Villa Rotana is one of the myriad Rotanas in the city. This one is located right on Sheikh Zayed road in the new town centre of Dubai. The hotel itself is quiet with very little atmosphere, however, the rooms are well appointed and modern. Rooms are fitted either with a fully-equipped kitchen or kitchenette, meaning that guests wanting to be independent when it comes to eating and drinking, can be. The hotel is a good place to stay for a couple of nights - it is clean, comfortable and pleasant in terms of decor. Although we found the hotel to be of a good standard, nothing really jumped out at us. The hotel is technically a four star, but we have downgraded it to a three star due to the lack of facilities on offer.

    Location 8.0 /10

The hotel is located right on Dubai's main road, Sheikh Zayed Road, in the new town centre a short drive away from the Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa complex.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

There are 117 rooms divided up into three categories: classic studio, premium suite, and classic suite. All the rooms are more or less the same when it comes to decor, but the studios are smaller at 36m² - they are also fitted with a kitchenette as opposed to a full kitchen. The suite dimensions are 67m². All rooms have flat-screen televisions, but the suites benefit from a 42 inch television as opposed to the smaller 20 inch screens in the studios. The rooms may on the small side as far as hotel room sizes go in Dubai, but they are very well appointed, fresh and contemporary. All have complimentary tea and coffee making facilities. Although there is Wi-Fi access throughout the hotel, it comes at an extra charge. The rooms are extremely comfortable with crisp white sheets and touches of modern design, including a bright red swivel chair, which lifts the otherwise neutral colour scheme. We liked the furniture's glass/wood combination, which is in-keeping with the more contemporary hotels of the chain, which can be a little old-fashioned, like Arjaan Rotana and the Rayhaan Rose. Some of the rooms have a brick wall, which adds an industrial look that gives the rooms even more of a modern edge. Artwork hanging on the walls helps add a little warmth to the otherwise impersonal atmosphere. Guests can choose between rooms with an exterior view or interior view of the indoor courtyard. If you choose a courtyard room, be aware that it can be a little noisy when there is a group of guests sitting in the café downstairs. These rooms can also be a little dark compared to the exterior rooms; also, your neighbours are able to see in from corridors and from their room from some angles. The bathrooms all have bath tubs and are stocked with own-brand Rotana toiletries. The bathrooms are just as well-appointed as the rooms, meaning that even if they are small, they are compact.

    Overview 6.70 /10

From the exterior, the large glass cube can be seen from the road and is difficult to miss. Inside, the decor is loosely based around a neutral Italian Renaissance theme, as you will be able to tell from the mouldings along the ceilings and walls. The entire colour scheme in shared areas is white with bottle-green tinted glass. The effect is memorable but too bland to be at the top of our list. There isn't much to the hotel in fact; the lobby bar/café/restaurant is behind the elevator shafts and is usually extremely quiet. This area is arranged in an atrium structure around a closed courtyard. The lobby actually reminded us of a brand new flashy dental clinic! Otherwise there is a Bodylines gym. The gym is extremely well-equipped for a hotel of this size and frequentation - ideal for any gym-fiends out there! The best part of the hotel, apart from its gleaming white lobby, is the roof-top pool. It's only a rectangle of water on a roof, but after a long day's sight-seeing, it sure does the trick! It can a be a bit noisy up there - like most hotels in Dubai, it is situated on a main road meaning that the road noise travels and can be disturbed.

    Food and drink 5.70 /10

The atrium behind the elevator shaft is where you will find the Moka Café, open 24 hours. Even if it is really quiet and there is no one in sight, just have a seat and someone will magically appear to take your order! The area itself is nothing to write home about - it feels closed in due to the atrium structure, but it is practical to have somewhere to have a quick bite to eat at any time of the day. The area lacks atmosphere and is usually quite quiet, so if you're looking for somewhere to stay where you won't be disturbed, then this is the place!

Once you step into the urban chic Fairmont, is when you really step into the decadence one expects in Dubai! There are futuristic design features in all corners of the hotel's public spaces, from funky lighting to unusually-shaped furniture to keep you entertained. The Fairmont is a large hotel so it doesn't feel very intimate; however, there is plenty do without even having to step outside! The highlight of the hotel is its ten exquisite food outlets (see our Food and Drink section below) which are renowned throughout the city and are well worth the detour if you do not end up staying here - we highly recommend stopping by at Cascades for lunch, and Kitsune, the absolutely enchanting Japanese, for dinner. The food quality and range, as well as the service is fantastic as is the huge 40,000ft² Willow Stream spa. The interior architecture of the hotel can best be appreciated in the Cascades all day restaurant tucked away just behind the large spacious lobby, as glass elevators travel up and down the hotel's 34 floors. Perfect for a long weekend, for families, couples and friends alike, the Fairmont is extremely versatile and has something for everyone looking to be surprised and wooed by well thought-out futuristic design.

As impressive from the outside as it is on the inside, the Shangri-La occupies a towering sky-scraper and is primarily an establishment for people on business trips. The plethora of services on offer, the Chinese cuisine, the common areas, including the magnificent swimming-pool, the impeccable service and the care taken for the smallest of details, make for a very enjoyable place to stay, ideally located at a short distance from the sea.

Four Points hotels are a good-value four star brand managed by Sheraton. There are three in the city so be sure to have the exact name and address of the hotel before embarking in a taxi to avoid being dropped off at the wrong hotel. The three hotels are very different to one another so it is worth reading up to see which one would suit you best before booking. Being located right on Dubai's main road, Sheikh Zayed, the Four Points Sheikh Zayed Road is right in the middle of the action and has stunning views from its roof top pool; on a clear day it is possible to see landmark hotels such as the Atlantis and the Burj al Arab. Otherwise, in terms of comfort, it is a good bet that is suited to a range of clientele from business visitors to couples or groups of friends. Although the hotel welcomes families, there isn't much in terms of children's facilities.

We found Al Murooj to be closer to a resort than a hotel due to its size and facilities, so it's a great choice for those of you looking for a lively holiday. The rooms are spacious, there is a good range of facilities and a dynamic atmosphere. There is also a good choice of restaurants for those foodies out there - the Indian restaurant, Zaika, is particularly good and serves some . Although the hotel has a large business clientele which is reflected in the style of the rooms, the hotel does welcome a solid base of leisure guests looking for a varied facilities such as restaurants serving good food.

The recently opened Rotana Rayaan Rose, now stands as the tallest hotel in the world at 333m high on the emblematic Sheikh Zayed Road. The newest addition to the Rotana chain catalogue, the Rose welcomes all types of visitors and has been especially popular with a local Emirati clientele. It is not a luxurious hotel, although it has all the expected mod-cons guests may want; it is also very well located. Not ideal for guests wanting to get some peace and quiet but an ideal base to be in the centre of the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Towers Rotana may look in keeping with the Rotana brand from the exterior and lobby but has more of a design penchant in its restaurants as does the Media Rotana in Prego. Recently renovated, the rooms are still awaiting a refurbishment, but the food and beverage outlets look good. The Towers is ideal for young visitors, groups of friends and families alike. It is not a luxury hotel and it is not romantic either, but if you are the type of holidaymaker who likes to be in the thick of the hustle and bustle, then it is a good lively base to explore the city from.

This is the second Atlantis hotel in the world. Is Atlantis The Palm, the flagship resort on Dubai's first Palm Island, a gem of a hotel or a monster of excess? Actually, it's both of them! It is perhaps the hotel that best represents Dubai, built as it is from scratch between the sea and the desert. A symbol of grandiose delusions, it is nothing less than a 'kingdom of superlatives'. Next to this immense and (in places) kitsch resort with its multitude of ultramodern facilities and restaurants staffed by award-winning chefs, hotel residents and day-trippers alike can enjoy a huge aquatic park. It is like a city within a city, making it ideal for families, but if you are looking for charm and intimacy, you're probably better off elsewhere!

The lifestyle Armani Hotel Dubai is nothing short of stunning. With every angle and curve that has been carefully studied to give the desired effect, the hotel is without doubt one of the best in the city, which is a huge statement to make, especially in Dubai, where the standard of hotels is generally very high. Mr Armani has overseen every single detail of this hotel, from the scents used throughout the hotel, to the embossed chocolates sold in the deli on the ground floor. The result is astonishing. What separates the hotel from the rest is firstly, its location, right inside the Burj Khalifa, and second, the sense of space of the hotel. Slick, sophisticated and contemporary, the hotel is a veritable success. The only downfall is that you could be anywhere in the world as there is no reminder of the destination's culture and traditions. The hotel is best-suited to couples and friends looking for the crème de la crème in luxury.

The Burj Al Arab appears on the horizon, rises out of the fog along the coastline in Jumeirah, visible from skyscraper terraces all over the city, like a myth seen in books. A real gem in its architecture, seeing the legendary hotel, the only seven star hotel in the world, is like seeing the Taj Mahal in India. It is a real architectural feat that should not be dismissed for being too showy, too brash, too contemporary, but rather revered as a symbol of this city that is no less than over the top! The hotel sits quietly glimmering in the sun along a long and wide sandy beach. The interior takes a while to grow on you, but the services and facilities are irreproachable. It's definitely worth a stay at least for a night, or if it is too pricy for your budget then do drop by for tea, but book early.
