This hotel may not be the best Istanbul has to offer in terms of luxury but it certainly has character!
This Turkish-owned establishment is located in a vibrant part of the city and can be a little overly kitsch in places, meaning that a good makeover of the currently rather outdated style would increase its appeal.
Having said that, it does offer a very special and rather lively atmosphere (you'll often find lots of families here) and simply oozes character.
If you have nothing better in mind, you should give it a try.

    Location 5.0 /10

The hotel is located in the Findikzade district, not far from Cerrahpasa University in the west of the city (beyond Galata Bridge), and just around a 10 minute drive from the main airport.
The closest metro station is Aksaray, although alternatively the tram also runs as far as the Findikzade station.

    Accommodation 6.95 /10

The rooms here are fairly big, well-appointed, and clean.
The light, bright decor is brightened up with a few reproduction Van Gogh paintings, which you'll also find in the corridors linking the rooms on the upper floors. The hotel offers a good level of comfort throughout, including air-conditioning, televisions, safe deposit boxes, and minibar refrigerators.
The beds are not as new as they could be, which may put you off if you have a sensitive back. On the other hand, the rooms are nice and bright and the windows don't look too close onto the neighbouring buildings, so the views aren't too bad either.
Given that the hotel attracts a large number of families, an additional bed can be provided in your room if you are travelling with young children.

    Overview 6.45 /10

The lobby in this small, friendly hotel has a truly welcoming feel to it and, given the large number of Turkish families who stay here, the establishment as a whole is a rather modest little place. However, the service is adapted to this type of clientele perfectly.
The owner is Turkish and there aren't any international aspirations around here and some serious renovating could do wonders.
Having opened in 1997 and never been fully renovated since, this is a basic and pretty old hotel where the decor features a colour scheme of dark shades. The atmosphere here is reminiscent of the 1950s and is probably best described as kitsch. This is certainly true of the 'Indian'-style artwork in the restaurant and the fountain in the centre of the lobby. The entrance also holds a series of columns that divide the area into different sections and features embedded lights in the ceiling, not to mention the many rugs adorning the floor in the reception area.
There is a souvenir shop open every day for all those little necessities you might need.

    Food and drink 6.45 /10

There are, in fact, two restaurants at the Grand Anka. These are decorated in the same style as the rest of the hotel and both offer a choice of dishes with the emphasis on local cuisine.
The spacious main restaurant is rather basic but kitsch, complete with pictures resembling the dream-like paintings often found in Indian restaurants.
The ground floor is also where you'll find the Anka Bar, complete with a rather dubious red and green Scottish rug. A mirror positioned behind the bar to the rear reflects the entire room, which, of course, helps enhance the feeling of space.

    To know

The hotel belongs to the same (Turkish) owner as the nearby Green Anka,.
It benefits from a pleasant location on a quiet little street at the heart of an area busy with shoppers by day but rather quiet by night, and is better maintained than the neighbouring hotel.
The restaurants here primarily serve local specialities, but there's really nothing international about this place anyway.

This establishment really is too outdated to be able to appreciate its positive aspects, such as its restaurant terrace and its location in the very heart of the shopping district of Laleli.
It is a small and rather unimpressive hotel offering a pretty average level of service.
If you particularly want to stay in this area, we'd recommend you try the Grand Emin instead, which happens to be run by the same people.

As its name indicates, the Sumahan on the Water is a little world on the water. Inside, it displays a balance of lines and shapes that create a modern style and is never cold. This is a bit of a surprise given the exterior aspect of the building, which management wanted to keep as nondescript as possible.
This effort to go unnoticed speaks of the attention afforded to the guests, in terms of welcome, service, and cuisine. The Sumahan blends luxury and attention to detail together with know-how, efficiency, good taste, and quality.
It also commands one of the finest views of the Bosphorus there is. It really is in a league of its own.
