Despite the Sofitel's bland image, it is one of our favourite hotels in the city due to its all-round good-value and location. A French brand, the company has ensured that no matter where you are, there are French touches in the service and in the facilities, which distinguishes it from the rest. One thing's for sure is that if you like your baguettes, this is the place to stay! Ideally located in the up and coming trendy JBR (Jumeirah Beach Resort) district, the hotel sits just across the street from the beach and a couple minutes' walk from the main outdoor boardwalk of cafés and restaurants. The food is so good at the Sofitel that you probably won't want to leave the hotel anyway! Perfect for a range of clientele from business to groups, families and couples, the Sofitel remains in our top ten for quality.

    Location 8.5 /10

The hotel is in a prime location right across the road from the main Jumeirah beach. 'The Walk' is a few minutes' walk away; here you'll find about 200 shops, bars and restaurants (most of which are chains). The main hub of activity in the area is here and in April the Red Bull Motocross competition is set up just opposite the hotel. However, it is a far away from the airport - it can take about 30 minutes by car on average (traffic-depending). The main Bur Dubai hub - where you'll find the Dubai Mall and the Burj Khalifa - is about 20 minutes away.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The rooms are extremely comfortable, and like at all Sofitel hotels, they have the exclusive My Bed king size affairs, which we can tell you, guarantee an excellent night's sleep. However, the decor does leave a lot to be desired. The dated oriental colours and materials used will not be to the taste of guests looking for something slick and contemporary. There are 398 rooms and 40 suites, most of which have balconies looking out to the sea - on clear days the sea glows turquoise as if at an exotic Caribbean location. A balcony is also a good idea for smokers although it is still possible to smoke on designated floors. Wi-Fi is included in the room rate for all categories, and the smallest room starts at 35m² to 65m² for a top category room. The sizes here are on the small side for Dubai, but at such a prime location, it is hard to find bigger. All rooms have the usual mod-cons such as an in-room safe (free to use), mini-bar, large flat-screen television, bathrobes and slippers. The bathrooms are spacious and extremely practically designed. They are stocked with l'Occitane products and Hermes products in the suites. All rooms have full or part sea views, which is a great plus if you'e in Dubai for some down-time.

    Overview 8.70 /10

The lobby is large and like most hotels in Dubai, has a bit of a shopping centre atmosphere; however particular attention has been paid to the décor, which consists of a romantic artistic installation of trees and a starry sky. Tasteful and different to what we have seen at other hotels, the decor represents the Sofitel's image: a quality establishment without being over the top. With 31 floors in total, the hotel boasts great views of the ocean - the pool deck is the highlight of the hotel without a doubt (despite the sound of the passing traffic below) with its lovely infinity-edged pool. The hotel opened fully in 2010 and since, has hosted various events with the Académie Française in Dubai and in collaboration with the world famous Paris-based Polka Photography Gallery - the exhibitions held at the gallery circulate around the world at Sofitel hotels. While we were visiting, there was a stunning exhibition on, in the hotel's restaurant - the infinity pool aside, this is the true gem in the crown for art buffs. Even you are not a guest at the hotel, it is worth finding out about upcoming events here. Otherwise in terms of facilities, the Sofitel is a brand you can trust for quality. All facilities, be it the restaurant, the gym or the spa are ergonomic and provide guests with pleasant experiences.

    Food and drink 9.70 /10

The main restaurant, 'Rocco', with its purple walls and fussy lighting isn't quiet to everyone's taste, but reflects the destination very well - in fact the Sofitel restaurant is highly appreciated among the Emirati and Arab population. Here, the chef serves Italian food of a high standard. The Brasserie restaurant, like at all Sofitel hotels, specialises in French food, and it does it extremely well. The meat cuts like butter, the bread takes you to France in just a single bite and the staff is polite and relaxed. Both restaurants are extremely popular with the local expat population as well as in-house guests. The all-day restaurant is the most contemporary of the three - here a fancy spread is laid out in buffet style for all three meals. The buffet here is the less expensive 'everyday' option, but that is not to say that it is inferior in quality! When you see the layout, you'll know what we mean!

Otherwise the hotel has three bars including the 'Infini' pool bar. The Plantation bar, decorated in a colonial style also serves snacks and is open 24 hours. The Hub is more of a cosy option for sipping on a whisky-ice before dinner and it also serves snacks (closes at 1:00am).

    Beach 7.70 /10

Although there is nothing exotic about Dubai beaches due to the lack of coves and vegetation, it does the job on those sweltering summer days. Dubai beach life unravels along this long stretch of sand lined by towers of hotels. The beach is on the whole quite clean and there are a number of cafés and restaurants that line the beach along the Jumeirah beach walk. The area is generally safe, even at night. Drinking alcohol in open public spaces is however not permitted; you run a high risk of a hefty fine or even jail if you choose to break this law.

Fairly well-located, in Deira, close to the Creek, the Sheraton Deira sits on its own on Al Mateena Road; one of the rare streets lined with palm trees, pavements, shops and local restaurants. Although not busy, there is a very local feel around the area, which gives the hotel an extra calm atmosphere. A smallish four star property, the Sheraton Deira is ideal for visitors looking to stay at a hotel within a chain they recognise. The rooms are comfortable but there isn't much else is terms of entertainment or restaurants. Not ideal for a family, not a luxury hotel, so best-suited to short-term visitors with an average budget looking for a no-frills, no fuss hotel.

Granted the status of 'Preferred hotels and resorts', this hotel, with its quirky vertical and horizontal layout, is made up of the old and the new making it a rather conspicuous building. The plethora of services and facilities, as well as the beach, are greatly appreciated, but the flashy and kitsch nature of the place quickly becomes irritating. Located in the new marina district, the Habtoor Grand Resort and Spa is particularly ideal for families.

British by name, but Irish-owned, the first thing that springs to mind is the Bonnington's impressive display of wall o wall, floor to ceiling, book-match marble! Heavy and cold, the lines and materials, are too masculine to be defined as quintessentially British. The hotel's name is as British as it gets as the decor in public areas have a more contemporary Middle-Eastern feel, whereas the rooms look like a cross between the latter and Swedish design.

The Address Dubai Marina, not to be confused with the other Address hotels in Dubai, is located halfway between the city centre, Bur Dubai, and the up and coming 'JBR' (Jumeirah Beach Resort) area, which is handy if you are going to be zooming between the two during your stay. True to The Address style, this hotel has beautiful interiors, comfortable rooms and good service, however, it lacks atmosphere due to its shopping centre aspect. The breakfast here is one of the highlights, as is the beautiful freeform roof-top pool, which is one of the largest in the city. The hotel is ideal for a range of guests, from groups of friends to families and couples.

The Movenpick Jumeirah Beach Hotel is the perfect all-rounder if you're going to be spending a holiday in Dubai. Situated in the up and coming Jumeirah Beach area, it is in a prime location right across the street from the main beach. A five star hotel with excellent standards and a good general holiday atmosphere, it is a great place to choose whether in a group of friends, as a family or as a couple. However, compared to other hotels in the city, the hotel lacks a stronger luxury aspect to be a five star, which is why it has been awarded four stars by our reviewing journalist, The highlight of the hotel is its wonderful pool deck, which overlooks the sea.

The lifestyle Armani Hotel Dubai is nothing short of stunning. With every angle and curve that has been carefully studied to give the desired effect, the hotel is without doubt one of the best in the city, which is a huge statement to make, especially in Dubai, where the standard of hotels is generally very high. Mr Armani has overseen every single detail of this hotel, from the scents used throughout the hotel, to the embossed chocolates sold in the deli on the ground floor. The result is astonishing. What separates the hotel from the rest is firstly, its location, right inside the Burj Khalifa, and second, the sense of space of the hotel. Slick, sophisticated and contemporary, the hotel is a veritable success. The only downfall is that you could be anywhere in the world as there is no reminder of the destination's culture and traditions. The hotel is best-suited to couples and friends looking for the crème de la crème in luxury.

The Burj Al Arab appears on the horizon, rises out of the fog along the coastline in Jumeirah, visible from skyscraper terraces all over the city, like a myth seen in books. A real gem in its architecture, seeing the legendary hotel, the only seven star hotel in the world, is like seeing the Taj Mahal in India. It is a real architectural feat that should not be dismissed for being too showy, too brash, too contemporary, but rather revered as a symbol of this city that is no less than over the top! The hotel sits quietly glimmering in the sun along a long and wide sandy beach. The interior takes a while to grow on you, but the services and facilities are irreproachable. It's definitely worth a stay at least for a night, or if it is too pricy for your budget then do drop by for tea, but book early.

This is the second Atlantis hotel in the world. Is Atlantis The Palm, the flagship resort on Dubai's first Palm Island, a gem of a hotel or a monster of excess? Actually, it's both of them! It is perhaps the hotel that best represents Dubai, built as it is from scratch between the sea and the desert. A symbol of grandiose delusions, it is nothing less than a 'kingdom of superlatives'. Next to this immense and (in places) kitsch resort with its multitude of ultramodern facilities and restaurants staffed by award-winning chefs, hotel residents and day-trippers alike can enjoy a huge aquatic park. It is like a city within a city, making it ideal for families, but if you are looking for charm and intimacy, you're probably better off elsewhere!
