Elephant, part of the internationally well-known chain. The hotel is ideal for guests needing to be close to the convention centres and although it has a high percentage of business clientele, it is open to leisure guests who are looking for a sound base from which to explore Dubai.

The chic Raffles Hotel is one of the larger more obviously opulent hotels in the city. With its instantly-noticeable pyramid structure and stereotypical Egypt-inspired interiors, the hotel has been a landmark in the area since it was erected in 2007. The hotel is situated close to Bur Dubai, the new town centre, so it isn't too far from the Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa complex. The structure has a shopping centre atmosphere which isn't unpleasant if you want to be left alone by staff to get on with it. Raffles is a great choice if you're here on business, but its facilities are varied enough to cater for families. Raffles is an upmarket hotel, so not ideal if you're on a budget, but great if you need to combine work and play due to its location close to the new centre and adjoined to the WAFI shopping centre. However, Raffles is a hotel where size matters - it will not leave you disappointed by its room sizes, that's for sure!

The staff here is extremely kind and helpful making a stay here enjoyable. The hotel is fairly large whilst staying manageable and the atmosphere is relatively easygoing. The Premier Inn Dubai International Airport is one of three Premier Inn properties in Dubai. The closest to the city centre, it is also extremely practical for early or late flights due to its proximity to the airport. With friendly service and good-value food and beverage outlets, this hotel is ideal for a short stay. It doesn't try to be a holiday hotel, but its other properties may have a livelier atmosphere in comparison. However, as in all Premier Inn hotels, the rooms are basic but clean and functional. The staff is friendly and efficient too, which helps when you've just arrived after a long flight.

The lifestyle Armani Hotel Dubai is nothing short of stunning. With every angle and curve that has been carefully studied to give the desired effect, the hotel is without doubt one of the best in the city, which is a huge statement to make, especially in Dubai, where the standard of hotels is generally very high. Mr Armani has overseen every single detail of this hotel, from the scents used throughout the hotel, to the embossed chocolates sold in the deli on the ground floor. The result is astonishing. What separates the hotel from the rest is firstly, its location, right inside the Burj Khalifa, and second, the sense of space of the hotel. Slick, sophisticated and contemporary, the hotel is a veritable success. The only downfall is that you could be anywhere in the world as there is no reminder of the destination's culture and traditions. The hotel is best-suited to couples and friends looking for the crème de la crème in luxury.

A real gem in its architecture, seeing the legendary hotel, the only seven star hotel in the world, is like seeing the Taj Mahal in India. It is a real architectural feat that should not be dismissed for being too showy, too brash, too contemporary, but rather revered as a symbol of this city that is no less than over the top! The hotel sits quietly glimmering in the sun along a long and wide sandy beach. The interior takes a while to grow on you, but the services and facilities are irreproachable. This is the second Atlantis hotel in the world. Is Atlantis The Palm, the flagship resort on Dubai's first Palm Island, a gem of a hotel or a monster of excess? Actually, it's both of them! It is perhaps the hotel that best represents Dubai, built as it is from scratch between the sea and the desert. A symbol of grandiose delusions, it is nothing less than a 'kingdom of superlatives'. Next to this immense and (in places) kitsch resort with its multitude of ultramodern facilities and restaurants staffed by award-winning chefs, hotel residents and day-trippers alike can enjoy a huge aquatic park.
