AL BARSHA Dubai, United Arab Emirates -

Amy Adejokun Section editor

With a contemporary, luxurious and a bit uncluttered style, it has an original location at the entrance of the commercial district, which also houses the skiing center of the Middle East, Ski Dubai. This hotel is more convenient for a shopping and discovering the city than it is for enjoying the seaside. Families should know: everybody will appreciate down-hill sledding or snow ringo, two activities offered at Ski Dubai.

    Location 5.0 /10

On Sheikh Zayed Road, at one end of the commecial center "Mall of the Emirates". The traditional quarter of Dubaï (Deira) and the airport are 15.5 miles away. Allow 30 minutes for transfer.

    Accommodation 9.20 /10

The 395 rooms of the Kempinski are divided into two categories: standard rooms ( "deluxe") and the chalets (15 in all). These chalets are unusual in Dubaï - when they are duplex style, they have a view of the Ski Dubaï on one side and Jumeirah and the Gulf on the other. All rooms are adequate for families - there is a convertible sofa in addition to the double bed. On the upper floors ( 6th floor and up), the Gulf view becomes better and the construction areas, buildings and express way less noticeable. There is no balcony, don't worry about the noise : the rooms are well insulated. All facilities offering comfortable surroundings and discrete luxury. The magnificent bathrooms are of light colored marble. They have a bathtub and a shower stall. Toilets are separate. Hair -dryier. Nice selection of Kempinski branded products. Television with plasma screen (40 channels), direct telephone, minibar, tea /coffee preparation kit: all in a modest environment with contemporary lines.

    Overview 8.70 /10

Opened in April 2006, the Kempinski Mall of the Emirates is located in a 17-storey neo-Arabic style building. Located on Sheikh Zayed Road, the hotel is easily identified by a huge covered slide on the back side : this is one of the Ski Dubaï slopes, the station integrated into the Mall of the Emirates. There is a direct access from the hotel (through the lobby) and the slopes are visible when you are seated at the Sezzam restaurant or if you stay at one the "chalet " rooms. The decoration of the lobby is well-designed, tasteful (light colors) and relaxing (a waterfall and a pool). There are many kinds of marble in the decoration (imported from Spain and Italy). The furniture, fabrics and lamps are imported from Singapore. The swimming pool in the middle of a sundeck has a view of the Gulf and a classy district of Jumeirah, and also of an interchange of express roads crossing the city. The pool is greater for swimming in the morning or at the and of the day than for relaxing : there is no green lawn, only flagged surfaces (very well laid out and equipped with all the essentials needed for relaxation).

    Food and drink 9.20 /10

With 3 restaurants and 3 bars, the Kempinski depends on quality rather than on quantity (in Dubaï, ten restaurants in a hotel is very common). The buffets that serve three types of cuisine are open 24/7 - verrines, home-made food, fruit juices and fresh vegetables..... You will imagine that you are in a luxurious restaurant in Paris. The service is very personal here, you may even ask to get a garnished plate at your table. The lounge leads on to the swimming pool's sundeck ( dine in the fresh air when the weather is cooler). Other selection: the Sezzam or 3 restaurants in one large lounge with a view of Ski Dubai. You can find baked food in the "Bake" section, grilled foods in the "Flame" section  and fusion cuisine in the "Steam" section. This restaurant is open to outside customers as well, so it may be crowded on week-ends and during Dubai festivals.

    To know

Choose this hotel for skiing ! Its restaurant and its chalet-rooms have a direct view on the Ski Dubaï grounds.
The closest beach is Jumeirah beach (3 miles away), but this hotel doesn't have a private area on the beach. Bring your own beach supplies - you need to take a cab to get there.
More interesting but farther is the Kempinski Ajman beach ( in an Emirate of the same name). It ?s about an hour's drive by hotel shuttle. There are opportunities to take a mini-excursion to the well-appointed Kempinski Ajman beach.

    Advice for guests

It's advisable to ask when booking your room (for an extra charge) : for one of the 15 chalets, facing the Ski Dubaï ski facilities, or even better, the two-storey chalets that have a view of Jumeirah and the Gulf.
If not available ,  ask for a "deluxe" room : 34 m² in area, the rooms are   ; sufficient for a couple, however there is no balcony.

The Burj Al Arab appears on the horizon, rises out of the fog along the coastline in Jumeirah, visible from skyscraper terraces all over the city, like a myth seen in books. A real gem in its architecture, seeing the legendary hotel, the only seven star hotel in the world, is like seeing the Taj Mahal in India. It is a real architectural feat that should not be dismissed for being too showy, too brash, too contemporary, but rather revered as a symbol of this city that is no less than over the top! The hotel sits quietly glimmering in the sun along a long and wide sandy beach. The interior takes a while to grow on you, but the services and facilities are irreproachable. It's definitely worth a stay at least for a night, or if it is too pricy for your budget then do drop by for tea, but book early.

With great service and its simple restful Thai-inspired decor, the Dusit Thani has great views of the city's new business district and its rooms have lovely no-fuss open-plan bathrooms with lit aromatherapy candles to welcome you. The hotel also has a good range of quality restaurants including the sumptuously-designed best Thai restaurant in Dubai which will take you all the way to Thailand's mesmerising royal palaces and back.

Al Madinat by the luxury hotel chain, Jumeirah, which also opened the renowned Burj al Arab, is without a doubt one of the best resorts in Dubai. Set on a man-made lake, guests can get around by abra (small traditional wooden boat) which makes a change from Dubai's busy roads. Al Madinat is a village in its own right; guests won't want to leave! With beautifully decorated rooms, a pleasant outdoor pool, gardens to get lost in, a huge spa, over 45 food and beverage outlets and one of the best beaches in the city, the resort is definitely in our top three. Although some may find the décor a little gaudy, especially upon arrival, the resort is a quality one and definitely worth the extra spend. The atmosphere is relaxed and Al Madinat offers something for everyone, from a fun kids' club to a beautiful spa. Al Madinat, meaning 'city' in Arabic, offers a good balance between intimacy and social events making the resort ideal for couples as well as families and groups of friends. Even the likes of George Clooney and Sharon Stone have graced the resort with their presence!

One of our favourite hotels in Dubai, the Pullman Emirates Mall has a great location just behind one of Dubai's most popular shopping centres and halfway between the city centre and the main beach area. The hotel itself has a couple of roof-top pools overlooking the emirate for miles out. The restaurants are top notch, as are the spacious rooms. A great all-rounder for couples and families, the Pullman is in our top 10.

The three-star Citymax al Barsha hotel is one of two hotels of the same chain in Dubai. It is also one of the few truly budget hotels in the emirate, which is a great option for travellers on a budget. The hotel is good-value without being cheap and nasty. Guests here can be sure that the rooms will be clean and that service will be friendly at all times. Located in the al Barsha area just behind the popular Mall of the Emirates (where you will find Dubai's ski dome), the hotel is also near an area that has a relaxed local feel, which isn't a given in Dubai! Most hotels tend to feel like they are in the middle of nowhere due to development happening in stages. The hotel is ideal for large groups and for families on a budget, or travellers wanting to hold on to their money in order to be able to splurge on shopping instead of accommodation.

The lifestyle Armani Hotel Dubai is nothing short of stunning. With every angle and curve that has been carefully studied to give the desired effect, the hotel is without doubt one of the best in the city, which is a huge statement to make, especially in Dubai, where the standard of hotels is generally very high. Mr Armani has overseen every single detail of this hotel, from the scents used throughout the hotel, to the embossed chocolates sold in the deli on the ground floor. The result is astonishing. What separates the hotel from the rest is firstly, its location, right inside the Burj Khalifa, and second, the sense of space of the hotel. Slick, sophisticated and contemporary, the hotel is a veritable success. The only downfall is that you could be anywhere in the world as there is no reminder of the destination's culture and traditions. The hotel is best-suited to couples and friends looking for the crème de la crème in luxury.

This is the second Atlantis hotel in the world. Is Atlantis The Palm, the flagship resort on Dubai's first Palm Island, a gem of a hotel or a monster of excess? Actually, it's both of them! It is perhaps the hotel that best represents Dubai, built as it is from scratch between the sea and the desert. A symbol of grandiose delusions, it is nothing less than a 'kingdom of superlatives'. Next to this immense and (in places) kitsch resort with its multitude of ultramodern facilities and restaurants staffed by award-winning chefs, hotel residents and day-trippers alike can enjoy a huge aquatic park. It is like a city within a city, making it ideal for families, but if you are looking for charm and intimacy, you're probably better off elsewhere!
