Amy Adejokun Section editor

Fairly well-located, in Deira, close to the Creek, the Sheraton Deira sits on its own on Al Mateena Road; one of the rare streets lined with palm trees, pavements, shops and local restaurants. Although not busy, there is a very local feel around the area, which gives the hotel an extra calm atmosphere. A smallish four star property, the Sheraton Deira is ideal for visitors looking to stay at a hotel within a chain they recognise. The rooms are comfortable but there isn't much else is terms of entertainment or restaurants. Not ideal for a family, not a luxury hotel, so best-suited to short-term visitors with an average budget looking for a no-frills, no fuss hotel.

    Location 5.5 /10

In the town centre, on Al Mateena Street, 3 miles from the airport, this takes about 20 minutes. Streets like Al Mateena are very rare in the city - very calm, quiet and with a strong local atmosphere; we found the area very pleasant. The hotel stands alone across the road from a range of shops and local restaurants. This area is mainly surrounded by residences for hotel personnel.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

With its 224 rooms, the Sheraton Deira should be classed as a large hotel but actually feels fairly small and intimate; furthermore, although the hotel was not full at the time of our visit, it is a little hard to imagine the hotel facilities being able to cater for twice as many guests. The rooms are not all decorated the same - some are more contemporary than others. The suites have been renovated recently and have a large stylish marble bathroom with chequered floors and aluminium sinks and free-standing bath; after seeing this bathroom guests will want to spend all their time here. The rooms are very cosy and really do feel like home. The wooden floors and large windows help keep the room light and bright. The non-renovated rooms are a little les contemporary, with carpets and more neutral tones. The style in these rooms is less distinguished. The amenities include air conditioning, a minibar, an international direct telephone line, and satellite television. Some rooms have a good view of Sheikh Zayed Road lined by its emblematic skyscrapers in the distance - this should be requested upon booking.

    Overview 7.45 /10

The Sheraton Deira occupies a 6 storey modern building with an aluminium façade and blue tinted windows. The lobby, to the right of the entrance, is a little dull due to the grey tones used everywhere and dark woods. The style could be a little more contemporary. The reception staff just about managed a smile. The reception area runs into the hotel coffee shop which resembles a television set for the Bold and the Beautiful and the like with its dark blue walls, strategically placed coffee tables with lamps and velvet soft furnishings help to recreate that all-American 90s atmosphere. The staff here is very pleasant. Next door, and as you walk in through the hotel entrance, visitors will notice one of the hotel's three restaurants, the main restaurant, decorated to resemble an Italian courtyard complete with plants and salmon-coloured walls. The tables are arranged in the middle of this courtyard which although brings the outdoors indoors, has a roof and therefore echoes, so it can get a little noisy at meal times.

To the left of the entrance are th elevators going up to the rooms which are fairly comfortable and spacious.

Right up on the roof, there is a lovely pool with relatively long sunshine hours in the afternoon.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

The main restaurant, The Terrace, is located opposite the hotel entrance. It is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The room is bright and equipped with small tables covered with white tablecloths and rattan chairs. Breakfast is served buffet-style. It offers a great choice of cereals with fresh fruits, pastries, an assortment of breads and different cakes.

There is also a bar, Lindbergh's Bar, on the 4th floor which has some lovely views of the city centre from a distance. Open 6:00pm-2:45am.

The hotel has since closed its nightclub due to complaints about the noise, and has since opened an Iranian restaurant which is managed independently of the Sheraton brand, where guests can expect some live music in the evenings.

    To know

The hotel originally opened as an Excelsior in 1990 but was then taken over by Sheraton in the late 90s. Not to be confused with Sheraton's second property along the beach.

Located in the town centre, close to the Hamarain Centre, the Sheraton Deira is well located to explore Dubaï, go shopping or visit the surrounding areas. For those who want to go to the beach, a shuttle to the Sheraton Jumeirah runs 3 times a day. Expect a transfer of 30 min. The shuttle is free, but access to the beach is not (£6 per person). This fee allows you to use all Sheraton Jumeirah facilities.

The hotel is equipped with a small mixed gym and separate steam and sauna rooms (for men and women).

For a seaside vacation under the eternal sun of Dubaï, the Royal Méridien is an excellent choice. It enjoys a pleasant location on Jumeirah beach, its rooms are large and comfortable and its buffets are excellent!

Despite the Sofitel's bland image, it is one of our favourite hotels in the city due to its all-round good-value and location. A French brand, the company has ensured that no matter where you are, there are French touches in the service and in the facilities, which distinguishes it from the rest. One thing's for sure is that if you like your baguettes, this is the place to stay! Ideally located in the up and coming trendy JBR (Jumeirah Beach Resort) district, the hotel sits just across the street from the beach and a couple minutes' walk from the main outdoor boardwalk of cafés and restaurants. The food is so good at the Sofitel that you probably won't want to leave the hotel anyway! Perfect for a range of clientele from business to groups, families and couples, the Sofitel remains in our top ten for quality.

British by name, but Irish-owned, the first thing that springs to mind is the Bonnington's impressive display of wall o wall, floor to ceiling, book-match marble! Heavy and cold, the lines and materials, are too masculine to be defined as quintessentially British. The hotel's name is as British as it gets as the decor in public areas have a more contemporary Middle-Eastern feel, whereas the rooms look like a cross between the latter and Swedish design.

The Address Dubai Marina, not to be confused with the other Address hotels in Dubai, is located halfway between the city centre, Bur Dubai, and the up and coming 'JBR' (Jumeirah Beach Resort) area, which is handy if you are going to be zooming between the two during your stay. True to The Address style, this hotel has beautiful interiors, comfortable rooms and good service, however, it lacks atmosphere due to its shopping centre aspect. The breakfast here is one of the highlights, as is the beautiful freeform roof-top pool, which is one of the largest in the city. The hotel is ideal for a range of guests, from groups of friends to families and couples.

The Movenpick Jumeirah Beach Hotel is the perfect all-rounder if you're going to be spending a holiday in Dubai. Situated in the up and coming Jumeirah Beach area, it is in a prime location right across the street from the main beach. A five star hotel with excellent standards and a good general holiday atmosphere, it is a great place to choose whether in a group of friends, as a family or as a couple. However, compared to other hotels in the city, the hotel lacks a stronger luxury aspect to be a five star, which is why it has been awarded four stars by our reviewing journalist, The highlight of the hotel is its wonderful pool deck, which overlooks the sea.

The main thing to bear in mind about the Ramada Plaza is its large range of services thanks to its guest room-apartments. What's more, the hotel is located in a residential area with all the amenities you will need and close to one of the few public beaches in the Emirates.

The lifestyle Armani Hotel Dubai is nothing short of stunning. With every angle and curve that has been carefully studied to give the desired effect, the hotel is without doubt one of the best in the city, which is a huge statement to make, especially in Dubai, where the standard of hotels is generally very high. Mr Armani has overseen every single detail of this hotel, from the scents used throughout the hotel, to the embossed chocolates sold in the deli on the ground floor. The result is astonishing. What separates the hotel from the rest is firstly, its location, right inside the Burj Khalifa, and second, the sense of space of the hotel. Slick, sophisticated and contemporary, the hotel is a veritable success. The only downfall is that you could be anywhere in the world as there is no reminder of the destination's culture and traditions. The hotel is best-suited to couples and friends looking for the crème de la crème in luxury.

The Burj Al Arab appears on the horizon, rises out of the fog along the coastline in Jumeirah, visible from skyscraper terraces all over the city, like a myth seen in books. A real gem in its architecture, seeing the legendary hotel, the only seven star hotel in the world, is like seeing the Taj Mahal in India. It is a real architectural feat that should not be dismissed for being too showy, too brash, too contemporary, but rather revered as a symbol of this city that is no less than over the top! The hotel sits quietly glimmering in the sun along a long and wide sandy beach. The interior takes a while to grow on you, but the services and facilities are irreproachable. It's definitely worth a stay at least for a night, or if it is too pricy for your budget then do drop by for tea, but book early.

This is the second Atlantis hotel in the world. Is Atlantis The Palm, the flagship resort on Dubai's first Palm Island, a gem of a hotel or a monster of excess? Actually, it's both of them! It is perhaps the hotel that best represents Dubai, built as it is from scratch between the sea and the desert. A symbol of grandiose delusions, it is nothing less than a 'kingdom of superlatives'. Next to this immense and (in places) kitsch resort with its multitude of ultramodern facilities and restaurants staffed by award-winning chefs, hotel residents and day-trippers alike can enjoy a huge aquatic park. It is like a city within a city, making it ideal for families, but if you are looking for charm and intimacy, you're probably better off elsewhere!
