Hotel One and Only The Palm Hotel 5 star
The Palm, Dubai Dubai, United Arab Emirates -

Amy Adejokun Section editor

One of the most elegant hotels in Dubai, where the spirit of the Emirates has been beautifully captivated, One and Only The Palm is a must for anyone with the budget to stay here. Being located on The Palm, it feels fairly isolated from the rest of the city, but this also accentuates its calm and tranquil holiday atmosphere. Everything from the spacious sea-front villas with private pools to the Alleno restaurant is of an extremely high standard and will not leave any guest wanting more. Ideal for a romantic getaway, we wouldn't however recommend this hotel for families due to the lack of facilities for children and the alarmed looks you may get if your children are on the boisterous side!

    Location 7.0 /10

The hotel, one of four under the One and Only umbrella in Dubai, is located right on the beach on the exclusive Palm Island. The Palm is somewhat isolated so make sure you either rent a car if you plan on exploring the area. The airport is about 30 minutes away by car (depending on traffic) and the city-centre is about 20 minutes away. There is nothing to do in the immediate surroundings apart from visiting neighbouring hotels like The Atlantis (which also has a large waterpark) Jumeirah's Zabeel Saray, the Kempinski among others.

    Accommodation 9.90 /10

The residential environment really emphasis the home away from home concept, except that no matter what your home looks like, you can be sure that The Palm's rooms will outdo any home in terms of luxury. Guests have the choice between the Mansion House, a tri-level villa, the Palm Beach Mansions and Beach Front Villas, all of which are absolutely stunning. Dressed in lavish fabrics, the interiors are painted in fresh whites and off-whites fiving the rooms a clean and soothing atmosphere. The Manor House, located at the heart of the resort, has 32 Premiere rooms (65m²), 2 Executive suites (130m²), and one Grand Palm suite (250m²). The decor here is a cross between Moorish and Andalusian influences. The Palm Beach Mansions come in various shapes and sizes - Palm Beach Premiere (65m²), Palm Beach Junior Suite (100m²) and Palm Beach Executive Suites (130mé), some of which have their own private pools (20m²) looking out onto the sea. All are overseen by a team of private butlers. For guests looking to have the ultimate luxury experience, the hotel has four 325m² two-bedroom beachfront villas. And let us tell you, it doesn't really get much better than this in Dubai! Every tiny detail is taken care of by a team of highly trained professionals, so even the fussiest and hardest guest to please won't have a thing to say about the seamless experience.

It is unnecessary to go into details of the room amenities as you can be sure that whatever you want here, you get. Pure opulence and elegance denote what The Palm accommodation is about and anyone who chooses this hotel will not be disappointed.

    Overview 9.90 /10

Open in 2012, The Palm is one of our favourite hotels despite its daunting atmosphere upon entering its pure white lobby adorned with pearl mosaics, a theme that runs throughout the hotel, giving a new edge to luxury in the city. In terms of facilities onsite, there is more than enough to choose from. The beautiful pool lined by two rows of palm trees on either side makes for an impactful sight upon arrival. There are four restaurants of an extremely high standard: Zest, the more casual outlet of the four, along with the Lounge, Stay is the hotel's fine dining restaurant - our favourite however was 101, that sits on the water across a jetty from the beach. All the restaurants are overseen by world renowned Michelin starred chef, Yannick Alleno. This alone sets the scene for one of the most exclusive atmospheres you will find at a hotel in Dubai. The hotel is ideal for guests who want to have a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in a private and highly secure environment. For guests for whom pampering is a must there is a couple suite VIP spa under the expertise of ESPA along with 8 other treatment suites. The spa is set among one of the most relaxing settings complete with fountains, courtyards and ponds. We recommend that you book your spa treatment as much in advance as possible, especially during high season (summer and Christmas holidays).

    Food and drink 9.90 /10

In terms of food and drink, guests won't be left wanting more with the hotel's four exclusive restaurants, all overseen by Michelin starred chef, Yannick Alleno. Although all four restaurants offer a standard that is hard to rival, they are all very different in terms of the cuisine and atmosphere. The Lounge is the first outlet you will come to; located in the lobby area, this area is often used for meetings. The Lounge serves refreshments and snacks throughout the day and is open until 1:00am daily. Zest, is where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served. The cuisine is inspired mainly by the Middle East, Asia as well as the West. Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows create a decidedly elegant and inviting ambience in ZEST. Silver leaf and cut-quartz crystal will accent flourishes of Arabian design. An elegant and light ambience and generous seating make it an ideal choice for dining with friends and family. Outdoor seating, overlooking the grand pool and Moorish inspired gardens is also available. 101 was our favourite restaurant of the four, simply because of its wonderful location, right over the water. With its floor-to-ceiling windows, the surrounding sea views dress the bar from sunrise to sunset, giving it a different aspect as the sun moves from east to west. The atmosphere here is livelier than at the other restaurants and there is a DJ on most nights. The food served here is mainly Mediterranean, and it is open for lunch and dinner. The signature restaurant, Stay, is the pride and joy of the hotel and it isn't hard to see why.

Open for dinner only, STAY by Yannick Alléno provides distinct dining experience within a comfortable yet stylish environment. STAY surprises guests with signature dishes showcasing traditional cooking methods reinterpreted in contemporary fashion. Different seating arrangements including a sharing table area as well as a unique Pastry Library concept are key to the restaurant's DNA. They provide an element of surprise, inviting guests to discover simple, great tasting food and unique sharing experiences while high timber walls and vaulted ceilings with black crystal chandeliers produce an atmosphere of refined elegance for romance and special occasions. Note that STAY closed on Mondays and reservations are required during peak season.

Guests should note that shorts and overly-revealing clothing should not be worn at any of the resort's restaurants for either men or women.

    Beach 6.70 /10

The hotel sits right on the beach, which gives it that holiday edge. It doesn't face other buildings or hotels, so it also has an element of privacy and exclusivity. However, the flat manmade beach doesn't feel like the most exotic of beaches, so don't go imagining something from the Indian Ocean! On the upside, guests can rent cabanas along the beach with day beds.

    To know

The Palm is one of four One and Only hotels in Dubai. The other three are located with the Royal Mirage complex close to the Jumeirah area. Hotel guests can take a speed boat shuttle to the complex should they want a little more life and choice of facilities. Although we wouldn't recommend staying here with children, there is a complimentary children's program for kids aged 4 to 11.

Zabeel Saray took us by surprise by its sheer size, but for a luxury family resort of this size, the interior architects have done a great job in making it as opulent as a boutique hotel. Dripping in red and blue glass, velvet upholstered throne-like chairs and a fountain bigger than the average apartment all just in the lobby, gives this hotel a majestic appearance that is hard to rival. The service standards are top-notch and the facilities on offer are as exclusive as in the latest Mondrian in New York. The Jumeirah Hotel Group, has once again, surpassed itself with this latest addition to an already glimmering portfolio. Ideal for a wide-ranging clientele, from families to couples, the resort has something for everyone.

A member of the 'Leading Hotels of the World', the One & Only Royal Mirage 'Residence' is a boutique hotel located at the heart of a vast and beautiful geometric oasis, perfectly suited to couples in search of peaceful surroundings, privacy and sophisticated luxury and ideal for honeymooners, though probably not the best place to stay if you are holidaying as a family.

Arjaan Rotana Hotel, an apartment hotel, is the tall pink tower with an arabesque arch on the top opposite the One and Only Royal Mirage complex between the Dubai Marina and Jumeirah areas. The hotel is very simple, quiet and basic if not old fashioned with garish-looking furniture in the rooms. The restaurant on the ground floor however, is a pleasant area to spend time in. The highlight of the hotel is its roof-top pool, which is rarely crowded and therefore makes for a relaxing area to sunbathe. Otherwise, a shuttle takes guests to the beach just across the road. The clientele is mainly from the Middle East, so the hotel is therefore a ?dry' hotel, meaning that it does not serve alcohol. The nice thing about the hotel is that its owner has tried to maintain a Moorish architecture which can be assimilated to Islamic culture; guests are therefore reminded of their destination as opposed to staying at a formatted hotel that could be absolutely anywhere in the world. The hotel is ideal for families as it comprises suites with kitchenettes and the rooms are generally spacious.

An impeccable haven of peace and tranquillity. Part of the One and Only Royal Mirage complex of three hotels, the Arabian Court is the more intimate and grown up of the three. It also has more of an authentic Arabian style. The Residence and Spa is smaller and more old fashioned and The Palace has more of a family atmosphere. Arabian Courtyard guests can however use facilities at The Residence and The Palace. Stepping into the hotel is like crossing over into a whole other world filled with jewels, incense and rose petals. The corridors here are silent, the breeze can be heard circulating through open patios lined by immaculate lawns and flowers beds leading all the way to the sea front. For a hideaway, a break away from it all, this is the perfect place to come to if you don't want to be far from the action. The Arabian Court is perfect for couples looking to spend some quality time together, and although the hotel does sell itself as having a 'family focus', we wouldn't recommend the Arabian Court for children due to its serene atmosphere.

Radisson Dubai Marina, not to be confused with Radisson Blu in the Creek area and Radisson Blu Media City, is the most low-key of the three properties. Tucked away in the Dubai Marina area, it is easy to miss as you drive towards the Media City area. Like the other two hotels, it is stylish but is a little more discreet. It comprises of studios which are ideal for groups of friends, families and couples alike wishing to be independent of hotel activities and restaurant opening times. Situated in a quiet area of the city, it is a good base to explore the city from as it is halfway between the sought-after Jumeira beach area and the bustling districts of Dubai. This establishment is of very good quality and value especially for a three star property. It scores high with us and is without a doubt one of our preferred hotel-residences.

Although the Radisson Blu, Media City Hotel is not located at the heart of Dubai activity, the area is extremely pleasant, relaxing, and it is only a short drive away from Jumeirah beach life. Due to its stylish décor and friendly staff, this hotel is on our favourites list! The facilities are numerous and varied, including the two sun terraces with a pool each and the stylish bars on offer. The rooms are very cosy, bright and cheerful, setting the décor apart from the rest - the bright stripy carpets make a change from the usual neutral earthy tones so often found in Dubai hotel rooms. Fresh and modern, the Radisson Blu Media City Hotel is ideal for a range of clientele, from business to families, to groups of friends to couples all looking for a quiet base to explore the busier parts of Dubai from.

The lifestyle Armani Hotel Dubai is nothing short of stunning. With every angle and curve that has been carefully studied to give the desired effect, the hotel is without doubt one of the best in the city, which is a huge statement to make, especially in Dubai, where the standard of hotels is generally very high. Mr Armani has overseen every single detail of this hotel, from the scents used throughout the hotel, to the embossed chocolates sold in the deli on the ground floor. The result is astonishing. What separates the hotel from the rest is firstly, its location, right inside the Burj Khalifa, and second, the sense of space of the hotel. Slick, sophisticated and contemporary, the hotel is a veritable success. The only downfall is that you could be anywhere in the world as there is no reminder of the destination's culture and traditions. The hotel is best-suited to couples and friends looking for the crème de la crème in luxury.

The Burj Al Arab appears on the horizon, rises out of the fog along the coastline in Jumeirah, visible from skyscraper terraces all over the city, like a myth seen in books. A real gem in its architecture, seeing the legendary hotel, the only seven star hotel in the world, is like seeing the Taj Mahal in India. It is a real architectural feat that should not be dismissed for being too showy, too brash, too contemporary, but rather revered as a symbol of this city that is no less than over the top! The hotel sits quietly glimmering in the sun along a long and wide sandy beach. The interior takes a while to grow on you, but the services and facilities are irreproachable. This is the second Atlantis hotel in the world. Is Atlantis The Palm, the flagship resort on Dubai's first Palm Island, a gem of a hotel or a monster of excess? Actually, it's both of them! It is perhaps the hotel that best represents Dubai, built as it is from scratch between the sea and the desert. A symbol of grandiose delusions, it is nothing less than a 'kingdom of superlatives'. Next to this immense and (in places) kitsch resort with its multitude of ultramodern facilities and restaurants staffed by award-winning chefs, hotel residents and day-trippers alike can enjoy a huge aquatic park. It is like a city within a city, making it ideal for families, but if you are looking for charm and intimacy, you're probably better off elsewhere!
