The Golden Horn Sultanahmet is stylish but suffers from too much decor. Nevertheless, it does offer the considerable advantages of a very favourable location, fine panoramic views from its rooftop terrace, and a few ground floor guest rooms suitable for guests with reduced mobility.
The standard rooms are fine for couples but if you are bringing your children you might find them a bit cramped. In this case, you'll be best off opting for rooms in the superior category, which are more spacious and more appropriately designed to the occasion.

    Location 9.44 /10

The Golden Horn is in the Sultanahmet district, the historical centre of Istanbul. It takes about 20 minutes to get there by car from the Atatürk international airport but bear in mind that traffic jams are a possibility.

    Accommodation 6.20 /10

The double rooms and master rooms both struck us as inexplicably small. The beds are slotted into a long, narrow space, which leaves some room to move around in, but hardly offers the most generous of dimensions.
The furniture is kept to a minimum, with a bed (sometimes more than one several), a bedside table, a table, and a gilded mirror. These items match the light shades of ochre, cream and beige of the walls and the outdated style of the rooms. Greater attention to detail can be seen in the rooms in the superior category, which have more modern furniture and are laid out in a more logical manner, partly thanks to their larger size.
In any case, all of the rooms have the advantage of having plenty of light. The facilities at the Golden Horn include a flat-screen television attached to the wall, a minibar, adjustable air-conditioning, and a good range of hospitality products.

    Overview 6.70 /10

The hotel is imposing without going over the top. In the centre of Istanbul, and more precisely in the neighbourhood of Sultanahmet, it occupies an old 4 storey building with a rooftop terrace offering fine views.
The entrance is stylish despite its small size, and gives a good idea of the style of the rest of the hotel: the wooden furniture mimics the retro look of the lamps, and the walls feature stucco and gilding. Finally, an imposing spiral staircase made of marble rises up to the floors with the guest rooms.
Overall, the spaces on the ground floor are well lit but there is a coolness to the rather over-elaborate decor.
Apart from guests on holiday, the Golden Horn regularly hosts conferences and work meetings. For such purposes, the hotel provides the necessary facilities, such as meeting rooms, a cocktail area, and a multi-purpose room in the basement.
One floor down, you will find the well-being centre. It is a clean space with a gym, a Turkish bath, a sauna, and a swimming pool. It could do with a bit of an upgrade to expand the spaces and improve the way the treatments are organised.

    Food and drink 6.45 /10

The restaurant is in a carpeted room with stucco-covered walls. It has a rather oppressive atmosphere and the windows are not enough to let in a sufficient amount of light.
The indoor dining room can seat a good number of diners and there is also an outdoor terrace that is furnished for lunch and dinner during the summer. Given the location in the heart of Sultanahmet, the panoramic view from here is a great selling point for the hotel, as it takes in the Blue Mosque and the other main sights of the city.
The menu alternates between Turkish specialities and more international dishes, including loads of vegetables.

    To know

From the outside, the building does not look particularly special. A thorough renovation would definitely improve the first visual impression you get of the place, since what currently grabs your attention is the unfinished look of the façade.
However, once you enter the hotel, this impression soon becomes a distant memory.

The Maisons de Sainte-Sophie are definitely one of the best places to stay in Sultanahmet, a few steps away from the Topkapi Palace. This set of Ottoman residences, with its multicoloured wooden walls, is reminiscent of a charming village of doll houses. The interiors are refined and tastefully decorated. A great place if charm is more important to you than comfort.

The Arena hotel is nestled in the little streets leading up to the old town, behind the Blue Mosque, and is a real flashback to the atmosphere of Istanbul's past.
It is a timeless hotel with an inescapably intimate feel thanks to its past as a private residence. The ambience is relaxed and the staff welcoming. Many of the visitors here are foreign, and guests can often be seen with their noses in books.
This is a boutique hotel that has stayed true to its word when it comes to delivering luxury, while also adding a family feel and a hint of preserved traditions.
What is more, the only noise to be heard (although it is quite some noise at that!) is the muezzin's call to prayer from the Blue Mosque that stands at the top of the hill.

A quiet, discreet little place at the heart of the old town, the Daphne guarantees a relaxing stay in one of the most charming parts of the city.
In terms of design, the decor here is rather old-fashioned and never too busy. The hotel climbs up towards the Blue Mosque, its entrance met with cobbled streets that look truly magical when lit up at night.
It's a good choice for those travelling as a couple.

As its name indicates, the Sumahan on the Water is a little world on the water. Inside, it displays a balance of lines and shapes that create a modern style and is never cold. This is a bit of a surprise given the exterior aspect of the building, which management wanted to keep as nondescript as possible.
This effort to go unnoticed speaks of the attention afforded to the guests, in terms of welcome, service, and cuisine. The Sumahan blends luxury and attention to detail together with know-how, efficiency, good taste, and quality.
It also commands one of the finest views of the Bosphorus there is. It really is in a league of its own.
