Zabeel Saray took us by surprise by its sheer size, but for a luxury family resort of this size, the interior architects have done a great job in making it as opulent as a boutique hotel. Dripping in red and blue glass, velvet upholstered throne-like chairs and a fountain bigger than the average apartment all just in the lobby, gives this hotel a majestic appearance that is hard to rival. The service standards are top-notch and the facilities on offer are as exclusive as in the latest Mondrian in New York. The Jumeirah Hotel Group, has once again, surpassed itself with this latest addition to an already glimmering portfolio. Ideal for a wide-ranging clientele, from families to couples, the resort has something for everyone.

    Location 7.0 /10

The hotel is located right on the exclusive Palm Island on the seafront. There isn't much to do in the immediate surroundings apart from visiting neighbouring hotels such as the Atlantis, the One and Only The Palm and the like. The airport is about 30 minutes away (traffic-depending) and the city centre is approximately 20 minutes away by car. As the resort is isolated, we advise guests to rent a car if they plan on exploring the city and its surroundings.

    Accommodation 9.70 /10

The spacious rooms all have sea views and are kitted out with only the best quality fabrics and materials. The majestic Ottoman influence follows throughout the hotel. The open plan bathrooms are in-keeping with the rest of the room and are stocked with tantalising Asprey products, which we guarantee you'll want to take home with you! However, we found that the cardboard coffee cups part of the complimentary tea and coffee-making facilities were a real shame for a room of this standard. The 405 rooms (and suites) are split into five categories: superior double (40m²), deluxe king (46m²), grand deluxe king (56m²), deluxe family (50-60m²) and grand deluxe family rooms (65-80m²). The hotel also has about 40 luxury suites for something that extra bit special. All rooms have sea views, which amplify the hotel's holiday atmosphere. During our stay the garden were still being planted, but in a year's time the gardens should be looking green and lush, giving the hotel more intimacy.

    Overview 9.70 /10

The hotel is a large luxury resort with typical Moorish architecture and interiors that rival that of a boutique hotel. Upon entering the hotel, its opulent lobby looks like that of a Sheikh's palace, complete with choreographed fountains, crystal chandeliers and beautifully upholstered velvet throne-like seating, all against a backdrop of the Arabian Sea visible through the floor-to-ceiling window to the back of the lobby. The turquoise and ruby coloured glass chandeliers that adorn the lobby along with its carefully crafted marble floors give this hotel the wow-factor. The elaborate decor throughout the hotel may not be to everyone's taste, and some may find it a little on the gaudy side. Here you will also find the lobby lounge, serving refreshments and snacks throughout the day. This huge complex based around one main alley from East to West lined with boutiques, bars and restaurants, has a shopping centre-like atmosphere, but also houses enough facilities to keep guests onsite. In total, the hotel has 11 restaurants and bars - the uber-stylish Voda bar was our favourite and is worth stopping by for pre-dinner drinks even if you are not a guest at the hotel. With its smooth white interiors that glow purple under the strobe lights, everything about this bar breathes contemporary lifestyles; from the furniture design to the cocktails. In true Middle Eastern style, the Zabeel Saray is set to be one of the most beautiful properties in Dubai. At the heart of Jumeirah Zabeel Saray lies the Talise Ottoman Spa, covering 8,000m2 and boasting 42 individual spa rooms and suites, an indoor swimming pool and 3 authentic Turkish Hammams. The only disadvantage for us was its enormous size.

    Food and drink 9.90 /10

Guests are spoilt for choice here with 11 restaurants and bars including: Al Nafoorah, Amala, Laleza, Voi, Imperium, Ixir, Plaj, Sultan's Lounge as far as the restaurant selection goes and Voda, C Club and Mehteran Club to entertain in the evenings. All outlets have been beautifully designed and the food is of a high standard, but with so much capacity most of the outlets lack atmosphere as they are rarely full. But guests are happy to have the choice - although most will explore what the city has to offer rather than spend all their time onsite. Keep in mind that the room rate doesn't include food, and the food here at Zabeel Saray doesn't come cheap, so make sure you have a set budget aside.

    Beach 7.70 /10

The hotel sits right on the beach, which gives it that holiday edge. It doesn't face other buildings or hotels, so it also has an element of privacy and exclusivity. However, the flat manmade beach doesn't feel like the most exotic of beaches, so don't go imagining something from the Indian Ocean! On the upside, guests can rent cabanas along the beach with day beds.

    To know

Zabeel Saray is the latest addition to the Jumeirah Hotels portfolio. A luxury hotel group of beautiful properties, it also runs the infamous Burj al Arab, Al Madinat, the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Jumeirah Emirates Towers and the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel. The group also runs various hotels in Abu Dhabi, London, Frankfurt, New York, the Maldives and Shanghai. There are more hotels in the pipeline so watch this space.

Granted the status of 'Preferred hotels and resorts', this hotel, with its quirky vertical and horizontal layout, is made up of the old and the new making it a rather conspicuous building. The plethora of services and facilities, as well as the beach, are greatly appreciated, but the flashy and kitsch nature of the place quickly becomes irritating. Located in the new marina district, the Habtoor Grand Resort and Spa is particularly ideal for families.

A member of the 'Leading Hotels of the World', the One & Only Royal Mirage 'Residence' is a boutique hotel located at the heart of a vast and beautiful geometric oasis, perfectly suited to couples in search of peaceful surroundings, privacy and sophisticated luxury and ideal for honeymooners, though probably not the best place to stay if you are holidaying as a family.

An impeccable haven of peace and tranquillity. Part of the One and Only Royal Mirage complex of three hotels, the Arabian Court is the more intimate and grown up of the three. It also has more of an authentic Arabian style. The Residence and Spa is smaller and more old fashioned and The Palace has more of a family atmosphere. Arabian Courtyard guests can however use facilities at The Residence and The Palace. Stepping into the hotel is like crossing over into a whole other world filled with jewels, incense and rose petals. The corridors here are silent, the breeze can be heard circulating through open patios lined by immaculate lawns and flowers beds leading all the way to the sea front. For a hideaway, a break away from it all, this is the perfect place to come to if you don't want to be far from the action. The Arabian Court is perfect for couples looking to spend some quality time together, and although the hotel does sell itself as having a 'family focus', we wouldn't recommend the Arabian Court for children due to its serene atmosphere.

Radisson Dubai Marina, not to be confused with Radisson Blu in the Creek area and Radisson Blu Media City, is the most low-key of the three properties. Tucked away in the Dubai Marina area, it is easy to miss as you drive towards the Media City area. Like the other two hotels, it is stylish but is a little more discreet. It comprises of studios which are ideal for groups of friends, families and couples alike wishing to be independent of hotel activities and restaurant opening times. Situated in a quiet area of the city, it is a good base to explore the city from as it is halfway between the sought-after Jumeira beach area and the bustling districts of Dubai. This establishment is of very good quality and value especially for a three star property. It scores high with us and is without a doubt one of our preferred hotel-residences.

Arjaan Rotana Hotel, an apartment hotel, is the tall pink tower with an arabesque arch on the top opposite the One and Only Royal Mirage complex between the Dubai Marina and Jumeirah areas. The hotel is very simple, quiet and basic if not old fashioned with garish-looking furniture in the rooms. The restaurant on the ground floor however, is a pleasant area to spend time in. The highlight of the hotel is its roof-top pool, which is rarely crowded and therefore makes for a relaxing area to sunbathe. Otherwise, a shuttle takes guests to the beach just across the road. The clientele is mainly from the Middle East, so the hotel is therefore a ?dry' hotel, meaning that it does not serve alcohol. The nice thing about the hotel is that its owner has tried to maintain a Moorish architecture which can be assimilated to Islamic culture; guests are therefore reminded of their destination as opposed to staying at a formatted hotel that could be absolutely anywhere in the world. The hotel is ideal for families as it comprises suites with kitchenettes and the rooms are generally spacious.

One of the most elegant hotels in Dubai, where the spirit of the Emirates has been beautifully captivated, One and Only The Palm is a must for anyone with the budget to stay here. Being located on The Palm, it feels fairly isolated from the rest of the city, but this also accentuates its calm and tranquil holiday atmosphere. Everything from the spacious sea-front villas with private pools to the Alleno restaurant is of an extremely high standard and will not leave any guest wanting more. Ideal for a romantic getaway, we wouldn't however recommend this hotel for families due to the lack of facilities for children and the alarmed looks you may get if your children are on the boisterous side!

The lifestyle Armani Hotel Dubai is nothing short of stunning. With every angle and curve that has been carefully studied to give the desired effect, the hotel is without doubt one of the best in the city, which is a huge statement to make, especially in Dubai, where the standard of hotels is generally very high. Mr Armani has overseen every single detail of this hotel, from the scents used throughout the hotel, to the embossed chocolates sold in the deli on the ground floor. The result is astonishing. What separates the hotel from the rest is firstly, its location, right inside the Burj Khalifa, and second, the sense of space of the hotel. Slick, sophisticated and contemporary, the hotel is a veritable success. The only downfall is that you could be anywhere in the world as there is no reminder of the destination's culture and traditions. The hotel is best-suited to couples and friends looking for the crème de la crème in luxury.

The Burj Al Arab appears on the horizon, rises out of the fog along the coastline in Jumeirah, visible from skyscraper terraces all over the city, like a myth seen in books. A real gem in its architecture, seeing the legendary hotel, the only seven star hotel in the world, is like seeing the Taj Mahal in India. It is a real architectural feat that should not be dismissed for being too showy, too brash, too contemporary, but rather revered as a symbol of this city that is no less than over the top! The hotel sits quietly glimmering in the sun along a long and wide sandy beach. The interior takes a while to grow on you, but the services and facilities are irreproachable. It's definitely worth a stay at least for a night, or if it is too pricy for your budget then do drop by for tea, but book early.

This is the second Atlantis hotel in the world. Is Atlantis The Palm, the flagship resort on Dubai's first Palm Island, a gem of a hotel or a monster of excess? Actually, it's both of them! It is perhaps the hotel that best represents Dubai, built as it is from scratch between the sea and the desert. A symbol of grandiose delusions, it is nothing less than a 'kingdom of superlatives'. Next to this immense and (in places) kitsch resort with its multitude of ultramodern facilities and restaurants staffed by award-winning chefs, hotel residents and day-trippers alike can enjoy a huge aquatic park. It is like a city within a city, making it ideal for families, but if you are looking for charm and intimacy, you're probably better off elsewhere!
