A quiet, discreet little place at the heart of the old town, the Daphne guarantees a relaxing stay in one of the most charming parts of the city.
In terms of design, the decor here is rather old-fashioned and never too busy. The hotel climbs up towards the Blue Mosque, its entrance met with cobbled streets that look truly magical when lit up at night.
It's a good choice for those travelling as a couple.

    • To know

    • The hotel stands at the heart of the Sultanahmet district, on one of the streets leading up to the Blue Mosque and not too far from the Arena hotel. The Daphne is around 30 minutes from the international airport by car.
Given its position within the city, if you're taking a taxi, your best bet is to ask the taxi driver whether he knows the hotel; otherwise, ask him to drop you off near the old walls and you'll have just a 5 minute walk to reach the hotel (all of the local shopkeepers will know where to direct you).

    • The 20 guest rooms at the Daphne consist of Family and Deluxe rooms, all featuring rather old-fashioned decor.
Although only 8 of them have a sea view, the others still overlook the rooftops of Sultanahmet.
The basic rooms are done out in shades of blue and purple and have a sea view.
All of them have air-conditioning, a minibar, a plasma-screen television, and free Wi-Fi.
The Deluxe rooms, meanwhile, are charged between £58 in low-season and £88 in high-season (as of mid-March) for a single, and £70 to £97 for a double.
    • The Daphne hotel is a modest establishment but one that nevertheless offers a comprehensive service, a clean façade, and warm surroundings.
The no-frills decor and efficient service, as witnessed on arrival in the private lobby area, give the place an almost homely feel, which is perhaps where the hotel, which opened only five years ago, gets its feeling of intimacy from.
The hotel is comprised of 4 storeys and has a relatively small number of guest rooms (20). The restaurant is located on the terrace, which offers amazing views across the rooftops of Sultanahmet and the Bosphorus in the background.
    • The hotel's only restaurant, can accommodate up to 30 diners at a time and provides an intimate setting. The menu consists of a variety of traditional dishes, the main advantage of which is the price (maximum of around £11 per dish), but the food is generally tasty.
We particularly recommend the lamb and the mixed grill, though there is also fish, of course, and other less traditional dishes such as kebabs.
Open for lunch and dinner, the restaurant is bright and nicely furnished.
Breakfast is also served here but is of a more international variety.
    • The Daphne hotel is a fascinating, solid-looking place. Having opened in 2005, it can sometimes seem older than it actually is, though you're sure to receive a warm welcome that'll put you right at ease here.
In front of the hotel you'll find some ruins where archaeological digs have taken place. The manager will be happy to fill you in on their history, as well as that of the former racecourse just down the road.

The Arena hotel is nestled in the little streets leading up to the old town, behind the Blue Mosque, and is a real flashback to the atmosphere of Istanbul's past.
It is a timeless hotel with an inescapably intimate feel thanks to its past as a private residence. The ambience is relaxed and the staff welcoming. Many of the visitors here are foreign, and guests can often be seen with their noses in books.
This is a boutique hotel that has stayed true to its word when it comes to delivering luxury, while also adding a family feel and a hint of preserved traditions.
What is more, the only noise to be heard (although it is quite some noise at that!) is the muezzin's call to prayer from the Blue Mosque that stands at the top of the hill.

The Golden Horn Sultanahmet is stylish but suffers from too much decor. Nevertheless, it does offer the considerable advantages of a very favourable location, fine panoramic views from its rooftop terrace, and a few ground floor guest rooms suitable for guests with reduced mobility.
The standard rooms are fine for couples but if you are bringing your children you might find them a bit cramped. In this case, you'll be best off opting for rooms in the superior category, which are more spacious and more appropriately designed to the occasion.

As its name indicates, the Sumahan on the Water is a little world on the water. Inside, it displays a balance of lines and shapes that create a modern style and is never cold. This is a bit of a surprise given the exterior aspect of the building, which management wanted to keep as nondescript as possible.
This effort to go unnoticed speaks of the attention afforded to the guests, in terms of welcome, service, and cuisine. The Sumahan blends luxury and attention to detail together with know-how, efficiency, good taste, and quality.
It also commands one of the finest views of the Bosphorus there is. It really is in a league of its own.
