The Premier Inn Dubai International Airport is one of three Premier Inn properties in Dubai. The closest to the city centre, it is also extremely practical for early or late flights due to its proximity to the airport. With friendly service and good-value food and beverage outlets, this hotel is ideal for a short stay. It doesn't try to be a holiday hotel, but its other properties may have a livelier atmosphere in comparison. However, as in all Premier Inn hotels, the rooms are basic but clean and functional. The staff is friendly and efficient too, which helps when you've just arrived after a long flight.

    Location 6.0 /10

The hotel is right on the main motorway leading to the airport in a small residential pocket without much else in the immediate surroundings. The city centre is about 20 minutes away by car. The airport is 5 minutes away and the hotel provides complimentary transport to and from the airport.

    Accommodation 5.70 /10

There are 281 rooms split in two categories: family rooms and standards. The room size is about 24m² on average, which is small for a city like Dubai, but is plentiful if using the room as a base to explore the city from. Each room can sleep a family of four, although we wouldn't recommend it unless you like it cosy! Some rooms have a sofa bed - enquire at the time of booking. All rooms have a bathtub, which is rare for budget hotels with rooms of this size. If you like your toiletries bring your own as the bathrooms here only have dispensers of 'Lux' shower gel attached to the walls. Guests have a choice of twin or queen size beds. The rooms are sparsely equipped, but they do have large flat-screen televisions, complimentary tea and coffee-making facilities, hairdryers and desks. All rooms have white walls, purple short-hair fireproof carpets and a purple headboard. All rooms have a print of a purple flower in a frame to add a little touch of warmth to an otherwise comfortable but bland room.

    Overview 6.70 /10

The hotel, which opened in 2010, is located in a residential pocket just across the motorway to the airport, which is handy if you have a very early or late flight. The hotel itself is extremely simple and homogenous to the Premier Inn brand with its white walls and signature purple carpets. There is a small terrace outside the lobby area where guests are welcome to have a seat (it's become a bit of a smokers' corner). Inside, to the left is a small Costa coffee shop serving hot drinks, juices and pastries - it is open 24 hours. Opposite the reception is the hotel restaurant, which although basic, is practical if you don't feel like venturing out into town to find a quick bite to eat. Wireless internet access is included in the room rate. The hotel also has a small pool, which is a first for the chain, as well as covered terrace with a pool table, where guests like to hang out to relax after a day of meetings or sightseeing. The nice thing about this terrace is that as there are no neighbouring buildings, nothing casts shadows on the area surrounding the pool, meaning that daylight hours can be maximised for sunbathing! Guests also have access to the small car park out front and there is no charge for using it. The signature purple that runs through all of the chain's hotels was agreed upon after a study was carried out and found that purple is actually the most relaxing and calming of colours. We like the Premier Inn purple, but we'll leave it up to you to decide if it makes you feel awash with tranquillity when you walk through the corridors. Guests also have free access to computers in the lobby, which are connected to the internet.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

The diner-style restaurant, the 'Bedouin Bistro', is open from 6:00am to 10:30am for breakfast, from 12:00pm to 3:00pm for lunch and from 6:00pm to 10:30pm for dinner. A buffet is served at every meal when the hotel runs on high occupancy, but otherwise guests have a choice from the menu. As well as the restaurant, which serves a range of international food from pizza and pasta to curry, there is a 24-hour Costa coffee shop in the lobby with a small seating area. The Retreat bar is also open to guests for a drink or two. Nothing fancy, the bar, like the rest of the hotel, is functional but the hotel often organises events like quizzes and theme nights.

The Rimal Rotana is part of the Emirati Rotana chain which has numerous properties all over the city. Rotanas are known for their modern aluminium and glass structures and are a good option for families as the rooms tend to be fairly spacious. Here, the ground floor is particularly contemporary all done up in white with the latest designer furniture, giving the hotel a fresh and modern feel. The Rimal is ideal for families or groups of friends. It is also fairly well-located just a short distance from the airport and from Deira, close to the Creek. The surrounding area is fairly pleasant with shops and local restaurants on the main road.

Located alongside the Creek and at the heart of Dubai's famous golf club, the Park Hyatt offers superb facilities, its white buildings reflecting the style of an old Arabian palace topped with magnificent turquoise domes. The service, restaurants, spa, guest rooms and superbly stylish surroundings the hotel offers will undoubtedly leave a permanent impression on you, making this haven of peace and tranquillity the ideal destination for a wonderful honeymoon, unless you can't contemplate a holiday without a beach!

The Grand Hyatt is housed in a huge glass building incorporating several towers, with one of the largest leisure complexes belonging to a Dubai hotel at its feet. Families are extremely well catered for here, as there really is something for everyone; with its many upmarket services, impeccable gardens, various restaurants and swimming pools and a superb spa, you hardly need to leave the resort, unless, perhaps, you fancy spending some time on the beach. Workshops are also organised for small children and there is a children's club for under 4's accompanied by an adult.

In-keeping with the Rotana chain's contemporary glass and aluminium structures, the Rihab Rotana hotel apartments is also modern and kitted out for groups or families wishing to rent out a serviced apartment for the duration of their stay. In the way of facilities there is everything one could need although in the way of restaurants, it is probably best to explore what the city has to offer as there isn't much variety here. A smart hotel apartment establishment ideal for guests wanting to be left alone by the staff.

It is ideal for business trips, but tourists will also have a good holiday here thanks to the immense Festival City nearby. The hotel's rooms are very modern and uncluttered, its common areas are remarkable and its various services are augmented by the more numerous and luxurious ones on offer at the Intercontinental.

Part of the Leading of the World label, the five star Al Bustan is a modern oriental hotel. The mix of various textures, materials and colours employed can be a little on the gaudy side for guests used to more minimalist styles. The atmosphere is relaxed and the restaurants are of a high quality in the food that is served, the service given and the décor of each, especially that of the Blue Elephant, part of the internationally well-known chain. The hotel is ideal for guests needing to be close to the convention centres and although it has a high percentage of business clientele, it is open to leisure guests who are looking for a sound base from which to explore Dubai.

The chic Raffles Hotel is one of the larger more obviously opulent hotels in the city. With its instantly-noticeable pyramid structure and stereotypical Egypt-inspired interiors, the hotel has been a landmark in the area since it was erected in 2007. The hotel is situated close to Bur Dubai, the new town centre, so it isn't too far from the Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa complex. The structure has a shopping centre atmosphere which isn't unpleasant if you want to be left alone by staff to get on with it. Raffles is a great choice if you're here on business, but its facilities are varied enough to cater for families. Raffles is an upmarket hotel, so not ideal if you're on a budget, but great if you need to combine work and play due to its location close to the new centre and adjoined to the WAFI shopping centre. However, Raffles is a hotel where size matters - it will not leave you disappointed by its room sizes, that's for sure!

The lifestyle Armani Hotel Dubai is nothing short of stunning. With every angle and curve that has been carefully studied to give the desired effect, the hotel is without doubt one of the best in the city, which is a huge statement to make, especially in Dubai, where the standard of hotels is generally very high. Mr Armani has overseen every single detail of this hotel, from the scents used throughout the hotel, to the embossed chocolates sold in the deli on the ground floor. The result is astonishing. What separates the hotel from the rest is firstly, its location, right inside the Burj Khalifa, and second, the sense of space of the hotel. Slick, sophisticated and contemporary, the hotel is a veritable success. The only downfall is that you could be anywhere in the world as there is no reminder of the destination's culture and traditions. The hotel is best-suited to couples and friends looking for the crème de la crème in luxury.

The Burj Al Arab appears on the horizon, rises out of the fog along the coastline in Jumeirah, visible from skyscraper terraces all over the city, like a myth seen in books. A real gem in its architecture, seeing the legendary hotel, the only seven star hotel in the world, is like seeing the Taj Mahal in India. It is a real architectural feat that should not be dismissed for being too showy, too brash, too contemporary, but rather revered as a symbol of this city that is no less than over the top! The hotel sits quietly glimmering in the sun along a long and wide sandy beach. The interior takes a while to grow on you, but the services and facilities are irreproachable. It's definitely worth a stay at least for a night, or if it is too pricy for your budget then do drop by for tea, but book early.

This is the second Atlantis hotel in the world. Is Atlantis The Palm, the flagship resort on Dubai's first Palm Island, a gem of a hotel or a monster of excess? Actually, it's both of them! It is perhaps the hotel that best represents Dubai, built as it is from scratch between the sea and the desert. A symbol of grandiose delusions, it is nothing less than a 'kingdom of superlatives'. Next to this immense and (in places) kitsch resort with its multitude of ultramodern facilities and restaurants staffed by award-winning chefs, hotel residents and day-trippers alike can enjoy a huge aquatic park. It is like a city within a city, making it ideal for families, but if you are looking for charm and intimacy, you're probably better off elsewhere!
