Described by the British media as the capital's most romantic hotel, the Gore is also believed to be the most photographed. Light years away from the anonymous hotel chains commonly found in large cities, this establishment provides intimate surroundings not unlike those you would expect to find at a guesthouse. Located between the exclusive districts of Knightsbridge and Kensington, the facilities offered by the Gore are every bit worthy of its 5 star rating, making it ideal for special (and even not so special) occasions! It is particularly recommended for couples without children, as there are no facilities to cater for younger guests.

    Location 6.27 /10

The Gore hotel stands on Kensington Road, just a few minutes from the High Street Kensington, Gloucester Road, and South Kensington tube stations, in the elegant borough of the same name. Hyde Park is also just a stone's throw away and the main shopping street is just a little further along, with tourists and locals alike flocking to its shops, traditional English pubs, restaurants, and fast food outlets. From here it only takes around 20 minutes to reach the centre of London and the main tourist attractions, as the borough is served by 2 tube lines: the Circle Line and the District Line.

    Accommodation 8.00 /10

If you have a passion for old buildings, you're going to absolutely love this place. The hotel's 50 guest rooms have managed to preserve their old fashioned decor, even down to the 'throne-like' toilets in some cases. Most of the hotel is rather like visiting a museum, the rooms that haven't already been rented out to guests that is! The rooms here come in 7 different categories: Single, Twin, Double, Wonderful, Wonderful Luxury, Deluxe, and the breathtaking Signature room. Although they may have all adopted a bygone style, they certainly come with all the modern luxuries too, including a minibar, a safe, free Wifi, individual air conditioning, a DVD player, a plasma screen television, a cordless phone, bathrobes, a hair dryer, and even an iPod docking station in the Deluxe rooms.

    Overview 7.25 /10

The reception is located at one of the 2 former entrances to the building, with a small counter serving as a reception desk. A door to the left leads through to the bar, whilst the restaurant is located to the opposite side. The management decided not to have any other facilities (such as a gym or business centre) installed at the hotel so as not to spoil the historic aspect of the building, making it a great option for those who want to focus on the ambience of the hotel or the attractions the local area has to offer!

    Food and drink 7.60 /10

Since 1968, when the Rolling Stones video "Beggars Banquet" was shot in the hotel bar, it has been part of the very exclusive circle of 'places to be' in London. With its low key ambience, old parquet flooring, and olde worlde leather armchair, it's easy to see why! Snacks and tapas are also served at the bar, but if you're looking for something more substantial, head for the hotel's small 55-seater restaurant, where a selection of international and Arabian dishes and set menus starting from £21.50 for 2 courses are served in elegant, sophisticated surroundings. Afternoon tea is also served every day from 2:00pm to 3:30pm, starting at £22.50 per person.

    To know

The hotel is housed in 2 old 19th century Victorian houses that used to belong to 2 sisters. While much of the property has been repainted over the years, no major renovations have been carried out yet, so keep an eye on this place...

If you are an enthusiast of contemporary hotels, this one certainly isn't for you! As this used to be the Queen Mum's residence, it is of course listed as a historical monument, which means that nothing in the building can be altered... This didn't stop the hotel, however, from installing all the modern amenities. It is very much like a little museum, as it used to be the Earl of Strathmore's dwelling place, hence the name. Indeed, there aren't any leisure-dedicated facilities within the hotel, but this only serves to educate and allow you to discover the town better! We recommend it to couples with no children.

As its name suggests, the Baglioni provides its guests with very Italian-inspired surroundings, despite its location at the heart of a truly British environment (including the weather!) at the centre of the upmarket borough of Kensington. Having said that, the welcome you'll receive from the staff and the decorative detail of the lobby alone are enough to take your mind off what the weather happens to be doing. The management team has put a great deal of thought into the decor of this place, from the communal areas to the guest rooms, making it an original 5 star establishment and a far cry from the traditional British hotel.

Don't let the appearance of this classical 19th century building fool you - although the inside is as elegant as its exterior facade, you're likely to find a few nice surprises in store. This may be due to the fact that this is no ordinary hotel! Instead, it is a 'large luxurious house', as the management likes to call it, located at the very heart of the elegant Kensington district and just a stone's throw from the park of the same name. With its 38 rooms, the Cranley looks more like a large family residence than a hotel. There is neither a restaurant nor breakfast room; everything is served in your room or (in the case of tea or champagne) in the small reception-lounge area decorated in a completely traditional 100% English manner. It is primarily a recommended destination for couples, as the hotel does not offer much in the way of entertainment.

This little boutique hotel in an old Georgian house is nothing like the legendary palaces or traditional houses of England. It offers its guests a number of advantages, including its location at the heart of a very hip neighbourhood, an intimate atmosphere and personalised service. However, there is a slight drawback: while the decor in the common areas is worthy of a boutique hotel, the same cannot be said of the guest rooms.

In very much the same way as the opening of The Savoy caused tongues to wag furiously back in 1889 with its electricity, new fangled lifts and en suite bathrooms, the reopening after three years of renovation on 10th October 2010 was the biggest talking point in the British, if not world, hotel industry. Brought back to its full Art Deco and Edwardian glory, The Savoy is now bigger and better than ever. The jewel in the crown of London's hotels now has several new features and much of what came before has had a full face lift. Immaculate rooms, exquisite dining and the finest of décor make of The Savoy the only place to stay in this town. It proves that class is timeless.

The beautiful gothic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, now almost 140 years old, is located right next to King's Cross St Pancras, which might not be in the most glamorous of neighbourhoods, but the hotel's 1800 period charm is unbeatable. The enormous hotel raised to the grey London skies with its stern-looking clock tower and turrets, looks extremely daunting, but once inside, the atmosphere is cosy and warm. A great place to stay for business people needing to be close to the station, but also a fun and unusual experience for leisure guests. The only hotel in the country to be built right on the railway, the St Pancras Renaissance is one of a kind; if you do not decide to stay here, try dropping in for a coffee or lunch at The Booking Office or Gilbert Scott.

The exclusive St. James's Hotel and Club is appropriately tucked away discreetly at the end of a cul-de-sac behind The Ritz on Piccadilly. While perhaps not quite of the same standing as its West End neighbour, the property is nonetheless a class act and has a history and following to rival that of any London hotel. The guestrooms are decorated and appointed to the highest standards and feature every amenity expected of a place like St. James's. As well as Michelin star dining and a service of the utmost attention to detail, the hotel still operates as a club to the rich and famous so you never know who you will be rubbing shoulders with when you stay here. More of a couples' or individual hotel, the St. James's is the place to come for intimacy, discretion and privacy.

This former town hall in East London represents one of the most remarkable transformations of any building in the capital. While most of the edifice's original architectural features have been guarded, this has not been seen as an obstacle to introducing a highly contemporary design into the hugely spacious rooms, world-class restaurant and divine pool and gym. Add to this a unique art project, great service and a vibrant history and you get one of the most unconventional hotels in London. Recommended for all types of traveller, especially those who are tired of staying in the town centre and are looking for an alternative location.
